Hang on a minute. You can't just blame Italy. The ref and assistants were from Holland, 4th match official was Spanish, and a German was in charge of VAR. It really was a conspiracy with the whole of the EU ganging up on us.

I heard someone phone in a radio show yesterday who said that Tory MP Steve Baker was too liberal to be a Conservative in response to hearing that he had come out in support for the England team.

Anna Soubry former Tory Former MP, Govt Minister has also weighed in saying
"Pitiful. Steve Baker and other Conservatives now praising England’s football team for taking the knee, now speaking out against those who booed them. Nothing to do with principle or leadership all to do with piling in when they see the direction of public opinion."

Seems the Tories have a case of the GOP 'RINO' disease.

KDLarsen 15th July 2021 01:54 PM

I gather Boris Johnson gave a speech on how he plans to 'level up' the country, but apparently his recently appointed consultant has yet to deliver a best guess as to what 'levelling up' is supposed to actually mean.

Something about even more devolution, but not too much since that might transfer power over to Labour lead local councils. Oh, and something about yeast.

It does demonstrate how difficult it is to whip up an audience for a right-wing whinge-fest in the UK. This cheers me slightly. :o

Ewen Fergusson has been appointed to the Committee on Standards in Public Life. Who is he? A campaigner for standards in politics? Nah but totally coincidentally he went to uni with Johnson, but so did a lot of people so we shouldn’t take that to mean they were buddies… By the way if you want to see a photo of him at university - he is behind Johnson in the infamous 1987 Bullingdon Club photo…..

I think however we do need to give Gove some credit. He went to Johnson's wedding but didn't take his wife, instead he took Josh, his special advisor. How many people would selflessly carry on working to serve the country while attending a wedding celebration? His loyalty to the country is admirable.

The line he used was “the yeast that lifts the whole mattress of dough, the magic sauce, the ketchup of catch-up” , which beggars belief. If this is the best an Eton and Oxford education can do for you, then someone wasted their money on him...

But it's lines like that which make it credible that he might have said some of the things Zoe Williams made up in her Guardian piece - https://www.theguardian.com/politics...-of-articulate - like the bit about not understanding why folk in Rutland have a far greated life expectancy than those in Glasgow or Blackpool...But I don't expect Spaffer to have the remotest clue about health inequalities, nor for him to have heard of Marmot, let alone Townshend nor the Black Report nor Brown and Harris nor...It's a long list. I suspect he's heard of Danny Dorling but dismisses him as some "lefty academic" 'cos he used to be at Sheffield.

Guido Fawkes noted his appointment https://order-order.com/people/josh-grimstone/ back in 2018 - given the rumours that article now makes much more sense.

GBNEWS presenter Neil Oliver said earlier "My teammate Guto Harri is right to say and do as he sees fit. I do the same. That’s the ethos of the channel. Free speech. We don’t all agree with each other - that’s the point, or else where’s the debate?"

That didn't age well!

Guto Harri to leave GB News.
Harri has been suspended by the channel for making a 3 second silent anti racism gesture which was considered an “unacceptable breach” of behaviour for GB News staff.

David Ashby. Not quite a minister, but a Parliamentary Private Secretary (unpaid gofer for a Cabinet Minister; useful for officials like me who needed to get urgent notes to the Minister at the despatch box).

ETA: Ashby sued a newspaper for saying he had left his wife for a man; the case failed when his wife testified in court that it was true.
