Nothing stupid about rigging polls during a campaign: Trump needed to look like a credible contender for President, someone that Republican backers could believe might win, given sufficient support. Also, voters are herd animals: if they think Trump is popular, they will find reasons to believe he is popular.
Also, it's a good way to stay in the media spotlight.

They also...

* widened his shoulders
* added hair to the top of his head
* shortened the hair on his collar
* Lowered the waistline of his trousers making his tie seem a better length, and also improving his waistline
* They altered the top if the tie to make it tighter to his neck, and the bottom again to alter the fit/length
* They pulled the edge of his jacket in and pulled the sleeve up under his arm to make him look thinner
* They altered his trouser cuffs, because they weren't sitting neatly?

So basically they tried to make him look more manly.

More like they tried to make him look like he was wearing a decent suit that fits and not a potato sack.

“In 2018 alone, 20,000 illegal aliens with criminal records were apprehended trying to cross the Border, and there was a 122% increase in fentanyl being smuggled between ports of entry. Last month alone, more than 20,000 minors were smuggled into the U.S.” @seanhannity

That seems to be the only significant change.

Apart from pulling his pants up... :boggled:

Let's see... pointedly whiter, thinner all over, "fixed" clothes, broader shoulders, one hand grew and longer pointer fingers on both, the top of the pants went down a bit and the crotch went up, hair tweaks - color and shape, logo behind him edited a little...

ETA: I missed the tie tightening. Kudos to PhantomWolf.

Trump opened a can of worms when he blocked Pelosi's trip:

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article224730305.html

In Trump's shutdown, there is no money for members of Congress to visit NATO and the troops, but there is money to fly the First Lady to West Palm on Air Force One.

Thankfully, despite the relentless onslaught unleashed by Donnie against our free press, we still have one. From the Miami Herald link above:
On Thursday, a day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told President Donald Trump he should delay his State of the Union speech amid the government shutdown, the president grounded the military aircraft that Pelosi and a Congressional delegation were to use to visit American troops in Afghanistan. Trump, also citing the government shutdown, emphasized that taking a trip while 800,000 federal workers weren’t getting paid is “totally inappropriate,” he wrote to Pelosi in a letter. Those rules, however, didn’t apply to his wife, first lady Melania Trump, reports say.

Melania Trump departed Andrews on Air Force One about 4:30 PM yesterday, and was flown to Palm Beach International Airport. The Palm Beach Post has confirmed AF1 was on the tarmac there.

CNN is just plotzing themselves over the Buzzfeed report. Great, if true, but it has not been independently corroborated yet. Two directions this can go - one really bad for CNN and Buzzfeed (or whoever else is reporting it), the other, really bad for The PDJT.

This wasn't a conscious decision, but I find it hard to write or utter the words, "President Trump." Those words seem like they belong in a cartoon, somehow.

As I've said before, every time I hear those words together it feels like a glitch in the Matrix. We're in the wrong Universe.

A single tweet from Trump is more densely packed with pieces for analysis than Finnegan's wake.

//slight hijack// I hate those moments when places like Buzzfeed or TMZ actually break legit, real world news because A) we all have to briefly pretend like Buzzfeed and TMZ are relevant but more importantly B) it encourages their "Report everything, fact check nothing" way of reporting.

I have a feeling a lot of fentanyl is coming by mail. Even worse, carfentanil, which can kill you upon contact with the skin.

Trump shouldn't mind though. It's only killing addicts.

It's amusing to me that TBD is prepared to throw your whole country down a hole just to score points in some childish game of gotcha that no one else is playing

It's deeply concerning that your president has the same attitude.

Pelosi was, unfortunately for her and her public relations tour: Our President, ENDED IT.

Tightened up his neck, and shrank down his jowls as well.

Agreed. I wish they'd make it a video montage of Trump and Trump critics, each section with 25 words or less introduction:

Here's why President Trump's bluster about the wall can't be taken seriously.

I will build a great great wall on our southern border and I'll have Mexico pay for that wall.

Nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively

Let’s say it costs $4 or $5 billion

You mean to tell me I can’t take $7 billion and build a wall?

The wall is probably $8 billion

The $20 billion dollar wall is peanuts

They say the wall is going to cost $40 billion

President Trump and Senate Leader McConnell are incapable of negotiating in good faith.

Later this morning, we’ll introduce a continuing resolution that will ensure continuous funding for the federal government. The measure will provide the resources necessary to continue normal operations through February 8. [McConnell]

I am proud to shutdown the government. [Trump]

We call on Mitch McConnell and the senate Republicans to stand up and perform their duty.

Trump may be setting the US on the path to World War III. [Corker]

I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression. This is shameful. [Flake]

Meanwhile honest, working Americans suffer.

[montage of closed Government facilities, suffering victims]

Etc. There's a veritable cornucopia of clips to choose from.

They should hire you. Good pitch, there.

My foreign policy is libertarian. Foreign policy should be determined by the free market.

Libertarianism is an inconsistent ideology.

IIRCR, there were plenty of Clinton ads in 2106 simple spelling out questionable things he'd said or done.

Leaving aside that Hillary won't be alive in 2106, probably, it won't be an election year!

I remember reports of prayer rugs found at least 10 years ago.

A lot of ranchers/farmers do not want a wall. I wonder if this might affect Cruz's conduct in the Senate.

It absolutely is a problem, though not as big as it used to be, that illegal immigrants take a toll on ranchers' property. Also drug smugglers. Yet I've heard many say that comprehensive reform is vital to address this problem. Many illegal immigrants litter, but the cartel folks have firefights.

It's no accident that McCain, Cornyn and GW Bush were pushing comprehensive reform that would allow seasonal permits to farmworkers. Jon Kyl, a much more conventional GOP senator from Arizona, reintroduced reform after McCain's bill failed (actually IIRC it passed the Senate). Arnold Schwarzenegger said long ago, "I trust McCain on immigration." People who understand the terrain - that is, politicians in border states - are much less gung-ho about a wall. Republican politicians. It makes me wonder if there's enough crossover potential to veto-proof a spending bill that would add a bit for border security but no dedicated wall funding (still allowing DHS officials to upgrade physical barriers). I do think it might be good to have a very modest fence, just so everyone knows where the line is.

Border agents in the past have said they need roads more than they do fences. Of course, there's going to have to be a lot of road-building just to build a fence. More eminent domain issues.

I like this: More money to DHS, with the proviso that security experts will determine how to use it.

Could Mitch McConnell be closing the Senate to thwart such a compromise? Or even enable it (though that's much less likely).

A girlfriend's grandson is trying to re-enlist in the Army ... and says he can't due to the shutdown. (I'm not sure he's telling the truth, though).

Sorry if this is the wrong thread. But while I'm at it: The government reports that thousands more children were taken from parents than previously reported. Border concentration camps. Brilliant.

"Uh oh! If I want to be consistent with what I said earlier I have to agree here. Damn! What do I do? Retract my silly principle or double down? Why am I even asking?"

I have posts as far back as 2015 saying I oppose US intervention in WW2. I can link you to one You are demonstrating lack of capability in assessing someone's consistency.

On last night's episode of "Gotham", Penguin has a hand-picked choir following him around, singing a song about how wonderful he was, which he presumably wrote himself. I immediately thought that I could easily see the same thing happening in the White House at some point.

The United States Congress is a co-equal branch of government in our system of checks and balances. The Congress has a constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight in the war zone where our men and women in uniform are risking their lives every day.

After President Trump revoked the use of military aircraft to travel to Afghanistan, the delegation was prepared to fly commercially to proceed with this vital trip to meet with our commanders and troops on the front lines.

In the middle of the night, State Dept's Diplomatic Security Service provided an updated threat assessment detailing that the President announcing this sensitive travel had significantly increased danger to the delegation & to troops, security, & other officials supporting trip.

This morning, we learned that the Administration had leaked the commercial travel plans as well.

In light of the grave threats caused by the President’s action, the delegation has decided to postpone the trip so as not to further endanger our troops and security personnel, or the other travelers on the flights.

Whether here or abroad, the Speaker always thanks our troops, diplomats and intelligence community for their heroism & service. The Speaker commends her colleagues on the delegation, who personally & officially have dedicated their lives to protect & defend the American people.

The millennial renting at my house wondered if he'd have to pay taxes if the government was still shut down.

Endangering the lives of Congressmen and US troops by providing intelligence to enemy forces. How many more times does he have to demonstrate his disloyalty to the country before the GOP stops kissing his feet?

They won't. To do so would show weakness (in their eyes). As long as it upsets the dems, they're ok with it. 'Ell oh ell! The President has set himself up as dictator for life! Look at how upset the libtards are!'

But it was for a good cause - he needed to retaliate against Pelosi for her suggesting he not give the SotU address.

And, in response to the criticism that they shouldn't go when the government is shut down, Pelosi's response SHOULD be, "The House has passed multiple bills to reopen the government, and we are currently waiting for the Senate to act upon them."

The president is merely the requirements and powers contained in the Constitution. Any other way of categorizing the relationship is an act of narrative construction.

Unfortunately, Trump agrees with you.
Politicians should have a more nuanced understanding of political theory.

An echo of the ostriches known as Fox News, the apple pie version of Baghdad Bob.

On a morning when the explosive allegations that Trump suborned perjury are dominating "real" news, Fox, like you, is all giddy about Trump's infantile machinations re Pelosi. And they're all worked up about AOC of course.

Which really shows what the Trump base is really interested about (pissing off liberals) and what it really fears (anyone who looks like a foreigner or a minority, especially women).

If you live in the US he's still your president whether you like it or not.

I don't have a connection to the president simply because I'm a citizen. I don't do something at his behest. This is like trying to say the local sports team is my team.

Directing Cohen to lie to Congress seems important. It might be equally important to determine that those in the Senate -- uh, Congress -- voting to lift Russia sanctions are part of the same white supremacy cabal. Notice their lack of any action, in fact, obstruction, with respect to Russia cyber attacks? Arms down by their sides as current and former intelligence officials sound one alarm after another? There you go, pal, some cake for the lazy thinkers. Lollipop? It'll help with the sobbing.
HUH?? I was complaining about the thread having substantially detoured into food talk. Obviously the allegations that Trump directed Cohen to lie are important.
