Cont: The Trump Presidency Part III

I think they might benefit from someone else saying that, though. Don't say "you've been bamboozled," find a photogenic moderate* conservative to say "I was bamboozled," for them to project their own feelings onto.

*Everyone's a moderate in their own minds.

Very much this! But who knows how well even this would work? When even a very conservative, visible, and well known Republican leader, such as Senator Flake, comes out publicly with a lengthy and carefully constructed indictment of Trump's failings it ends up largely ignored by Trump's supporters. But again, one has to try to convert those who are convertible and this is probably the best approach as I see it.

This is the first time I've seen such a cult of personality in the USA during my life time. It is both fascinating and scary. For his most fervent supporters Trump can do no wrong no matter what. I imagine that surrounded by complete desolation, burned out buildings, dead corpses, their own lives ruined, their children killed, many of the supporters of Mussolini (chosen to avoid Godwinning the thread) still fervently believed in him. No doubt the same will be true of many of the followers of Kim Jong-un- something important to consider if the USA tries a military intervention.

No, I mean ask them the question flat-out: do you want me to lie or to tell you the truth?

They want their version of truth. That's the crux of the problem because there aren't multiple versions of the truth.

Despite Mueller's indictments, Donald Trump's approval ratings are up :(

http://news.gallup.com/poll/203198/presidential-approval-ratings-donald-trump.aspx

Up from 35% to 38% overall

Up to 83% with Republicans - his highest since July, up to 35% among independents, joint highest since June :(

I'm not surprised that he's still doing well with Republicans, but I did expect him to take a hit with independents. I still think that bad news regarding the Russia connections with hurt him in the long run with voters outside of his base.

I... ugh. Trump’s nominee to serve as head of the Council on Environmental Quality doesn’t know if water expands as it warms.

I don't think the people whom ads are made for are the kind to remember a senator from another state ragequitting a year or two ago. Those who would have probably already made up their minds and wouldn't be much influenced.

But then, I don't understand political ads anyway. When a normal product references a competitor in an ad, they never do it by name. It's always "other leading brands" and suchlike. Even if you're saying their product is crap, you don't give them free name recognition. That's common sense. But political ads all start with "TED JERKWAD is a poopyhead," as if the attention were a bad thing (it isn't).

If you ask me, the secret to Trump's success was sailing in to office on a wave of newsmen going TRUMPTRUMPTRUMPTRUMPTRUMP. They weren't saying anything *good* about him, but they sure as hell made everyone know he was important.

And yet, like as not, her appointment will be confirmed because every single GOP representative will vote for her. For many it'll be cause her global-warming denialism and her ignorance of basic science is something they can sign up to and for the rest it'll be on partisan lines.

Their mouths would say, "Truth" but their hearts would say, "lie."

I wish I had the Purple Man's powers. I'd put myself in the position of interviewing politicians and I'd start each interview with, "Now, tell me the truth." Can you imagine a dedicated journalist who could literally compel people to tell the truth?

That is a fantastic premise for a series!

Didn't Jim Carrey make a movie like that? ;)

Well, he certainly put China in their place over trade. Seems he doesn't blame China anymore, in fact he admires what they are doing. It's all the fault of past US presidents now.

Wasn't he going to talk to the Chinese President about Opiates and then the problem would be over? how did that go?

North Korea? was it even mentioned?

Trump always plays to the crowd he is currently in front of.
I bet he will get back to blaming China for everything the moment he gets back from the trip, possibly even earlier whilst in another country he is visiting.

They've really played him well, all that pomp and he's putty in their hands.

Yes, I completely misread the post. I saw "m***rity" and my brain filled it in as "majority".

I'll blame it on the full moon. :p

It happens, and I am sorry for piling on you when others had already corrected your error.

Though, correct me if I'm mistaken, I thought I saw a half-moon this morning.

Has any incumbent President won reelection when they never bothered to convert a single person that didn't vote for them in the first election?

Because I'm unaware of anyone that didn't vote for Trump that is now warming to the guy.

I'm not all that sure that your immediate circle is representive of the country as a whole. In fact, given your descriptions of that place, it sounds like one of the inner circles of hell.

The half truth trickle.....

WASHINGTON — After a business meeting before the Miss Universe Pageant in 2013, a Russian participant offered to "send five women" to Donald Trump's hotel room in Moscow, his longtime bodyguard told Congress this week, according to three sources who were present for the interview.

Two of the sources said the bodyguard, Keith Schiller, viewed the offer as a joke, and immediately responded, "We don't do that type of stuff."

 ;)

Later, I used an intermediary to pass some questions to active duty CIA officers dealing with the case file - they would not speak to me directly. I got a message back that there was "more than one tape", "audio and video", on "more than one date", in "more than one place" - in the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow and also in St Petersburg - and that the material was "of a sexual nature".

Is anyone, anywhere, aware of a single person who didn't vote Trump who now thinks he is doing a good job?

Anyone??? Please chime in.

Yeah, okay,I have to confess that I don't know anyone either. Fair enough.

I know better than to ask my brother or nephew, "Do you still support Trump?" They are going to say yes on general principal and get creative naming his so-called accomplishments. If they did have any doubt, I don't know how I could tease it out because their first instinct would be to dig in.

People have to get there on their own, as far as I can tell. Now if we can only manipulate them into doing that

You could always play the sarcasm/satire card.

Talk about how you've come around to being a Trump supporter yourself. "He's taught me so much! Before I though nazis were bad, but now I know they are fine people! And the amount of golfing he does? Think of all the jobs he creates for workers at the golf courses maintaining the carts!"

Maintaining multiple properties for his immediate family has been a full employment boon for the security staff.
Wait... that's also helping to bankrupt their budgets.

Ok... he's a jobs creator. 70 new positions at Mar-a-Lago alone.
Wait... those are specified temp visa immigrants.

I don't think I'm doing this right. :boggled:

Some nazis are fine people, just like some Mexican illegal immigrants are, I assume.

Let's not exaggerate Trump's nuanced positions.

You guys do have schools, right?

20% of Americans think the Sun revolves around the Earth.
40% think angels are real entities.
A similar percentage think heaven (and hell) are actual, real places.
78% of GOPers think Drumpf is doing a good job.

Feel free to draw your own conclusions.

Maybe you get a different result by asking if angels are "real entities," but normally three in four Americans report believing in the creatures.

Time to start up a "Chasing Angels" tv series documenting real investigations into this phenomenon. I will even borrow one of Rob Lowe's children if i have to.

Speaker stands by ban on Donald Trump addressing parliament

Donald Trump still has not earned the right to address the Houses of Parliament, the Speaker has said.

John Bercow controversially vetoed the idea of the US president speaking in parliament’s Westminster Hall, an honour which was given to his predecessor Barack Obama, shortly after Theresa May invited Trump to visit the UK.

A year on from Trump’s election victory, Bercow said his view remained that the US president did not deserve the honour of speaking to MPs and peers in the historic hall.

I forget which comedy show I was watching, perhaps a Last Leg from a few weeks ago, but there was discussion about what to call President Trump's visit bearing in mind it has already been downgraded from a State Visit.

IIRC the suggestion was "Citybreak".

Personally I'd rather he didn't come or if he must then I hope that May's cabinet doesn't fawn too much over him (though I expect Fox will be in full brown-nose mode :()
