dmaker 9th September 2020 08:16 AM

Who is Christian Tybring-Gjedde?

Rough notes from wiki: a member of the right wing Progress Party; anti-immigration; comes from a wealthy family....

" Tybring-Gjedde was a civil servant before he entered politics. While described by commentators as far-right and anti-immigration,[1] he identifies himself as a classical liberal, particularly on economic issues and advocates limited government intervention, reduced public spending, and tax reduction.[3] More conservative and outspoken on social and cultural issues, Tybring-Gjedde has stoked controversy on numerous occasions,[4] and has been described as a national conservative.[5] He believes immigration policy to be the single most important political issue facing Norwegian society"

"He is currently estranged from his parents after a dispute over his divorce from his first wife. He is reported to have forfeited millions of NOK from the family business due to this. According to him, he is financially cut off from his original inheritance, although his father refuted this in 2013.[35] He has said that he has not met or spoken to his father for several years, and that he is open about his family having "many issues"

For his new book, Bob Woodward has taped interviews of Trump saying in February that he knows covid will be deadly, even when he's publicly claiming it will disappear, and more.
Quote:

Aside from exploring Trump’s handling of the pandemic, Woodward’s new book, “Rage,” covers race relations, diplomacy with North Korea and a range of other issues that have arisen during the past two years.

The book also includes brutal assessments of Trump’s conduct from former defense secretary Jim Mattis, former director of national intelligence Daniel Coats and others.

The book is based in part on 18 on-the-record interviews Woodward conducted with the president between December and July. Woodward writes that other quotes in the book were acquired through “deep background” conversations with sources in which information is divulged and exchanges recounted without sources being named.

CNN just played some of the tapes. Trump can deny he said these things that he said on tape, and some will believe him. Charles Barkley was once "misquoted" when he said something on tape.

If it hasn't happened already - a split-screen with Trump's words on one side, and Trump's words on the other side, on the same days, saying opposite things, could be interesting.

A Norwegian parliamentary representative from the right wing/libertarian/anti-immigration Progress Party.

Probably the mainstream politician furthest to the right since Quisling.

I probably don't need to say more.

The Progress Party is the party furthest to the right in Norwegian mainstream politics. But compared to a lot of far right parties in the rest of Europe, they're somewhat moderate.

Tybring-Gjedde, from Oslo Progress Party, is one of the biggest advocates of taking the party further right, making it a "patriotic lighthouse".

This has taken Oslo Progress Party from being one of the biggest parties in the capital, to hovering around 5%. Those of us who are not very fond of the Progress Party wish him the best in changing the rest of his party.

Needless to say, people like him absolutely adore Trump.

ETA: He said he made the announcement on Fox News because Norwegian media are lying lamestream fake news.

But it's been a heck of a week, with the denigration of the service members and this revelation that he knew and was actually privately concerned about Covid-19.

That press conference with his Press Secretary was sad and laughable. I'm glad the reporters are strongly using the word "lie" without reservation now.

I did wonder that myself. I'm also amazed that he was able to keep leaks from happening weeks ahead of time.

The most striking thing is being able to hear the actual audio of the interviews. No getting around that for factual presentation! (But I'm sure Fox News and other idiots will do it somehow.) We also seem to be hearing more from actual people, rather than anonymous sources. I like the attribution to Dr. Fauci saying "His (Trump's) attention span is like a minus." Perhaps it's time to up his odds for removal in the White House Survivor thread.

Actually, believe it or not, Charles Barkley claimed he was "misquoted" in his own autobiography. Still sounds like something Trump would say, too.

Right now the attack ads seem to focus on his attacks on military servicemen, but IMO, the way Trump deliberately let the pandemic run free, especially in blue states, for political reasons, should be the #1 thing for his opponents to use against him. It may even top every single other vile and idiotic things he has said and done.

Use the contradicting statements from Trump. Use the quote from Kushner that fighting the pandemic "wouldn't make sense politically". Use the way Trump has taken little action, and even outright sabotaged the US' ability to fight the virus, both before and after there even was a pandemic beginning to spread, and both before and after it reached the States.

I always knew that Trump, if faced with a real disaster like, say, the Cuban missile crisis, would not be up to the task. In fact this was my #1 nightmare scenario with Trump since November 2016. Covid proved me right, although I couldn't in my wildest dreams imagine he would botch it this badly.

That might be true for a lot of authors. But Bob Woodward doesn't need to do anything to boost his sales. One reason for not releasing tapes prematurely is to be able to keep talking to Trump and to other officials, getting more information that ultimately serves us. A lot of doors would have slammed shut the minute a tape was released.

Bob Woodward is a sensationalist journalist. That’s not to say that he’s all bad, but he doesn’t do these books for idealistic reasons.

Frankly, I think one of the reasons he’s releasing recordings is that his credibility has at times been reasonably questioned.

Frankly, downplaying a pandemic, knowing it will kill people (there's no nicer way to put it), is the kind of thing I expect some colonial-era European or American regime to do to some backwater country they care nothing about.

It reminds me of those tapes in the Burns-Novick documentary on Viet Nam, where one of the hawks in the presidential race (I forgot who it was), talked about how he was working to convince South Viet Nam to walk out of peace negotiations with the north, not for their own good, but because a peace treaty in 'Nam would ruin his chances of winning the presidential election back home.

So again, the kind of thing I expect from decades or centuries back, and in other parts of the world. It's surreal that Trump was/is doing it in 2020, and to his own country.

Who knows how many people would have died if we had a full-on panic. This requires steady, calm, assured leadership. People freaked out in Germany and Western Europe, and look at how many died. Those countries are now ravaged by civil unrest. It's worse than the Bowling Green Massacre.

Did Richard Nixon’s campaign conspire to scuttle the Vietnam War peace talks on the eve of the 1968 election to capture him the presidency?

Absolutely, says Tom Charles Huston, the author of a comprehensive, still-secret report he prepared as a White House aide to Nixon. In one of 10 oral histories conducted by the National Archives and opened last week, Huston says “there is no question” that Nixon campaign aides sent a message to the South Vietnamese government, promising better terms if it obstructed the talks, and helped Nixon get elected.

What is that supposed to mean? Going back to Watergate, Woodward has demonstrated a unique ability to uncover and report facts that the powerful would conceal. That's what a journalist is supposed to do. One of the great failings of modern journalism is that too many journalists see themselves as stenographers or scorekeepers, rather than advocates for truth.

Most of the MAGAchuds won't know the names, but having a list may give his opponents plenty of ammunition. (With all sorts of dirt uncovered on them.)

I agree that his vivid response was Trump's greatest failure. But I am not sure it is the best way to attack him. MAGAchuds lack both empathy and intelligence, so pointing out how trump let the blue states suffer from Covid19 is just as likely to result in a "ha ha! He is really owning the libs!" Than it is to make them change their vote.

But point out trump hates the military? Well that may get at least some to consider changing their vote (or at least sitting out the next election).
