I didn't realise that Joe Biden was running for Senedd Cymru.

Then again, what is so horrible about increased restrictions in areas where there is a spike in Covid-19 cases ?

Surely business could continue as usual without the outgoing administration having the ability to hold onto such power when they have been voted out?

Part of the problem is that, unlike in the UK, a lot of the people in charge of departments aren't professional civil servants, they are political appointees. There's no, theoretically impartial, group to keep the lights on while the very lengthy wait for the transition to take place happens.

edited to add....

Also this is America so things that work perfectly well in other countries won't work there, and whatever America does is perfect

Mueller is probably regretting that he didn't investigated Trump's finances and didn't drag Trump into an interview under oath when he could have.

It's not like he would have gotten more abuse than what he is currently getting.

I truly hope that the Trump Years will for decades sour the relation between the FBI plus IC and the Republicans.

It might not be a problem for the government to handle day to day business without the outgoing politicians in power before the new ones have been sworn in. But the government also may have to deal with emergency situations that might come up that need immediate action. (E.g. war, natural disaster, etc.) If for example the US was attacked on November 4, you would want politicians in Washington to be able to authorize a military response instead of waiting for the new congress and president to be sworn in.

(Again this is taking an 18th/19th century view of things, where travel between a distant state and Washington might take days/weeks.)

Okay, are there any links to the alleged "evidence" this crowd keeps touting, that aren't links to their own crazy sites? I'm curious to see exactly how they're misrepresenting the facts, but I'm also leery about clicking any obviously crazy links.

The thing is that you might well be able to do that with congress but changing over the whole cabinet and such takes time as in theory the new appointees should learn from the existing office holders about it.

It is certainly longer than reasonable now but it was written into the constitution when travel and communication was much slower. Newer fangled things like the telegraph have not fully worked their way into such considerations.

In any sanely run or even "insane within normal parameters" administration I'd agree with you but Biden's administration isn't going to need some turnover from the Trump one.

Sure, but that is part of the reason it is there to work the transition smoothly. The system is really unready and poorly designed for the kind of scorched earth politics we are seeing.

Biden's administration will need a couple days' delay to let the crime scene team go over all the offices first. You know everything in there is going to wind up being evidence in cases at some point, may as well let them collect it before it gets contaminated.

Already shown to have certain problems, like when Trump didn't bother to appoint anyone to be in charge of Americas nuclear weapons stockpile.

But completely restructuring the government is not exactly easy either.
