Oh, I agree, but you seemed to be criticising the price of tickets and the size of donations....and in this respect MTG was par for the course.

No, I was commenting on the fact that _everything_ they do on that side comes with a price tag.

And the Dems are not much different in that regard. Standard political fund raising techniques.

newyorkguy 23rd June 2021 12:28 PM

Greene's appearance at the Wilson County trump day dinner is routine? People paying $1,000 to attend an hour long private reception with a freshman member of Congress? The whole point seems to be, it is NOT routine. In Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's first three months in Congress in 2019 she fund-raised $728,000. Greene raised over four times that amount.

Political sources usually estimate during their two-year term members of Congress need to raise about $2 million for their reelection. Greene's on track to raise about twelve times that much.

Like we used to say in the 1990s, 'Do the math.' ;)

How many appreaces did MTG make opposed to AOC?
I know the priced quoted for MTG's most recent appreance are par for the course for a fundraiser in both parties.
Oh, I think MTG is a grifter alright, and a lot of the money she raises will end up in her private pocket, but I can't be outraged by the specific prices quoted.

Business owners & gun owners are the greatest threat to the Democrat’s ultimate goal of socialism.

Because of their mindset.

They are independent, successful & don’t need to rely on the government.

They can’t be convinced they’re a victim.

Therefore they can’t be controlled. Twitter link

Only one? Which Democrat did she have in mind?

Well....she's right about one thing with some gun owners: they can't be controlled because they're nuts and go on shooting sprees killing innocent people.

But she's wrong when she says they can't be convinced they're a victim: work place shootings, school shootings, domestic partner shootings are usually by people who are convinced they're victims of some gross wrong.

I wonder how many "Business owners & gun owners" who don't need to rely on the government availed themselves of the Paycheck Protection Program, the COVID-19 EIDL, the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, the SBA debt relief, and/or unemployment insurance this last year?

To expand on this. Even the "law abiding" gun owner's rationale is protection against the fear of other gun owners (the "non law abiding" lot.) Which is irrational because having a gun makes one more likely to die by gunfire than by not having one.

But then, irrationality is the prime motivator in the conservative mindset and outlook.

I'd say fear is the prime motivator in the conservative mindset and outlook.

When my grandmother committed suicide, guess what she used? Yep, her own gun. And that was after having shot and killed her husband during a domestic quarrel when she'd been drinking. If no gun had been in the house....

My mother's cousin's son shot and killed his estranged wife with his own gun. A friend's cousin killed herself with her own gun. I've yet to know anyone who had to protect themselves from a stranger with a gun.

Oh, it does happen, but it is exceedingly rare. In fact, you are more likely to be shot, or fatally shot if you have a gun, than if you do not

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2759797/

For those who consider the link TL;DR, here are the results and conclusions

1. Individuals who were in possession of a gun were 4.46 times more likely to be shot in an assault than those not in possession.

2. Individuals who were in possession of a gun were 4.23 times more likely to be fatally shot in an assault.

In assaults where the victim had at least some chance to resist

3. Individuals who were in possession of a gun were 5.45 times more likely to be shot.

When we only considered independent variables that most strongly affected our models, smaller but correspondingly significant adjusted odds ratios were noted. In these reduced models

4. Individuals who were in possession of a gun were 2.55 times more likely to be shot in an assault than those not in possession.

5. Individuals who were in possession of a gun were also 3.54 times more likely to be fatally shot in an assault.

In assaults where the victim had at least some chance to resist

6. Individuals who were in possession of a gun were 2.92 times more likely to be shot.

FYI, the vaccines are *authorized* for use by FDA. Look it up. Twitter link

NFL officials understand that, and are concerned about players who are refusing to be vaccinated. Last season the NFL did have a problem with players testing positive. Below is a news story that appeared in Sporting News last October,
Quote:

The NFL is already facing a problem with positive COVID-19 tests just four weeks into the 2020 season. Week 4 saw two games postponed as a result of players testing positive for the coronavirus. The Steelers and Titans game was removed from the week entirely after several players/staff on Tennessee tested positive for COVID-19. Later, the Patriots and Chiefs game was postponed following positive tests on both teams. Sporting News link

A lot of people who buy guns 'for personal protection' just assume that they will be ready and willing to use it when the crunch is on, but actually shooting another human being doesn't come as easily in real life as it does on TV. That's why it takes all that training by the army to turn high school grads into killers.

OTOH, the people who attack them with a gun or take theirs away from them are likely not as squeamish or hesitant. It isn't about just having a gun, a lot depends on who's most willing to use theirs first.

Captain_Swoop 24th June 2021 01:57 PM

Also the ability to use it effectively if they do use it.
There is a reason the US army in WW2 replaced the pistol with a carbine rifle for none combat troops like drivers, MPs, Signalmen etc.
To use a pistol effectively takes training and practice.

Many years ago, I shared an apartment with a graduate of West Point. One day he and his fellow cadets were told to bring their service pistols to a range. To save money on ammunition, apparently, each was issued only one bullet. When the officer came by to watch my roommate fire his 1911, my roommate hit a bull's eye smack dab in the center. The surprised officer nodded and said "Nice shooting." When that supervisor was out of earshot, the cadet standing next to my roommate observed that he had missed his own target entirely, and asked whether my roommate had deliberately aimed at that cadet's pristine target instead of his own. No, he had not.

False. CATL of China is the largest manufacturer, but they do not 'control the market'. LG of S. Korea is set to takeover CATL's position. Panasonic also makes EV batteries in Nevada. India is also getting into the EV battery production market.

A unit of LG Chem, this South Korean battery supplier is neck and neck with CATL as the world’s number one supplier of lithium-ion EV batteries.

Panasonic is another of the word’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturers, the electronics giant partnering with Tesla on Giga Nevada - or Gigafactory 1, as it’s also known - a $5 billion lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle component factory located in Storey County, Nevada, that produces a Panasonic EV battery exclusively for Tesla’s Model 3, Model S and Model X SUV.

Sadly, that is one of, if not the, biggest problems with today's GOP: facts mean nothing to them if they contradict what they want to believe, need to believe, or want/need others to believe in order to further their agenda. They do truly live in a post-fact world.

In a CNN interview with MTG she says she'd like to serve on Pelosi's select committee investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection (:yikes:) and would accept that the FBI wasn't involved in it if they "show proof" they weren't. She says there were "all kinds of people" at the "riot" with some wearing black clothes and some red hats. The "wearing black" is a not so subtle allusion to Antifa.

The beginning of the video is Rep Mo Brooks running away from Jim Acosta. He won't talk to CNN because it won't be honest about what he says and "lies" all the time. I know........

Thanks I watched the interview. She'd accept the FBI wasn't involved if they show proof they weren't involved. And how would they do that?

This is the problem dealing with conspiracy theorists. Greene doesn't expect she should have to show proof that the FBI WAS involved. No, of course not. That's not how this works. The Bureau should have to show proof they WEREN'T involved. What would Greene like? A sworn and notarized affidavit from all 35,000 FBI agents and staff affirming, "I was not involved in any manner, shape or form, etc." And what is she suggesting? That the FBI -- the FBI? -- had undercover agents infiltrate the crowd leaving the trump rally that morning and then 'stage' the invasion of the Capitol Building? For what purpose? To 'discredit' donald trump and his supporters? Heck, even Marj Greene isn't crazy enough to come right out and say that, but that's what this is about, correct?

Greene also brings up the issue that some of those jailed on January 6th charges are being held in solitary confinement in the DC Corrections Center. What has Greene been doing about it? Anything? Ironically, Senator Elizabeth Warren is also concerned and has probably done more to convey those concerns to the appropriate officials than MTG ever has or ever will. Below are comments Warren made to the news media over two months ago.

Quote:

[S]uch treatment doesn't sit well with Warren...“Solitary confinement is a form of punishment that is cruel and psychologically damaging,” Warren said in an interview. “And we’re talking about people who haven’t been convicted of anything yet.” The Massachusetts Democrat, a member of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's leadership team, said that while some limited uses of solitary confinement are justified, she’s worried that law enforcement officials are deploying it to “punish” the Jan. 6 defendants or to “break them so that they will cooperate.” Politico link

Actually I did see that. A couple of times. I must have blocked it out of my mind. ;)

Some of this begins to seem like political theater. Making accusations that the accusers KNOW are not true because it allows them to 1) avoid a serious discussion, 2) they chortle that parroting this kind of nonsense is a way to "own the libs," and 3) it feels so good.

I read some comments like that by some on-line right-wing dingbat yesterday. She admitted to having recently "made up two stories" -- I stopped reading before finding out what those stories were -- because by doing so she "owned the libs."

It's like high school all over again. :(

Not how the burden of proof works, Marj. This is a typical conspiricist tactic: shifting the burden of proof because it seems "logical and strong" to their tiny minds. CNN should have really stomped on that one and thrown it back at her: Prove the FBI was there, or shut up.
