I was raised Evangelical. It had the weird effect on me that by the time I was 12 or so, I was interpreting the Whore of Babylon in Revelations as being Evangelical rightwing Christianity.

Similar here. You know, there's a common Christian saying that "The Devil's greatest trick is convincing people he doesn't exist". I think that's BS.

Assuming Christianity is true, I'd say the Devil's greatest trick was convincing people to be intolerant, arrogant, and divisive in God's name.

God's greatest trick is convincing Christians he's the good guy.

ETA: Evangelicals believe God is behind Trump. Case in point.

This is an interesting turn of discussion. Because for years, I have always made the argument that, if I were Satan, the first thing I would do would be to convince everyone that I am God.

Na ja....

But back to the topic:

I was just looking up hog prices. After spending a year in the $70 - 75 range, they have now plunged to about $50. I bet the hog farmers are loving it, right?

Now, to be honest, and this is not going to sound nice, but I don't care. Despite the fact that my sister is married to a hog farmer. In one respect, I don't want my sister to have money problems, but then again, they voted for this clown, and were very vocal about it. I can't have a lot of sympathy if it comes back and costs them a ton.

This is usually the way it happens. Leftist **** everything up, then it’s up to responsible people to clean it up. Naturally Trump could just ignore it like Loser Obama did.

Donnie Johnny is playing one dimensional Go Fish against the Chinese in trade negotiations? Good luck, America. Last person out of Iowa please turn out the lights.

US importers are preparing their Christmas orders right now. They don't know where to turn. They can't bring in pajamas that they plan to sell for $12.95, if there's going to be a tariff of 20% on the $9.25 FOB price.

China, meanwhile, is chuckling up their sleeves. They can't find enough soy beans to replace their US imports, but the timing is awesome. Mr. Greenjeans is plowing the back forty about now. The US has no soybeans or corn or wheat to sell. So China will make a big deal, probably invite the BBC and CNN along to Brasilia as they shake hands and sign for "Largest Soybean Contract Ever From Brazil to China", and probably announce a billion dollars in factory investment.

It's harvest time and Brazil is reporting record yields. China can just sit on their order book for six months while Donnie's Red States all sweat bullets. They're probably not even going to answer the phone when US traders call.

Okay, I'll bite.

How does a fall in hog prices due to China's retaliation for Trump's self-proclaimed trade war equate to Republicans tidying up anything?

Lol

China’s largest customer does have a lot more leverage then your giving credit. I suppose we could just do what all leftists usually do....nothing.

Ok, I’ll bite back.

It’s just a bit more complicated then hog prices.

Cheaper bacon ?
Actually it may have the opposite effect.

China buys a lot of pork products, but they often buy the less-desired cuts of meat (ears, feet, etc.) With the drop in demand from china, overall production may fall, which means that cuts of meat that North Americans eat (such as bacon) will go up.

I'm no economist, but I'm sure that one thing that's beneficial to markets is instability, uncertainty, and rapid change. These things make investors feel confident, and keep the money flowing. Right?

They do play the long game, don't they? Though 6 months isn't that long, Trump doesn't have the strategical skills to think 6 months in advance. U.S. bureaucrats (aka intelligence, Deep State, economists, military brass etc.) do have those skills, but good luck getting Trump to listen. Xi has power Trump can only dream of (wetly) and China will go any source to get what China needs.

I need to put together a 7-week-long English class in 3 hours and was reading Orwell. It dawned on me that one thing Trump uses to great advantage is that he's not pretentious. A lying sack of canine dung, but not pretentious. While we lament the coarseness of public discourse, there is an upside.

I wonder if Trump is aware of how the stock market can be manipulated with tweets. Amazon goes down on the day of the tweet, but recovers the next day when Trump's tweet has been fact-checked. A little bit of instability is probably good for some shrewd operators.

Well, look at the bright side....

This could officially be the last FULL year of the Trump presidency, as he'll likely spend much of 2019 and 2020 campaigning for re-election.

high risk/reward prediction: in case the Dems get a majority in Congress, Trump will re-awaken his inner Democrat and work with them as long as they pretend to give him credit.

You are assuming he is capable/competent enough to do so.

Keep in mind that he's been belittling the democrats for over the past year. With a very slim majority and upcoming mid terms (and the chance of the democrats taking at least the house, if not the senate), the wise decision would have been to try making peace months ago.

Furthermore, Trump can't even get along with the republicans, with whom he shares a common urge to engage in racism and to harm poor people. What makes you think that the Democrats will be any more accommodating?

I am now convinced that America under Trump is headed for disaster, only question is how bad it will be.
Disaster is inevitable when you have a semi literate president who accepts Television as his reality in charge.
