Government minister resigns over Dominic Cummings' lockdown trip

Quote:

Douglas Ross, the MP for Moray, stepped down as a Scotland Office minister, saying he accepted Cummings felt he had acted in the best interests of his family but these were “decisions others felt were not available to them”.

Seems like Cummings claim to have been warning about coronaviruses last year may also be another lie, as it appears he add a chunk about it to an old blog post on 14 April which is the only mention of the virus on his blog apparently

I suppose he could have gone A1 to A66 but that's a pretty long way round.

From the coverage in th papers, it seems that he's in the clear and the Tories baying for blood yesterday have been placated by his explanation.

The woods he stopped at for his son to have a pee are interesting as well. He is reported to have been seen in Houghall woods, which is not in between his house and Barnard castle rather it is a mile or two past his house when travelling back.

Maybe his eyesight was bad after all. Clearly he drove past his house without realising it.

Although to be fair to him saying “I was warning only last year about the dangers of coronaviruses” sounds a lot more impressive than “I was warning only last month after catching one and possibly spreading it around the North East of the dangers of coronaviruses”

More on it can be found here by the way:

Meanwhile, the Dutch PM has obeyed Covid restrictions to the point that he was unable to see his mother before she died (not from Covid).

Quote:

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was unable to visit his dying mother in her final weeks because he obeyed coronavirus restrictions against visiting care homes, his office has said.

The news about Rutte emerged as Britain was gripped by a political row over allegations that the top aide to prime minister Boris Johnson broke Covid-19 rules to travel cross-country to stay on his parents’ estate.

Rutte on Monday announced the death of 96-year-old Mieke Rutte-Dilling in a home in The Hague on 13 May, nearly two months after the government shut all such institutions to the public on 20 March.

...

Dutch authorities allowed individual visits to some care homes from Monday, a measure that will be extended to all of them on 15 June.

The Netherlands – which has imposed an “intelligent lockdown” with less strict conditions than many other European countries, though there have been concerns over a return to tourism in cities like Amsterdam.

The country has so far recorded 5,830 coronavirus deaths and 45,445 infections.

KayBurley - What's the government's advice if you're struggling with covid-19 & its affected your eyesight?

Michael Gove - We advise people to seek medical advice

KayBurley - so it's not to get in a car with your four-year-old strapped in the back?

You really have to slap yourself when you watch these interviews that this is actually happening, it’s like watching a really bad sitcom.

A London police officer has told LBC he doesn't know what to say to people breaking lockdown rules when they bring up Dominic Cummings.

Quote:

Scott, a London police officer who has been enforcing the coronavirus lockdown rules, told LBC's Tom Swarbrick that he's "given people tickets for sitting on benches" in parks.

The serving officer said he didn't see "how I can go to bed tonight, knowing that I've made people pay fines for breaching lockdown when it seems if you're powerful and wealthy enough you can just do whatever you want."

The government’s approval ratings have dropped 16 points in just one day, suggesting the Dominic Cummings story on breaking lockdown rules has rocked public opinion.

Quote:

According to pollsters Savanta ComRes, the approval rating of the government now sits at -2%, falling significantly over the weekend.

Boris Johnson’s own approval rating is at -1%, a drop of 20 points in just four days

The thing is they are not going out to bat for one of them, i,e, a fellow politician or minister but for a "dime a dozen" political advisor.

I don't think Dom is "Dime a dozen", can you name another political advisor played on TV by Cumberdick Bandersnatch?

More to the point, why would they care, the next elections are in 4-5 years and the Tories have a really comfortable majority and no real way of being held accountable for their actions now.

Well a version of Alastair Campbell was played by Doctor Who, which in my book is more impressive than being portrayed by Sherlock Holmes

Do you remember when we felt smug and superior that the USA were lead by a lying, cheating arsewipe, unfettered and in plain sight and that we were too savvy to put up with such gaslighting nonsense?

It's close to inconceivable that the government might not run full-term and they can achieve all the looting and wrecking they want to achieve in one parliament, therefore they don't really give a damn about appearances.

I don't remember feeling smug. I remember looking at Boris, a man who took a job where he was literally paid to lie to the public, hurtling towards number ten at a frightening rate and being given the softest of rides by a UK press petrified of an actual left wing government and thinking, "We're next"

Carole Cadwalladr has been all over it for as long as it's been going on. She's just ignored.

Not entirely, no. I still think we're better off than the US. It's not because our politicians are better (although I do think that both Cummings and Johnson are more intelligent than Trump), it's that our checks and balances are working - at least to some degree - unlike in the US.

I disagree, the Tories are quite prepared to depose a leader who is going to cost them a future election. Whether that will stop the looting is a different matter, but it might stop the incompetence.

If you were doing 60mph in a car round the Co Durham back roads with a driver who is complaining about not being able to see, you would piss yourself too.

Senior bishops who criticised Dominic Cummings' lockdown travel say they have received death threats.

Bishops in Newcastle, Ripon and Liverpool are among those who have said they have received hate mail.

A number of church leaders criticised Mr Cummings' trip from London to Durham to self-isolate.

Bishop of Worcester John Inge said he got a "delightful email" saying: "Stay out of politics or we'll kill you."

Around here? Apparently, yes.

So far 26 Tory MPs have called for Cummings' resignation or sacking. Wonder how many more will manage to find a spine (or at least see which way the wind is blowing)?

I'm sure he does know what's in the Russia report. But he doesn't have to have anything on Johnson. Johnson is a lazy, lazy man who's been letting Cummings do his job for him. If Cummings goes, then Johnson will be left having to actually be prime minister. You can understand why he wouldn't want that.

A while back (during the leadership election IIRC) there was a rumour of a major scandal involving Johnson - the phrase "career ending" was being banded about. Then it all went quiet, so either there was never anything to it or someone (maybe Cummings) managed to put a lid on it.

It would have to be something pretty special, even given how high the bar has been raised on 'career ending' in recent years, Johnson has about one a month.

Did he forget that some of us are very familiar with the geography of County Durham, especially around Durham City itself? Or does he think we are all London-centric meejah types or the likes of Boris who barely know where Durham is?

From Marina Hyde today: The truth about why Cummings hasn't gone: Johnson is too terrified to sack him

The thing about Johnson is that he desperately wanted to become prime minister, and he desperately wanted to have been prime minister. It’s just the bit in between he struggles with.

Matt Hancock says penalty fines levied on families travelling for childcare purposes will be reviewed, in response to a question.

Andy_Ross 26th May 2020 11:13 AM

To protect Dominic Cummings, the government has so far:

Reinterpreted lockdown guidance, accepted a ministerial resignation, agreed to review all penalties on families travelling for childcare

This is crippling the government, it's forcing them to retrospectively change policy dropping fines for anyone who uses the excuse of childcare worries even if they're clearly hastily made up because that's what Cummings did.

They look ******* stupid.
