I think that some of Trump's humor is self-deprecating. I know that's strange, given how thin his skin is, but pleading "Please like me" is best viewed as a joke and that this is likely endearing to some.

Of course, he's an odd duck. I regard some of his sayings as likely to be self-mocking humor, but it's hard to fit that interpretation with his refusal to admit "covfefe" was a typo. On the other hand, it all fits a bit better when you remember that Spicer said that the word was understood by a mysterious group of insiders. That is another example of something so strange that perhaps it must have been intentional humor.

Look for a "bombshell" (cough cough) smear attack on Hunter Biden in the next week or so as Trump's Hail Mary. FoxNews is salivating over a story about Giuliani's laywers having "dirt" on him and pushing it hard to their viewership.

That's gonna depend on what type of hospital do you mean. There is only a single level 1 trauma center in the state of New Mexico (UNM-H). So, lots of people live further than 10 minutes away. People in the southern 3rd or so of the state would be air lifted to El Paso. Most counties have a hospital of some kind though.

Since we've come back to the hospitals, also from the link is that about a quarter of rural Americans live 34 minutes or greater from a hospital. Last I knew, the rural population of the US was about 20% of the total, which puts the >34 minute crowd at about 5% or 1 in 20 of the total population, which would be >16 million people.

Have to say, 34 minutes to a hospital does not seem that far. I live in a Canadian city of medium size (~1 milion) with multiple hospitals. I looked at Google maps and some of the people that live in the suburbs are roughly 30 minutes from the nearest hospital. (And that is not counting rush hour traffic)

I think that you're a bit off here. Covfefe was fairly certainly an accident, rather than a joke, and one that quickly had an embarrassing story attached to it (the suggestion that Trump had probably fallen asleep on the toilet) that was being circulated. What happened after that was an effort to save face for Trump, including on Spicer's part. Trump does not like being embarrassed.

The "Please, please like me" bit may well be a half-joke, sure, though. The kind of "joke" that also reveals the true feelings of the speaker. Like - "Russia, if you're listening..."

Or whichever Trump sycophant he can install to do his whim regardless of legality.

I went to hear Dean talk many years ago at the U of WA. I was impressed by what he had to say. I've posted about this before. He said when you are around the POTUS it's a bit like being around a famous actor. You get caught up in it and that's how professional people like lawyers break laws when they otherwise wouldn't.

I've not read the book but Dean knows his stuff.

Trump tells his story again about he how and Melania recently watched the evening news expecting to see coverage of his Nobel nominations, but were dismayed that the news was covering a hurricane in Florida and flooding in Iowa instead. This is supposed to make the media look bad.

I'm looking forward to this being the last continuation of "The Trump Presidency".

Just as a general comment, I'm seeing Trump has no eye for details. Everything for him is some sort of big concept, with any details and follow-up to be completed by minions. He just has these big ideas. For example:

Trade deals with Gyna. Handshakes, smoojing and formal dinners are Trump's thing. But any guidance for actual policy and treaties, not so much. That's for the minions to do to make him look good. So far, not a lot of progress.

The Wall. Big picture - Trump wants it built. Small picture - way too expensive, growing local opposition, Mexico says stick the invoice up your arse, and it is utterly ineffective anyway. But the minions involved are still trying to make this happen for him by pretending that any replacement wall is "new". Good enough for Trump's 30,000ft view!

Healthcare, specifically demolishing Obama's ACA. An EO is as far as he knows what to do, and that in itself is merely a directive for somebody to do something...after four years just ranting about it to everyone in earshot. He just wants the minions to get it done, and tell him when it is so he can claim the credit. His overarching aim is to stick it to Obama, not anything to do with the pesky details of pre-existing conditions, or cheaper costs, etc.

Middle East peace. He wants it done for his own ego. So he delegates to the chinless wonder, Kushner, who faffs about "meeting people" and being generally ignored for a few years. As Trump's and Beni's fortunes wane, some countries there see an opportunity to play power politics in the region and get cheap weapons, a long-running sport more popular there than soccer. So they play nice and pretend he has convinced them. Lo! Trump, who quite literally can be distracted by a shiny ball, claims he has created "peace in our time" in a region riddled with a myriad of complexities. Will he sell them the invisible F-35's? That's merely a detail he cares nothing about.

There are plenty of other instances. But generally, Trump is not a details person. He has always just had the "big ideas". He pays minions to make them happen. And that's how he expected the presidency to run, and how expects the election will fall in his favour. Make it so, Number One!

Which could be workable except that his only criterion for hiring minions is whether or not they will agree with everything he says and constantly praise him. No other qualification matters.

After the story today, maybe a lot. The laundering of the Egyptian loan that Trump then loaned to the campaign crossed into a fairly serious felony. This isn't Cohen and a campaign finance violation. This could be a money laundering charge as the money laundered was then used to commit a crime. The penalties here could mean real time.

I have seen no evidence that Trump even has a sense of humor. Have you ever seen him laugh. Not smile, which he only does at his rallies, but laugh at something genuinely funny.

Even worse, he think he is utterly incapable of a self-deprecating comment. His ego won't allow it. No, his "Please like me" is best viewed in the context in which it was said: he's way behind in the presidential race and is desperate to turn that around.

With that linkage to Spicer plus saying that something quite strange suggests there is humor involved looks to me like bending over backward to give Trump the benefit of doubt. Trump has given no reason for us to give him that benefit.

Neither will he.

Maybe he'll start doing a podcast from Trump Tower. Then the thread can be changed to "The Trump Residency."
