Back when the Americas were truly great.

Although mainstream archeologists believe the Chaco culture of that time eventually fell apart under pressure from a decades-long drought, some say that great American culture declined because it became excessively conservative.

My high school chemistry teacher once remarked that the people living in "the good old days" referred to them as "these trying times".

Back when there were no YT videos. Or Twitter. Or even an internet to bitch across.

I heard he collaborated with commies during the war!!!

People look at the past with rose colored glasses when, in fact, people living it at the time bitched about how awful things were just like they do now. The theme song to "All in the Family" reflected that rosy outlook of the past even in the 70's.

Boy, the way Glenn Miller played
songs that made the hit parade
Guys like me we had it made
Those were the days
Didn't need no welfare state
ev'rybody pulled his weight
gee our old LaSalle ran great
Those were the days
And you knew who you were then
girls were girls and men were men
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again
People seemed to be content
fifty dollars paid the rent
freaks were in a circus tent
Those were the days

That was a fantasy land that never existed (though I really like Glenn Miller).
This mindless nostalgia knows no political boundaries though. A lot of people have a very starry eyed opinion of the 60's making it seem like one big Woodstock love in. The 60's were not like that , folks. ( And Woodstock was not that great either (except for the music)It was a pretty big mess in reality.

Wasn't All In The Family the US comedy show that copied a British show where the racist father was meant to be the butt of all the jokes because racists be stupid and removed all of the satire from it?

ETA: Yes, it was.

Norman Lear ,producer of All In The Family, actually bought the US rights to "Till Death Do Us Part" so it was a legal copy.
Another hit US comedy show with a lot of satire in the 70's "Sanford And Son" was based on a British Sitcom, "Steptoe and Son" changing Steptoe and his son from Conkneys in London to Afro Americans in L.A.
Even now days, one line from the show... j"It's the Big One, Elizabeth" is a pretty well known meme.

You're partially correct. The satire was not removed and Archie Bunker remained the butt of all the jokes. The show exposed him as a racist right-winger and he always ended up looking stupid.

I've never seen the original Brit version so I can't say if he was "more" sympathetic or not. I do know that Archie's racism/bigotry was never shown in a sympathetic light.

Homer isn't racist or bigoted; he's just stupid.

Well, Alf Garnet was famously disappointed that the racists in Britain didn't realise he was mocking them.

As opposed to the GOP.

And no matter how many times you point out to the right wing that the difference is the Democratic Party leaders do not support the antivaxxer POV, they just keep repeating the false equivalence.

As evidence of the GOP's anti-vaccine position:

Quote:

Tennessee's top vaccine official says she has been fired as punishment for doing her job in the face of political pushback.

Dr. Michelle Fiscus was caught up in a controversy after she passed along legal guidance to health providers saying teenagers do not need parents' consent to receive a COVID-19 vaccine shot — a position established by decades of state law.

"Specifically, it was MY job to provide evidence-based education and vaccine access so that Tennesseans could protect themselves against COVID-19," Fiscus said in a scathing statement about her firing. "I have now been terminated for doing exactly that."
Quote:

Because of the pushback from lawmakers, Fiscus said, Tennessee is halting all of its vaccination outreach efforts for teenagers and children – not only for COVID-19 but also for measles and other illnesses.
Quote:

The doctrine, which says teens from ages 14 to 17 don't need to get their parents' or guardians' consent before getting the vaccine, was posted online "and is blessed by the Governor's office on the subject," the legal office said, according to Fiscus. The office reportedly added, "This is forward facing so feel free to distribute to anyone."

But when Fiscus sent a memo sharing that guidance, critics seized on the message and called it governmental overreach, threatening to disband the state Department of Health despite the COVID-19 pandemic. At a hearing in the Tennessee Legislature, a Republican lawmaker said the Health Department's ad campaign encouraging teens to get vaccinated amounted to an attempt "to target children."
This is just plain crazy. But crazy and GOP have become synonymous.

Back to MTG. She'll be appearing live with Matt Gaetz Saturday night at an America First rally in Orange County California. Marj and Matt are sounding the alarm, President Biden is hacking kids' text messages in order to track them and vax them. Sure, that sounds logical, right kids?

The GOP crusade against science is 100% rooted in it's dependence on the Religious Right's vote. They basicallly hate science because it conflicts with the Bible.

Oops. The Tweet I posted earlier was 'tweeted' by Marj yesterday but...
Quote:

A Laguna Hills event center canceled plans to host an “America First” rally on July 17 after learning the speakers were slated to be two of the most controversial Republicans in Congress: Reps. Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene. “We just want to stay clear of that,” Javad Mirtavoosi, general manager of Pacific Hills Banquet & Event Center, said by phone [last] Friday. Orange County Register link
It was reported Greene’s campaign disputes the account of why the rally was cancelled by Pacific Hills. The Register also noted, "They’re still selling tickets for a rally..." But while they are STILL advertising the event, a new location has yet to be found and time is running out.

But when the 'Brain Trust' put their minds to it, anything is possible. Correct? ;)

Stacyhs 14th July 2021 05:57 PM

They'd hate to have to return the money people paid for those tickets. After all, the money was the main purpose of the rally in the first place.

I think it goes beyond that.

The right has lost the culture wars; the younger generations believe in things that are alien to them, and they can't get that back. So they get more and more extreme, to the point where you deny reality itself because it can't agree with you. You form your own reality; it's less about being correct than about sharing an experience, and feeling like you "belong" in this group. They "don't recognise this country anymore", so they've crafted something they can all be part of -- a post-fact reality.

I agree, but I was talking specifically about the Anti Science .particulary the Anti Vax ...stuff that is sweeping the GOP. I remain convinced the religious right i at the root of that.

What is interesting is how many of these people seem to have no interest in anything but "Owning the Libtards". It all about name calling with no discussion policy.

It takes some intelligence and information to actually "discuss" a topic. See the problem there?

It's hard to keep track. I think all of those groups merged. Anti-vax, consipracy theorists, evangelicals, sovereign citizens, white supremacists, etc. Everyone who stands to lose (or, more correctly, to be put on everyone else's level) from the coming times.
