He can't help himself. When he lies and gets called on it (in a more massive way than the other lies he gets called on) he has to keep spinning the tale as if that makes it true. And it probably does make it more true to him.
This isn't getting way enough traction that it deserves. He is trying to assert this as evidence that he cares - that he called Mel in the White House.

If this were a black person accused of a crime, how far would it go for them to claim that they called someone thousands of miles away when they were staying with them?
Shoot, that wouldn't even work for a white person accused of a crime. But the president is just allowed to make up a nonsense alibi?
