A Florida man attacked his daughter and her teen sister with a machete, police say

CNN said:
A South Florida man is in police custody after he attacked and severely injured his 10-year-old daughter and her teenage sister with a machete, police said.

Dennis Reid, 47, on Friday cut the girls with a machete at a home in Lauderhill after arriving there earlier in the morning to care for them, Lauderhill police Lt. Mike Santiago told CNN.

Police were called to the home around 10 a.m. when a frantic 911 caller said "there was an individual chopping up females," Santiago said separately to reporters at a news conference.

When officers arrived, Reid had fled, and police saw the girls had cuts to their upper extremities, including to the head and neck, Santiago told CNN. The girls were taken to a hospital in serious condition, and they underwent surgery Friday afternoon, according to Santiago.

Reid turned himself in to police a short time after fleeing, Santiago said...

And thank you for not using quotation mark around chopping up females, which would have completely ruined the thread title.

Good to see a move away from guns, although I'm not sure if machetes are up, down, or to the side from guns.

The 911 caller reported an "individual chopping up females". Odd word choice. Wish these callers would pay a little more attention to eloquence. Maybe keep a thesaurus, pencil and notebook by the phone.

Oh, and Sunshine Laws. This happens your state too. Reporters just forget.

Thank you for making the very important point that he's African-American.

Just as a side note, the term "African-American" is pretty much going out of fashion as a way to describe American black people, because with the increased rates of immigration to the US from African countries, it becomes rather confusing, as it's unclear if "African-American" refers to actual immigrants from Africa, or to black people whose ancestors have been in America for generations.

Yyyyyes, but isn't that just posting an image of the perp? Or should we refrain when they're black? I don't get it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think the position is more that we generally don't see a lot of pictures of the perps in threads at ISF. Which is something I'd agree with. Sometimes they're posted, but most of the time it's just a link to the news piece, so I believe it's being perceived as putting in more effort\time to get this guys face shown here.

I don't agree or disagree, just giving my perception. Personally, if you go around hacking young women your face should be plastered everywhere. Though I can also agree it's slightly out of the norm to see.

Sorry, I'll use the N-word instead.

Man, you rocked that false dichotomy like it was a pair of Zubaz in the early 90's. BAM!

There are a myriad of options other than African American or 'the n-word'. It always seemed logically odd to me that we call them African American but I see people of color in several other countries. Almost like they aren't only from Africa at all.
