From Daily Kos:
Quote:
Kyle Chapman, 46,...first made a name for himself at a “March 4 Trump” in Berkeley on March 4, 2017, by coming to the event prepared for battle with homemade implements: a shield adorned with an American flag, football-style padding and a helmet, and a long wooden sign post he wielded like a baseball bat. A video of Chapman breaking the post over the head of an antifascist protester that day went viral and gave birth to his nickname. Chapman was charged with multiple counts of felony assault, which he eventually plea-bargained down to a single charge and five years’ probation.

Chapman wound up facing multiple charges arising from a variety of violent incidents: for hitting a Texas man over the head with a barstool...Chapman entered a plea agreement in the Texas case, admitting guilt to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which in Texas is a second-degree felony. The judge in return gave him three years of “deferred adjudication,” meaning that if he commits any further offenses, he can be returned to Texas with a sentence of up to 20 years behind bars. Daily Kos link
Don't hold your breathe.

Quote:
At his arraignment on Wednesday, Chapman told Judge Kibodeuax that his violent past was behind him, and that “I’m not that person anymore.”
His "violent past" is behind him? He's not that person "anymore?" He's talking about something that happened in November.

Variant Proportions

Eye popping. In just a month Omicron has almost completely overwhelmed Delta.

COVID-19 Projections

Well, good news of a sort. Omicron will peak around the first week February
and nearly be gone around April.

Looking a lot like a scam test service was operating nationwide

Some are claiming they got false negatives, others get no results at all. Multiple reports of people receiving test results before testing.

Quote:
COVID-19 testing sites under investigation after complaints allege 'fake tests'

...

In Oregon, one family raised a red flag about a testing site in the Portland area. They told KOIN-TV that the whole experience "seemed a bit sketchy." They said they were told to put their PCR tests into a bin that resembled a garbage bin. Their tests came back negative except for one that never returned a result. To be safe, they were tested again and found out that they were positive.

Another family in Florida told WINK-TV that they received their test results will still waiting in line to be tested.

Quote:
The Oregon Department of Justice and the Better Business Bureau have launched investigations into an Illinois-based company that runs coronavirus testing sites across the nation.

The Oregon agency opened a civil investigation into the Center for COVID Control this week on suspicion of Unfair Trade Practices Act violations, spokeswoman Kristina Edmunson said.

The company operates testing sites across the nation – some of them "pop-ups" run out of sheds and mobile storage units. Many Americans have rushed to the sites amid a surge of COVID-19 cases driven by the omicron variant and a national shortage of tests. But dozens of people nationwide have reached out to USA TODAY expressing concerns about the company.

Unclear is this is an outright scam or total incompetence.

To give you an idea of the caliber of individual Massie (R-Ky) is, below is a quote from a Louisville Ky Courier-Journal news story from August 2021. Massie was a featured speaker at the Kentucky Freedom Rally:

Quote:
Massie slammed mask and vaccine requirements Saturday and promoted how he recently proposed legislation that would prohibit mandating vaccines for the military and also flouted the House of Representatives' mask rules, earning a $500 fine over which he's suing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "We will take it to the Supreme Court if we have to," he said of that lawsuit.

In recent months, Massie has inaccurately claimed masks are ineffective and has questioned the COVID-19 vaccines' efficacy and necessity, despite medical and public health professionals' consensus that the vaccines remain safe and effective, especially at preventing hospitalization and death. He made similar statements at Saturday's rally, referring to masks derisively at one point as "face diapers." Courier-Journal link

You may remember Massie from his recent Christmas card.

In the guardian:

Quote:
The Biden administration has failed its Covid test

Instead, the administration said that 150 million Americans – less than half of the country – could be reimbursed for tests if they had insurance, if they fronted the money, if they could wait to be reimbursed, and if they didn’t buy them until mid-January. Tests purchased before the holidays would be ineligible for reimbursement. Meanwhile, tests were impossible to find in huge swathes of the country – or required standing in lines so long that they were only accessible to those who could afford what amounted to a tax on people’s time.

It was a plan that was so complicated, so limited, so inadequate, and so fundamentally wrong-headed that it exemplified everything that has gone wrong with the Biden administration’s response to the coronavirus to date.

A mantra of successful health campaigns is “make the healthy choice the easy choice”. But the Biden administration has been intent on making matters that should be easy difficult, prioritizing rules and regulations over results, deferring to private industry in matters of state responsibility, burdening individuals already at their breaking points, adding cumbersome barriers of time and logistics, being too slow, and displaying too much contempt and too little urgency in responding to cries for help.

Well dammit! I’ve been wrong all these years. I’ve been vaccinated, so ipso facto I can’t be white. Should I start checking the “other” box on all those forms now?

Donald Trump knowns the GOP well. You cannot go too far wrong pouring petrol on the flames of racial intolerance.

Health system in my state continues to buckle to uncontrolled spread of omicron.

Quote:
The state’s largest health care system, Mass General Brigham, starting Monday, will be slashing thousands of surgeries it performs each week as it strains to stay ahead of the tsunami of patients pouring into its hospitals.

And on Thursday, UMass Memorial Medical Center, the largest health system in Central Massachusetts, suspended all surgeries and medical procedures for conditions not considered life-threatening until further notice.

The situation is so bad that it’s forcing hospital administrators to make heartbreaking choices to limit all but the most urgent surgeries and procedures. This extends even to some cancer surgeries, forcing doctors to weigh which tumors are growing faster and which slow enough to postpone care.

Dr. Ron Walls, Mass General Brigham’s chief operating officer, said hospitals are now fielding calls from patients “begging” to be put back on the list for surgery.

US inmates sue jail over ivermectin treatment for Covid as ‘medical experimentation’
The lawsuit alleges that the jail physician told the four men that the prescribed drugs were ‘mere vitamins, antibiotics and/or steroids’

The Arkansas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit on behalf of the men last week against Washington county jail, the Washington county sheriff, Tim Helder, and jail physician Dr Robert Karas. Last August, Helder revealed that the drug had been prescribed to patients with Covid-19.

“The lawsuit charges the defendants for administering ivermectin to incarcerated individuals without prior informed consent as to the nature, contents, or potential side effects of the drug,” the ACLU said in a statement last week.

It's limited per address. Reports of people in apartments being unable to get theirs because it has been claimed by other people with the same street address, but different apartment number. A solution offered is to include your apt # in the first address line.

4 per address seems an odd choice. For people with roommates or families with children, it is likely inadequate.

I'm watching the TV show House online. And one of the Doctors is trying to get consent from the parents for a medical procedure on their son.

He begins to explain and then stops mid-sentence. He then says to them that there is no way they can make an informed decision as they are unlikely to understand well enough.

I don't understand why people are second guessing the medical professionals.

The form has a separate field to enter the apartment number. I suspect the USPS knows how to deliver to apartment buildings.

They also have provided an easy-to-remember entry web site:
https://www.covidtests.gov/

I wonder if this is just the starting point. Maybe they'll allow people to reorder once a month or something.

I also wonder how long it will be before scammers create similar .com web sites that will offer tests "for only a small handling fee." Government web addresses always end in .gov.

This complaint is quite numerous. It's not that USPS can't deliver, it's that the automated form seems to have an error that it will reject multiple submissions with the same 1st address line, such as apartment buildings.

Quote:
Here’s what the USPS says to do if you’re receiving error messages or having trouble claiming your COVID test kits.

“At-home COVID-19 tests have already been ordered for this address“
Some people who live in apartments, duplexes, co-ops or at other addresses that house multiple families ran into an error message Tuesday on the USPS site that reads: “At-home COVID-19 tests have already been ordered for this address.”

Because the program is currently limited to one order of four tests per residential address, some people may not be able to receive their free allotment.

...

This error has been popping up for some people who live in apartments, condos, or other multi-unit addresses. This could also be an issue of simply typing in your address slightly wrong. For example, you may need to type “Apt. 1” instead of “#1.”
Complaints of little problems like this resulting in a rejection are not uncommon.

https://www.kxan.com/news/coronaviru...e-doing-wrong/

Hopefully this gets fixed shortly.

The USPS has been using USPS.COM pretty much since the web began.

I guess some credit should be given for Psaki's "let them eat cake" attitude to the idea of just mailing everyone a test. The angry backlash to her blasé attitude seems to have moved the needle a bit.

This is great. It's easy, everyone who wants a test can get it, and despite any minor speedbumps this is going to be a million times easier than dealing with tedious insurance reimbursements or smashing f5 on the CVS website trying to score a test.

It's anathema that this country's government could actually just do good things directly rather than farming it out to a bunch of private market middlemen, but here we are. Better late than never.
