Never underestimate the power of stupidity in large numbers.

But I was talking about MTG personally. She is already making herself nonviable for re-election at the start of her term. She has already shot herself (figuratively, fortunately) in both feet multiple times on the way to Washington, now she is starting up her own legs by continuing to go on about the insurrection and unfettered Trump support.

So while she may be a local hit in Upper Holler, Georgia, her conservative opponents will rapidly find a better alternative who doesn't make them look like swivel-eyed fools also.

You're from Australia, so I'll forgive your rose colored glasses optimism about the body politic in the USA.

Had that beaten out of me when Trump was first elected.

The alternatives to MTG may well be much akin to Albert Speer politically - wimpy hangers-on. But at least they don't randomly threaten to shoot people in the street they don't like.

Also, Australian politics tends to be like Canadian politics, but without all the hoopla and flair..or charisma. With few exceptions, Australian PMs tend to be so soft and colourless that they resemble transparent gas clouds. My expectations are quite low... ;)

They had that in the equally Republican Trump supporting neurosurgeon. The local Daisy Maes and Li'l Abners still chose her.

I know, right? A travel company could clean up with package coach tours for foreigners through certain sections of the good ole' US of A.

Understood. Next time round, the state GOP will ensure that doesn't happen. By hook or by crook...

I've been to the USA many times, for both work and travel. LOVE the place. Like the people. Would love to go back again. But until the COVID is done with properly and people like MTG are put back in their boxes, we won't.

The people are great and we have everything in the way of scenery/climate/ geography. Just don't mention certain things in certain places. It's kind of like pit bulls. Lovely dogs...unless you get one that's a little crazy and you trigger it. Don't mention Bernie Sanders or AOC in Oklahoma. Don't mention Trump in downtown Portland OR . And in the name of all that is holy, don't mention gun control in Wyoming or gay conversion in San Francisco. Other than that, we're pretty sane. Or not. :p

ETA: Just stay away from Trump rallies. I can't speak for their sanity.

Just make sure your bus has armed guards. Paint Old Glory on both sides of the bus. And don't let your passengers talk any funny foreign language within hearing of any locals.

Good points. They might be accused of being bussed in to vote illegally.

It's the old "Oh, I know! I'll be clever!" routine again. The sort of clever that thought no one would be able to decode "knee grow" during the Obama years.

"They're going to make me wear a mask? I know, I'll wear a mask with "Trump Won!" on it, that way they can't stop me from reminding everyone who sees my picture how far out of touch with reality I am! Take that, libtards!"

In general, but in particular, the 14th Congressional District of Georgia. I have had ties to it since 1984. My wife's 3 children live there as well as her ex-husband and other relatives. I still have in-laws from a previous marriage who live there. At many Xmas's, Thanksgivings, grandkids birthdays, etc., I have come in contact over the years with a portion of the 14th District, relatives and their neighbors, and be it the small sample that it is, MTG seems certainly an adequate representative of their district. Even if she were to get caught with the pool boy wouldn't sink her.

My condolences.

I was lucky; my dad was adopted out of the panhandle of Florida where his bio father's people live in the 2nd Congressional District. Matt Gaetz is their Rep.
He, and thus, I were saved from that hell.

I live in the 14th district, although I can literally walk to the 13th district in 5 minutes. Your assessment is accurate.

The next 2-4 years is going to be a bonanza for this kind of crap. Republicans no longer have to deal with the practical responsibilities of governing, they can just crank this culture war stuff up to 11. MTG is the exact right kind of politician to thrive in this environment of intentional ****-stirring and hatemongering.

Conservatives lost on the matter of gay rights, so now it's time to make trans people into the boogieman.

The sad part is, this probably plays exceptionally well with grassroots Republicans. trump called Greene a "rising star in the Republican Party."

I doubt it. President Trump doesn't like sharing the limelight and Marjorie Taylor Greene certainly knows how to grab attention.

The word that describes her is one that the former guy used a lot - “nasty”.

Regardless of her politics she’s just a nasty, petty person.

I wish that story had been at the bottom of the hour or not covered at all. It was fine covering the **** when she was losing her committee assignments. Covering her silly, petty little sign though amounted to the news media letting her live rent free in their heads.

Disgusting?
The Rep across the hall from Greene displays a symbol of a political position with the expressed intent of making a political rival "look at it every time she opens her door".

Responding to that by displaying an opposing viewpoint on her own door (not a viewpoint promoting genocide, persecution, or discrimination- just an opposing one) is described as "disgusting" behavior.
That about sums up a lot of "our" politics thes days, I guess.

Clearly, that bastion of unbiased reporting CNN does not think so.

They choose to label the response ( a response in kind, no less) as "antagonizing" before going on to describe how the response was provoked by deliberate, clearly stated trolling.

.....llinois Rep. Marie Newman, whose daughter is transgender, posted a video on Twitter of her hanging the pink and blue transgender pride flag outside her office Wednesday afternoon, captioning that Greene tried to block the act "because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is 'disgusting, immoral, and evil,'" adding, "thought we'd put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door" with winking and transgender flag emojis.

Somehow, that was not "antagonizing".

Actually, One person trolls another- announcing their intent to troll.
The trolled individual responds in kind.

Instead of taking a lesson on the corrosive nature of trolling (a favorite technique of that recently departed "he who's name shall remain unspoken") Useful idiots line up to attack based upon which "side" the participants seem to be on- taking as much liberty with how they choose to hyperbolise the incident as they desire.

Is your position that Newman out-trolled MTG and therefore we should be angry at Newman?

I mean, she hung a flag and that was enough to draw MTG offsides. The game is being played, now it is just a matter of who is the better player.

Had she hung the flag without announcing that she was doing it to troll her office-mate, the response would not have been appropriate.
The flag is a pretty vague symbol, after all, and could have meant anything.
She chose to give it a more specific meaning when she flat out stated that she was hanging it there to troll Greene.

Greene responded in an exactly appropriate way. In kind, and directly towards the antagonizer (labelled thus, again, because she specifically stated that hanging it there was an attempt to antagonize Greene).

Calling that act "disgusting" contributes nothing, and if anyone should face our ire, it is those who are doing so.

I saw her hanging an ignorant sign, not a flag. What flag did she hang to represent her bigotry? Was it the rebel flag?

varwoche 26th February 2021 09:46 AM

She blames antifa for the insurrection. Meanwhile, one of her best friends was a participant.

Close ally of Marjorie Taylor Greene among those in Capitol mob

tyr_13 26th February 2021 09:56 AM

Some in the GOP are worried that Greene's unreasonable bigotry is making their support for more politely toned bigotry look bad.

Of course.
If I call someone "ugly", and they respond with "you are not attractive"- it was not a response "in kind" because the words used were not identical.
I shall take that under advisement.
