BBC Programme to show acupuncture deactivates brain

That's not the definition of a skeptic. Not the modern definition (as opposed to the original meaning). A skeptic is someone who asserts something cannot possibly exist and who will only start to believe when the evidence is overwhelming.

Where do you find this modern definition? Is it just your definition? Did you find it in E.Britannica or what do you actually mean by that?

I for one do claim to be a skeptic but I do not claim to be what you claim me to be.

If that is indeed the case then that's fine. There is, however, just one very slight problem.

Not only do I invariably not agree that there is overwhelming evidence for their views, but quite often it seems to me there is no evidence at all to supposrt their views!

Clearly never died? How is it clear that they did not die??

Maybe I misunderstood something, but wouldnt "talking about it afterwards" disqualify someone from being dead?

The alternative options to a conspiracy theory would be that..... they only had one camera crew allowed in the theatre?

Not seeing a camera crew in a documentary does not invalidate the recording. I have no reason to not believe that orca beach themselves deliverately to take seals, merely because there was no shot of the camera crew on the beach as well.

Oh, can I ask why you're dredging up a year old thread, especially as you are asking questions of a poster who has since been banned (Ian) and cannot reply to you?

The series was shown here in sweden just recently. I will not post any more messages to Ian...

I still think the photographing was weird... but you are right in your conclusions.

Ah - that would explain it. Fair enough.
I will not post any more messages to Ian...
I tried not to when he WAS here! ;)

I can understand your initial misgivings. I found that the editing looked to be biased towards wooism rather than medicine. As has been pointed out in this thread, open-heart surgury without general anasthesia is not without precedence.

The insistence in this programme that the pain control was *solely* due to acupuncture is merely "smoke and mirrors".

Remember that the patient had been sedated. Quote from the show,
"Although sedated by drugs, and her chest numbed..."

The editing (as you say, the photographing) was sensationalist and biased due to the presenter's credulousness.

OK, OK, I can take a hint. I need to be on my other computer to fix the geriatric avatar and access the PMs and so on though.

I got the keys to my new house a week ago, though I haven't moved in yet, so it's all go. The trouble is, do I have a spare couple of days to type the length of post to bring you all up to date? Not this weekend!

(I've been lurking for a little while, and only the fact that I was trying the wrong password prevented me from butting in here yesterday, but today I tried a different password, and I can't resist flattery....)

Rolfe.

You have no idea who I am, Rolfe, but I am pleased to see you back. I've learned enormously from your postings over the years.

Yay Rolfe!

Hope the past year has been productive. Glad to see you here and in good health and all.

Delighted to see you back, Rolfe!

Please feel flattered when I tell you that I have now and then checked for new posts from your hand: that is how much you have been missed!

Update:

One week ago I mailed one of the scientists involved in the MRI-study and asked about the results that according to him would soon be published.

I have still not gotten any reply.

keep you updated.
