Downing Street has declined to comment.

Only 30 guests. Shame they couldn't make an exception so all his illegitimate children could attend.

That's if it actually gets built, of course.

How can you call it a "small wedding ceremony" when it involves the maximum number of guests allowed under current rules in one of the largest cathedrals in England??

Cherie Blair was criticised for buying things from eBay, such as a 99p alarm clock.
This revealed, apparently, her ‘obsession’ with money.
Now we have a PM who doesn’t pay for his wallpaper or takeaways and his 'spokesperson' office refusing to explain who paid for his wedding.

Tory Party declares donations from companies that don't exist.

Quote:

Political-finance laws state that a company is a permissible donor only if it is registered under the Companies Act 2006, incorporated in the UK, and "carries on business in the United Kingdom."
Quote:

Insider's investigation revealed that Electoral Commission records showed the Conservative Party had accepted a £10,000 donation from Stridewell Estates, whose director was the property magnate and Tory donor Brian Gillies, in November 2019, more than three years after the company was dissolved in November 2016.

A spokesperson for Stridewell Estates had previously told Insider that "there must be a mistake. ... It is very possible that the company that donated has been recorded incorrectly."

A £6,000 donation from Unionist Buildings was accepted by the local association of the Foreign Office Minister Wendy Morton in June 2017, after the company was dissolved in January 2017 — and then a further £4,000 was registered by Morton in January 2020.
Quote:

Insider's investigation also revealed nearly £10,000 donated to the Conservative Party from a company, Conservatives In, whose director at the time was Baroness Vere of Norbiton, now a junior transport minister.
After making the donation in December 2016, Vere filed for the company to be struck off in February 2017. Companies law requires directors to affirm when they apply for their company to be dissolved that the company has not "at any time in the previous three months ... traded or otherwise carried on business."

Quote:

Insider has contacted the Electoral Commission and the Conservatives for comment.

The Conservatives had previously told Insider: "Donations to the Conservative Party are properly and transparently declared to the Electoral Commission and are published by them."

He was confirmed in the C of E while at Eton, and his previous marriages were done in that particular branch, and thus under (Catholic) canon law, they weren't considered valid marriages for the purpose of divorces.

However, someone pointed out that in order to have a Catholic wedding, Johnson would have to be in a stage of grace, ie. he'd have confess his sins and obtain absolution*. Pity the priest who had to sit through that ordeal...

* As an adherent to the C of D, I have no idea if that's the case or not.

My first wife was nominally Catholic but we got married in a CoE church. My second wife Catholic and wanted an RC wedding to make her parents happy. The Catholic priest made inquiries and because my first wife did not get approval from her parish priest the first marriage was not recognized by the Catholic church. I was at no point asked to attend confession. Nor would I have done so.

We were asked to attend some sort of series of courses where an old celibate priest was telling us how it was ok to enjoy sex and how the rhythm method worked. "Do you understand?" At which point I'd had enough so "Oh yes, you're relying on postovulatory phase consistency and....." He shut up and moved on and we were told we probably didn't need that course. My wife thought it was hilarious.

John Bercow a Tory MP appointed as Speaker by a Tory government was punished for not being partisan by the Tories when they withheld a peerage from him so that he could not sit in the House of Lords
He was the first speaker of the house in 230 years to not be automatically given one.

Meanwhile the son of a Russian oligarch and Tory party donor was given a title.

Major design flaws have been identified in the Army's new fleet of armoured vehicles.

An internal leaked government report also raises serious doubts as to whether the £5.5bn Ajax Armoured Vehicle programme will be delivered on time and within budget.

Problems include excessive vibration and noise.
An investigation by the government's Infrastructure and Projects Authority says the "successful delivery of the programme to time, cost and quality appears to be unachievable".

There have been reports of yet more problems with the turret and gun of the main Ajax vehicle. The Infrastructure and Projects Authority criticises the current contract for focusing on "schedule and milestone payments over quality".

The M.O.D. halted trials for four months following complaints that crews were suffering from temporary hearing loss and aching joints.
The M.O.D. says the trials resumed in March. But the leaked report says crews are still having to observe strict health and safety restrictions, including "limiting time in the platform to one hour 30 before a crew change or speed restrictions of 20mph" - which is less than half its top speed.

The report also notes the "vehicle cannot reverse over an obstacle more than 20cm high". Defence experts say many of the problems stem from additional armour protection being put on the original hull, which has seen an increase in weight from 19 to more than 40 tonnes.

A Tory donor who was made a peer against the advice of the Lords’ appointment watchdog made a half-a-million-pound donation to Boris Johnson’s party only days after taking up his seat.

Electoral Commission records show that Lord Cruddas donated £500,000 to the Conservative Party on February 5 – three days after being bestowed with the traditional scarlet robes of the House of Lords.

The prime minister sparked criticism in January after brushing aside objections by the upper chamber’s Appointments Commission to give the Brexit-backer a place in the Lords.

The vetting body had raised “historic concerns” about the City financier, which related to allegations that he offered access to then-prime minister David Cameron in exchange for donations.

The government plans to build the ship in the UK, at a reported cost of £200m.

The name of the new flagship has yet to be announced, but the Daily Telegraph has suggested the ship will be named after the Duke of Edinburgh, who helped design Britannia.

The new vessel would be used to promote British interests around the world - including hosting trade fairs and diplomatic meetings - as the UK seeks to build links and boost exports following Brexit.

The tendering process for its design and construction will begin soon - with an emphasis on utilising British design expertise and the latest green technology.

Downing Street said costs for the "construction and operation" of the ship would be confirmed after the tendering process concluded.

Construction is set to start as early as next year, with the ship expected to enter service within the next four years.

The vessel, which is set to be in service for about 30 years, will be part of the Royal Navy and crewed by it.

Bercow was elected following a vote by MPs during Brown’s time as Prime Minister. He got over the line due to Labour MPs voting for him rather than Sir George Young - who did get a peerage.

That aside, it does seem very petty, and some of the people getting peerages have done a lot less to serve their country (for a more than decent wage, of course) than Bercow. Surely the Tories weren’t annoyed by him following proper Parliamentary procedure on Brexit?

Not to mention Bercow was more or less seen as a moderate, with there even being stories of Labour contemplating an attempt to persuade him to cross over to their side. And indeed he has subsequently described himself as a soft leftie. He certainly made few friends with Tories as a speaker, ie. recall the attempt by Cameron to change how the Speaker is elected, largely seen as a blatant attack on Bercow's position.

On top of that, I seem to recall most of the hardcore Brexiteers (lead by Reese-Mogg) were infuriated by what they saw as improper procedures improvised by Bercow in the waning days of the May premiership, ie. allowing a vote on the Grieve amendment to the government business motion, and later refusing a third vote on the original Withdrawal bill, as the same bill had already been rejected by the House.

UK Govt tells civil servants to stop referring to Scotland & Wales as “countries”.

Civil service & diplomats are to refer to the UK as “one country” in future communications.

The ‘Union Unit’ under Boris Johnson’s direct command wants to ensure the end of the phrase “constituent countries” in future.

I think this was already on The Times website on Saturday evening.
I'm having trouble accessing it at the moment the moment though.

Also reports that officials have also been asked to stop using the phrase “devolved nations” and only use “devolved administrations”.

Seems to be the Welsh who have picked up on this news far more in the last few hours than the Scots, perhaps they already expect this kind of stuff.

Certainly one which conservatives would honor and revere.
