On the contrary, if he had we could then rule that option out.

Indeed. That 77% of votes are wasted should be an outrage to any democratic minded person, as should the fact that 46% of the popular vote translates to an 80 seat majority.

But that's preaching to the choir obviously.

I am getting a definent whiff of the Party members attitude toward the Proles in Orwell 1984 in some of the comments about the British voting public coming from some on the left here.

The thing is that the Conservatives are riding high in the polls despite having bungled pretty much every aspect of the Coronavirus response bar the vaccination programme. The public seem not to care one jot about the billions of pounds wasted on boondoggles like "Project Moonshot" or "Test, tack and trace" and/or the cronyism which resulted in important contracts being awarded to companies with no credentials apart from a mate being a director.

The public at large don't seem to be concerned about the tens of thousands of needless deaths, they don't seem concerned about the long-term impact of Covid on the economy and public health. They do seem very concerned about when the pubs will be open and whether they can go on holiday.

gypsyjackson 3rd May 2021 01:07 AM

Ah, thanks. I thought it was an odd response to complaining about FPTP.

I must admit, I rather assumed all the people ‘on the left’ in this thread (presumably nearly all to an average US voter, more so perhaps for a libertarian) would be among the proles. I know I am, not that I get to vote in the UK any more.

A lot of them also seem pleased that the economy and foreign relations have been wrecked by Brexit.
Even the ones deported from their homes seem to still support the govt over it.

Sweej effing jeebus but Donaldson as the moderate candidate? has anyone seen an Overton window? It seems to have moved recently.

And I'd count as left by Merkinanian standards, being as I'd never vote Tory for anything and don't consider that most of the Democrats count as a party of the left - One Nation Tories on a good day mebbe.

I am getting a definite whiff of a complaint that First Past the Post is insufficiently democratic when compared to Proportional Representation which would create a government more in line with the British voting public.

Which do you think is better FTFP or PR?

I am still occasionally surprised by how much inconvenience, discomfort, and outright loss people can put up with in futile efforts to admit that they might, possibly have been mistaken about something.

What extraordinary times we live in.

IMO the British (English ?) public are giddy at the prospect of returning to nearly normal life and are going to give the Conservatives all the credit.

I guess we have forgotten 150,000 deaths and tens of billions of pounds wasted and/or misappropriated. I guess we don't care about cronyism, being lied to, the government behaving illegally and rank incompetence so long as the NHS (soon to be flogged off to the highest bidder) gets us vaccinated and we can go to the pub and off to Spain on holiday.

We get the government we deserve. :(

If you define "better" as "more accurately reflecting vote share in seat share" then Proportional Representation is vastly "better".

Remember Belfast South.

Bigotry and focus against "the others" helps wallpaper over a lot of personal suffering. Unfortunately.

Boris Johnson agrees to Dyson's request on tax and, hey presto, his brother Jo Johnson gets made a Dyson director.

Is that how it went?

Quid Pro Quo. Corruption staring us right in the face.

eta, Sorry I did Jo a disservice. I should have put Baron Johnson of Marylebone.

Boris gave him the title last year.

At this point I’m just grateful for the option of private medical insurance. I wouldn’t want to be treated by a political institution.
An institution so sensitive it needs a round of applause just to finish work.

Bin Head is going to finish above him in the Polls isn't he?

I guess that the key is to be so blatant about it that people simply discount it because "no-one could be that obvious" - and to be a tousle-haired toff.

Just had the Liberal candidate for Wiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner at my door. I'm ashamed to say I wasn't aware that job would also be on the ballot tomorrow as well as my local Councillor, I really should have found that out by now.

Anyway we had a chat and she thinks she's in with a chance despite this being a pretty Conservative area because the Tory candidate is unpopular on account of having been convicted of fox hunting a few years ago.

Yep, the Tories are fielding a candidate for Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner who has a criminal conviction. They just don't care, do they?
