I'm sending a box of respirator masks to arthwollipot tomorrow. Since it will cost less for him to mail them on once they get there, send him a PM if you want him to forward a mask to you. I don't know how far they can be spread, so first come/worst air first served.

I have a long PM on how to use them so if you get any masks be sure to ask me to send you the same PM. A few things matter that may not be intuitive.

Sorry I didn't think to send them sooner. They're supposed to take 6-10 days to get there.

Just a little under a year ago my wife and I took a tour in Australia, part of which was on Kangaroo Island. We stayed in the very ritzy Southern Ocean Lodge.

southern ocean lodge.jpg

I got an email today from the parent company. The whole place burned to the ground.

It was already very hot and dry there that year. While we were there, we went walking one night, to see what kind of night time animals might show up. We met a thirsty wallaby, trying to get a few drops from the water system.

A little way away, we went to a national park, where we were introduced to a bunch of sleeping koalas. From what I read, I think the park burned too.

I saw a video of burning woods, and I'm pretty sure it was the edge of this field that was burning.

damn.

There are 16 masks in the box: 8 N95s and 8 N100s (I think). That's all I could get in and keep it under 2 pounds.

I do hope they don't charge you an import tax, I said gift on the box. This should go in the politics section but I only have one comment: I have filled out these international mailing forms many times in the past. I do not recall ever having to check a bunch of boxes about tariffs in specific countries.

Our family friend lost his house and his belongings at Bateman's Bay.

And I just remembered... many years ago he used to be the Federal Member for Canberra.

We had lunch in the member's dining room at old Parliament House.

We visited his office, and that was where I first saw a photocopier.

Looks like it's going to be very, very bad for Victoria and a few other places, but here in Canberra we're looking at AQIs below 50 all day Friday and Saturday. So that's nice.

We're meant to get up to 6 mm of rain around the middle of the day tomorrow.

But it's about 37C now.

The weather down here mostly moves towards the east.

So, yes, far East Victoria where the big fires are will be warm for quite a while.

A water bombing helicopter has ditched into a dam near Eden on the NSW South Coast. The pilot escaped and has no serious injuries. The helicopter remains submerged.

Bought some R2 masks today at the chemist located on the corner of Northbourne Ave and Alinga Street. They have plenty.

Yeah, my parents picked some up at their local too. They seem to be shipping them in pretty quickly now, but they're also going fast.

I can't find anything about R2 masks. Did you mean P2?

I'm glad they have the masks available in some places.

We had intermittent shortages here when safety regulations required everyone to have them incase we had to take care of TB patients. It took a while for supply to catch up with demand.

If you find masks by tomorrow, I haven't mailed these yet. I want them to go to Australia regardless. But I want to send them to areas that still have shortages of masks.

Send them anyway. I'll forward them on to an affected area if we don't need them. It's possible that when I go there tomorrow morning they'll all be gone.

Perhaps they are referring to RZ masks, which are popular with woodworkers and trendy urban cyclists. Expensive at $40 or so each - I have no idea whether they are effective for pollution (marketed to urban cyclists) or smoke (marketing to fire victims). Saw dust (which is what these masks are really for) is quite a different airborne particulate size to bushfire or diesel smoke.

That's crap because who can just stay indoors for weeks at a time? But it makes sense if there is a shortage and you are discouraging people from using them.

Quote:
This is the small supply of P2/N95 masks provided by the Commonwealth Government for the ACT.

The groups of particularly sensitive individuals who will be able to access these masks, if they choose, include:

people with existing chronic lung and heart conditions, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, and heart disease
all pregnant women, and
people over 65 years of age.
Rather than saying people shouldn't bother they should just say there's a shortage, these folks should have priority.

It is correct, they need to be used correctly. That's why I PMed you a page of instructions.

The 8 N95s were all I had. I do have a half dozen more N100s. N100s should be used when people are in the thick of the smoke or doing short term heavy work. The masks are only a health issue for people that have chronic respiratory issues where restricted air flow is an issue. But those same people certainly shouldn't be breathing smoke-filled air. The problem with N100s as I was telling arthwollipot is simply that they are hard to tolerate for long periods of time. They get hot and uncomfortable.

Adding a hot sweaty mask to 40C temp must be especially difficult. If it were me, I would put up with the mask.

Wow. I've been concentrating so much on Victoria that I didn't realise that the Southern Ocean Lodge was lost. It was spectacular.

No worries, I've just been researching the subject because I've sent N masks and needed to know the equivalent.

Finally, a map that makes it clear what's burning.

My sympathy for everyone affected by the fires just keeps on going up.

This morning, I woke up at 5.00 am with severe anxiety.

The smell of smoke was so strong, I thought my home was on fire.

I went outside and saw a pall of smoke standing over everything.

Still no where near as bad as the smoke elsewhere, but bad enough that I'm not walking the dogs this morning (unless it clears).

Here's today's weather forecast, so I'm hoping that Kangaroo Island gets some relief...

Quote:
Adelaide area

Max 21
Morning smoke. Rain clearing later.

Cloudy. Areas of smoke haze this morning. High (70%) chance of rain developing during the morning, then clearing around mid afternoon. Winds westerly 20 to 30 km/h turning southwesterly 25 to 40 km/h in the morning then decreasing to 20 to 25 km/h in the late evening.
39.8 maximum yesterday, it's funny that today's forecast maximum is showing as 21, it's currently 25.4.

I have to agree with Skeptic Ginger though, wearing a mask in the heat is better than being unable to breathe.

Here's a possibly friendlier copy of the fire spread prediction for today:

For scale, the distance from Canberra to Cooma on this map is about 125km (about 77 and a half miles). It will vary depending on where in Canberra you start from. This map addresses only NSW though - there are still fires burning in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

I got myself a basic P2 mask from the chemist on the way home last night. I don't need it right now - my AQI is 44 right now - but it feels better to have it there just in case.

Say what you like, but Tony Abbott has been fighting the fires in the Snowy Mountains.

Quote:
“I’m one of 70,000 RFS volunteers — let’s hope all of us stay safe and do good work,” Mr Abbott told reporters on Friday.

Your N95s and N100s are on their way. Be sure to mail some of them on further if any other forumites ask. Donating them to any fire fighters that don't have enough would be fine too.

This page has some pretty scary animations based on NASA hotspot data. It's just been updated too.

Again, it doesn't cover SA or WA, which is a shame.

It's mind boggling. The fires spread for a couple months then literally explode into big swaths of land.

Pouring in Melbourne now and the radar shows a wide band starting to hit Gippsland. Authorities are saying it won’t make much difference, but they are always, and understandably, pessimistic. I’m certain this rain will help.

Rain does not always help. If they want to do some backburning then this is stopped by rain. And if there is only a little rain then the fires are not impacted.

Kangaroo Island has finally caught a break.

The rain yesterday helped a lot.
