I'm interested in all manner of things, but my background is in mental health, so a load of health issues. I also studied environmental sciences before that and maintain an interest in those sort of areas.

The MH part of my background also gave me an interest in how and why people believe certain things, how we perceive the rest of the world and each other, how we understand ourselves.

My mother used to say that the first word I learned was "Why?", followed rapidly by "How?" and that it was all downhill from there. I reckon that if I was US-ian I'd have to come from Minnesota...

And a Neutral Milk Hotel fan, too. Welcome!

Over the years I have found that, being a member hereas well as a member of the graham Hancock forum, means that the ideas in the latter, many of which totally lack any kind of rational reasoning, can be challenged with a greater degree of confidence and knowledge because of being here!

You'll be right at home here.

There's also a Home Gardening Thread in Community that looks pretty suitable, although I'd be concerned about someone who doesn't just let their carrots flower, but is the King of doing so.

Are we sure that "carrot flower" isn't a euphemism for something?

Possible, but not one I've heard of. Be a bloody strange colour, for starters.

(I suspect it's more about carving carrot flowers, but thought I'd get that one in anyway)

As MoeFaux noted, it's a reference to a couple of songs on Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea album - King of Carrot Flowers, Parts 1 & 2. Exactly what Jeff Mangum, the writer, means by that is another thing altogether (my interpretation of the lyrics of Pt1 seems to be at odds with everyone else's).

It's a beautiful album. Haven't listened to it in some time as a whole, but listen to the track your name is based on at least once or twice a year as it will randomly pop into my head.

Actually, come to think of it, Two-Headed Boy might be my favorite from that album. That one comes to me quite a bit, has a lot of passion in it.

Hello everyone........ A nice site here,I wanted to register and make friends here :)

Welcome Dude111, I'm sure you abide 111 times more than that other 'Dude'.

Wait, are the 1's supposed to represent exclamations? So, it's like "Dude!!!"?

Welcome everyone.

Hmmmmmm no not really........ Im not sure why I picked 111

Thank you for the welcome and welcome to all!!

This site is quite fast!!!!! (VBB is my favourite software (3.x and lower))

Welcome, Dude. You have flattered the Forum, and that is good. The site *is* fast! Lightning fast! Perfect for posting and skipping through the subforums. Enjoy!

Some people are going to think you are a plant. There is a contingent of people here who think that running old software is a major impediment to forum growth.

Shemp is a great architect. He has designed many beautiful buildings. Do they call him Shemp the architect? No! He's an engineer, who has built many bridges that are used daily. Do they call him Shemp the bridge builder? No. But he ***** just one goat...

Y'all gonna scare all the new members all away. Haven't had one since the G-word was mentioned.
If you have to mention the G-word, rather replace it with something nice. We will all know what you mean.
Something nice and sweet, like a flower perhaps? Maybe geranium or gladiolus or goldenrod?

I don't think you can do that with a gladiolus or goldenrod.

Not sure about geraniums.

So... how about a "Welcome Back"?

It's been... about a year and a half since I was here last. Not on purpose, it just got chaotic. Got a new job, moved to a new state, new job is super busy, and ISF is blacked at work so my posting opportunities dropped dramatically. Then when I tried to post from home, the system decided it didn't like my password, but the password reset option locked me into a horrible loop of "here, try tapatalk!" that wouldn't let me actually reset it.

Now I'm working from home for the foreseeable future... and it turns out that once I'm outside of my company's firewall I can actually get here! So now I have the ability to waste time with you guys again!

Welcome back, nice to see you!

Just when I come back to Puget Sound, I see you have left. Our relationship is doomed.

Unfortunately so... :o

I traded the land of nice temperatures for a land of sun. I was a bit surprised, but I really like Arizona. It's beautiful here, with a lot more plant life than I expected. And the skies are gorgeous, I can see forever. And so much sun. I didn't realize how much I missed sunshine. I actually like the desert, I like the dry climate. The oddest thing so far is that I adapted much quicker than I expected - It's 80F outside, and we've got the windows open... and I've got on long-sleeves. In another couple of hours the sun will be going down, and I'll get chilly.

It's still so weird to me. In WA, 80F was hot and sweaty and uncomfortable, and I lamented the loss of the wonderful 65F days. Now, 65F is cold and I need a sweater, 80F is perfectly comfortable and a little cool if there's a breeze, and 105F is a nice warm day.

That weather sounds right to my liking, EC. Something about a nice 100 degree desert day is just divine.

Good to see you back. Glad you battered your way in.

I didn't even know we had a new state. What's it called? ('Edwin' has a nice ring to it. I hope they called it 'Edwin'.)

Hey there. I've been a professional sports handicapper for 40 years. I had a few things published back in my youth. "Scientists, Gamblers, and Magicians" in The Humanist, some op-eds and stuff. Anyway, everything in life has become political, and I have discovered that many if not most of my gambling compatriots are pretty much alt-right. I signed up here for both my sanity and to eventually post a link to my blog, since I'm looking for sane feedback.

I attended one of the original CSICOP conventions way back at Buffalo and have followed Randi and Nickell forever. Oh yeah, my handle is my name. I'm not really into the whole anonymity thing.

Stay safe!
