Can the Dems retain the House Speaker??!

No, he's now losing votes to Jordan.

The progression of this was almost amusing. Jordan got a handful of votes in the first ballot, and then gave a rather emphatic speech in the interim exhorting his fellow Republicans to rally behind McCarthy. And oddly in the second round this resulted in more votes...for Jordan.

I say almost amusing because this is actually a nightmare in slow motion.

Hey, relax. Any and all republican'ts who don't win can cry fraud.

F'rinstance: Who actually hired that clerk? Was he vetted? How bout his wife? I wanna see his laptop. His DNA. Take back the steal!

McCarthy losing the Speakership would be hilarious, and appropriate given how that little **** has covered for Trump, but so unlikely.

I now regret my previous statement. I have no idea how this ends with McCarthy wining. It would require right-wing nutjobs agreeing that maybe things would just be better if they went along with the crowd and there is no way right-wing nutjobs are going to do that.

Maybe George Santos can declare himself to be the winner.

He's already got "Speaker of the House" on his resume. It was just an embellishment. But if you ask him about it, he will clarify that he is just "Speaker-ish"

You've got it backwards. The "crowd" in question has a history of going along with the right-wing nutjobs.

And I'm guessing that they're about to do it again.

More like a **** show in slow motion. The vote is slow and tedious, but it makes good television. If this goes past 9 ballots, I'll throw my hat in the ring!

I thought I heard Santos say that he was Speaker during Nixon's third term?

While that would be hilarious, I don't think 10 of those nutjobs are quite that dumb... but I would sure enjoy it if I was to be wrong.

Absolutely hilarious. The record number of ballots is 133, back in the early 1800's. Even more hilarity if 8t goes that sort of distance.

More likely the GQP second choice will get it.

Now taking wagers for how many rounds this will go. 2-1 on more than the record of nine. 4-1 into February. I will accept your bets on PayPal and distribute them accordingly at the end.

Seriously, what a **** show. Hope all the reps have their NoDoz handy.

No. The only time a Democrat should vote for an R is to permanently disbar them from any office.

I do believe, that eventually, if no speaker is elected, the US goes into default and the world will enter a great depression. Hopefully there are 19 dems that will compromise rather than see the world burn.

Liz Cheney as speaker would be kinda hilarious.

ETA: and no, the speaker does not have to be a current member of congress.

20. After the third round of voting, 20 Republicans voted for Jordan rather than McCarthy.

I mean, part of me still finds it hilarious, but this is really getting ...sad.

As the tories found out over the last couple of years, a party uninterested in governing quickly becomes ungovernable.

As opposed to making McCarthy the speaker, him giving in to the extremists and "freedom caucus", and the next time a spending or borrowing bill comes up, it gets rejected by the republicans (gotta keep those right wingers happy), causing the economy to crash anyways.

I think I need to change out my T-bills for... Jesus I dunno what do they issue in Europe

ETA: or like I said, a Liz Cheney as speaker. Now then, if the dems go along, can they find 10 or so reasonably minded Republicans... are there 10 of them?

Adjourned for the day. Why do I have a feeling this will be resolved with closed-door arm-wrestling contests?

Liz Cheney wouldn't get enough support from the Republicans because she dared to take part in the Jan 6 witch hunt.

Have the R's offered any compromises to the Dems?

So, reading this:

https://www.crfb.org/blogs/appropriations-watch-fy-2023

It looks like we've got a full year for the GoP to play silly games and do absolutely nothing before the **** really hits the fan. If it gets to December and the GoP STILL hasn't selected a speaker then it would be time for the Dems to compromise.

Expecting the currently divided Congress in this era of absolute refusal to compromise... well the compromise would be the GoP showing the American people how petty and silly they are. It'd be a huge win by the Dems to show they won't play politics over a looming shutdown and default by working with as few as 4 Republicans.

It won't come to that. The first thing that the House does when it gathers is select the Speaker of the House. And I mean first thing. Nothing else happens until that happens. No committee assignments, no swearing in of Representatives, no ridiculous show trials of investigation/smears, and certainly nothing as sexy as an Impeachment.

Just vote after vote after vote for Speaker of the House. Even the MAGA caucus knows that is terrible television...

I have a "bingo card" of unlikely events I have been updating every month around the election. One I added for January was that the Democrats help elect McCarthy to the speaker's chair.

If it comes down to say, Jordan or McCarthy, this could happen. Probably won't. But at some point they all need to get on with the business at hand. It would also make McCarthy an even weaker Speaker than if the republicans get their act together.

But weirdly, the non-sworn in members-elect apparently get to vote on the speaker.
They should all just vote for me. I promise to show up and wield the gavel every day, unless I don't feel like it.
The longer this goes on, the better I'll like it. Especially if Trump decides to get involved. A lot of Republicans aren't going to get much sleep tonight.

I was surprised they were allowed to adjourn. I thought they couldn't even do that?

No, they don't.

Sounds like I'm hearing that if the Repubs can drag this Speaker thing out long enough, they can keep getting paid for doing nothing?
