No doubt true, but just for clarification the choice of oath or affirmation, and the optional nature of "so help me God" were put in the Constitution not so much for atheists but for Quakers, who are (or were) opposed to oaths and special invocations of God.

A mate of mine who lectured at Berkeley in the mid-2000s swears he saw a redneck interviewed on local TV who said he’d “rather have a Mooslim for President than a atheist, coz at least they believe in something”.

I’m a little sceptical because I think there was a line like that in The Big Lebowski (or maybe another film) but it would tally with your view.

There is a significant number of differences between what commentators and writers are supposed to do and what elected leaders are supposed to do.

For example, every member of the US Congress takes the following oath prior to being seated in the US Congress:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."

If the divorce is handled through amending the constitution, then it doesn't violate that.

It was Walter talking about the nihilists. "Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, but at least it's an ethos."

There's actually no specific constitutional provision against secession, I think. But it produces an interesting paradox, since a person could, perhaps, promote secession of some territory, but would have to wave goodbye from the shore, so to speak, since once the deed is done one could not support it without violating the oath.

Considering the states that probably want to go, I would be happy to pack their bags for them.

Yes and no. I'd be happy to be rid of them, but they wouldn't be very far away.

I'm reminded of LBJ's answer for why he did not get rid of J. Edgar Hoover, (not probably verbatim but remembered as...) "I'd rather have him inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in."

Now, if there were only some way to protect those in red states that live in large urban enclaves.

As has been pointed out, it is more about rural vs urban, than red state vs blue state. I am pretty sure the urban blue would not be happy about having their bags packed for them. They seem okay, if not content, to live where they do due to family, jobs, climate, etc. They probably would like to see political solutions rather than to divide the states.

We're including Lauren Boebert in this thread, aren't we?

A tweet from the brunette equivalent of MTG:

Quote:

@laurenboebert
A man in Norway just killed a bunch of people with a bow and arrow.

Norway has some of the strictest gun laws around, yet mass killings still occur.

Liberals need to understand it is not the gun - it is the criminal who commits the act!
This guy in Norway killed five people with a bow and arrow. It's the worst mass killing there since 2001. For those who can't count, that 20 years. How many people have been shot to death in the US since 2001? We have more than five people murdered by guns in ONE DAY.

We really do need to have an IQ test above 110 as a requirement to run for office in this country. It would cut down on idiots like MTG, Boebert, and Tuberville getting elected.

The Anders Breivik massacre was in 2011, and was considerably worse in terms of numbers. But doesn’t detract from your point in general.

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz’s Big Fundraising PAC is Nearly Broke (motherjones.com)
Quote:

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz both have a knack for ginning up outrage and stealing headlines. All this sound and fury is assumed to hoover up dollars from the riled up grassroots, but that’s not true, according to the most recent campaign finance filings.
Quote:

In its first few months, the Put America First PAC seemed like it was off to a hot start, raising $360,000 in its first two months—but according to new campaign finance filings made by the PAC it now has just $13,000 in cash. Multiple tour stops were cancelled this summer. Gaetz and Greene did hold at least one major event in Iowa in August. Despite attracting big headlines, the rally was, apparently, a financial bust. The group spent $159,000 from July 1 to September 30, and raised just $57,000.

It's just the Put America First PAC, though, that flopped. And it was a disaster. From The Daily Beast:
Quote:

Since Gaetz and Greene kicked off their joint fundraising committee with a May 7 event at The Villages in central Florida, their campaigns and joint fundraising committee have posted a combined loss of $342,000. And according to recent filings with the Federal Election Commission, that joint fundraising effort, “Put America First,” reported only $59,345.54 in contributions. Daily Beast link
However, Marge's own fundraising PAC -- Greene For Congress -- is doing extremely well. In the first nine months of 2021 Greene raised $6 million (though I think in the last quarter that tailed off a bit too). See FEC screencap below:

The problem with right wing grifters is that they have bled their supporters from decades now - there is just not much left; definitely not when they give all their money to a bloatfish like Trump, mistaking him for a shark.

There always seems to be a little more, though, and you know, you'd be rich if not for the {place epithet here}. America would be great again, and so would you, if you just send me some more so I can return to the time when you could keep the {whatever you picked before} out of our clubs and our schools and our neighborhoods. It's a powerful message for those too stupid to know it wasn't the {yes, them again} that are poisoning the earth and turning your brain to oatmeal.

No.
The US ranks high in per capita charity and I think a small majority of that is RW/conservative extra "tithing" to parochial charities and causes.
There's really no bottom to US donations, we'll "give till it bleeds"... and most of that, if you want to get predatory, will come from the right.

Donny sets the tone, and MJT has to help spin it to preserve the big lie. Using the word panicked in the article headline was definitely click-bait, but the story still stands on its own.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/polit...ers/ar-AAPFSkf

"I recently conducted a poll on Georgia's elections and if my constituents felt their votes would count during a teletown hall," she tweeted on Monday. "Sadly, 4% said they won't even vote due to voter fraud. This is WRONG. Legal votes by Rs are just as important as stopping illegal ones."

Except there aren't any illegal votes. At least not enough to make a difference. But hey, can't let a good grift go, you know. Keep those donations coming in.

This is one situation where I hope they listen to Donny, not her. Fewer votes from deplorables can't help but be a good thing. :)

Norman Alexander 18th October 2021 09:54 PM

And now she is in a major ****-show spat with Lin Wood. Two cats fighting in a bag, and that bag should be thrown in the river.

Quote:

Trump allies Lin Wood and Marjorie Taylor Greene exchange right-wing insults in a public feud

Wood and Greene are controversial figures and staunch supporters of former President Donald Trump. Both appear to have expressed belief in the QAnon conspiracy theory, and both have spread baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 election being fraudulent.

Yet, they have fallen out in recent months, and have been engaged in a war of words on social media.

The feud appears to have begun months ago, when Marjorie Taylor Greene replaced Wood as her attorney in a defamation case.

“I am fine with her decision as I guess I was too controversial for Marjorie since I was fighting for Trump to FIX 2020 and she was NOT,” Wood wrote on his Telegram account.

After this, Wood ramped up criticisms of Greene, frequently accusing the congresswoman of not doing enough to try and overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia, and calling her a “communist” or “communist sympathizer.”

I think it would be deliciously laughable if MTG loses her next election because her gullible audience simply swallows the allegation that she's a communist. Live by the dumb, die by the dumb.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Appears To Contradict Trump by Cheryl Teh

Georgia lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene appeared this week to contradict
former President Donald Trump's stand that his supporters should not vote
in the 2022 midterm elections or the 2024 presidential elections unless the
GOP backs his election fraud claims.

"Voices online that are telling you not to vote are doing the Democrats' dirty
work. Stop listening to grifters telling you not to vote," Greene posted on
Twitter on October 18, advocating for Republicans to "get serious."

"We must root out the fraud, but we also have to VOTE," Green continued.
"If we don't vote, the Democrats win by default. It's time to audit the 2020
election, prosecute the fraud, end mass mail-in ballots, and FLOOD THE POLLS
in 2022."

Oh dear... A fight between grifters. This could get ugly.
