Coronasmitta bland svenska EM-supportrar – marschen inställd (Sportsbladet.se, June 23, 2021)
Corona infection among Swedish soccer fans in Moscow - the march to the stadion cancelled

Two cases out of 2,000 fans aren't many, but it doesn't take more than one to spread the infection. The article doesn't say how many of them got tested.

Finland lets 100s return from #EURO2020 in Russia without testing because the border was overwhelmed. Finland has among the lowest case rates in Europe though restrictions, vax, discipline. This unforced error, with Delta at large, could be a disaster.

Yes, we have been having sweltering weather 31°C here - some nice fresh thunderstorms now - and East Finland hit almost 34°C yesterday, so as the queues at the border were three hours for those returning after the Russia game and they were running short of tests, they just let the cars and coaches through, telling people they needed to isolate for three days and arrange a test locally. Finns generally tend to do as they are told. Most would have been jabbed/tested before they went. The local sports journalist, Harri Ahola believes few Russians are vaccinated.

ETA SW Finland is reporting there have been no hospitalisations in the region fromCovid19 for a week, and none for two weeks of over-70's.

In Southwest Finland , an average of 10 infections are diagnosed per day, and the highest number of infections is in the 20-29 age group. About 70 percent of the infections come from abroad. The majority of new coronavirus findings are no longer the British variant. The South African variant has also not been found in Southwest Finland since the beginning of May. Harks Marttila, Tyk's infection doctor, says in a press release that the variant now on the move may be the India variant.

It says 'may', so perhaps they haven't actually sequenced it yet.

In the "No surprise there"-category, four separate infections occurred at the Denmark v Belgium game in Copenhagen last week. All were with the Delta variant (formerly of India) and public health authorities are advocating that everyone seated in one of seven specific sections should be tested as soon as possible.

Health authorities are saying they have no indication of the origin of the transmissions, but the cynic in me is thinking one or more false Corona passes may have been involved.

I think that transmission of the virus is more likely to happen on the way to and from the stadion or at one of the parties before and after the game.

It is not unlikely that some people may have used fake 'corona passports', but considering that you get one that lasts 72 hours after a negative test, there is plenty of time for you to start shedding in the meantime.
The one time I had to get tested, it was after a gardenparty because another guest, virtually unvaccinated (= had the first shot one day earlier), got ill and tested positive the next day when he still had time left on his most recent 'corona passport'.

A weird development in Sweden:
Quote:
Stenkastning

Throwing rocks
* In the spring, about 50 Danish-registered cars were attacked with stones along the E65 through Skåne.
* Denmark's Minister of Justice wants to get in touch with Sweden's ditto - Morgan Johansson - to discuss the attacks.
* "We have this at the highest priority," said Ewa-Gun Westford, police spokesperson.

The number of attacks appears to be growning:

Tre danske biler angrebet af stenkast - nu patruljerer svensk politi langs vejen til Bornholm (TV2.dk, June 23, 2021)

Last year, Sweden's minister of foreign affairs used Danes as scapegoats for Sweden's disaster, so this new development doesn't come as a complete surprise:

According to today's papers, of the 800 Finnish football fans crossing back from St Petersburg at Vaalimaa, the border in the East, a staggering 80 of them have tested positive for Covid19. The strain is the Delta variant. These are the ones who returned on Wednesday. The ones who returned in recent days, were largely waved through the border due to the heat and lack of tests. Four coachloads in all have arrived back in my part of the world. They have to quarantine for three days and then take a test. This weekend is one of the biggest in the Finnish year, it being Juhannus (St. John's: Midsummer), which runs through to Monday. No newspapers except digital for four days. Big family gatherings. Similar in Sweden. On the one hand this might be good insofar the infection if any is kept within the family, on the other, these same individuals are back at work on Tuesday.

Oh dear.

Very few people get their news from newspapers nowadays. I assume most of them will have received this particular piece of news from friends, relatives or each other. According to an Indonesian source, four hours ago, it was 86 infected - and still counting:
Quote:
According to local media, about 3.000 Finnish supporters crossing the border led local officials to allow 800 people to enter the country without being tested first.
(...)
THL also urges all Finnish fans who have returned home to immediately undergo a COVID-19 test within 72 hours to confirm their respective conditions, considering that the infection rate in Saint Petersburg is 20 times higher than in Finland.

For the benefit of Childlike Empress, a short video (2 min.) mainly about Lukashenko's vodka-based pandemic strategy, but also a few seconds with two Chinese who were appalled by the pandemic response it the parts of the world that chose not to go for ZeroCovid:

When we saw what happened in other countries when the outbreaks began, we were actually very worried. I was astonished by the time it took before they introduced any measures. Why didn't they follow our example? I actually didn't understand what they were thinking.

Here are some Swedes in St Petersburg. Sweden is through to the next round so their fans are still there. I wonder if some of them are travelling by road through Finland? Many fans have made a point of touring Helsinki and other places along the way.

Today is Juhannus (midsummer's day) and an official flag day. THL, the health authority, is urging people returning from Russia to test today and not wait. I doubt many will even be aware of this.

I think that almost all of them will have received the information on their cell phones - and if not, they will hear it from other soccer fans, bus drivers or airplane pilots.

Danish soccer fans have problems in Amsterdam today. They are supposed to get tested in Amsterdam in order to be able to get into the stadion, but the rapid tests aren't as rapid as they had been told, apparently.

The adventures of the Finnish soccer fans are obvious in the number of new cases.
I will be very surprised if something similar doesn't happen in Denmark after yesterday's celebrations.

Sweden's latest scandal:

Quote:
Pompous arrogant old men patting themselves on the back and celebrating their awesome Corona strategy with a well deserved wine tasting break away from it all.
What else would you expect from the Corona mismanagement team?
Sack FHM and start to save lives
Folkhälsomyndigheten skärpte restriktionerna – och högste chefen Johan Carlson åkte på vinresa
Wendy Isacsson on Twitter (June 27, 2021)

The director of Sweden's Public Health Agency, Johan Carlson, not only went on a wine-tasting trip immediately after having introduced local travel restrictions and warned against social gatherings. He said in his defense that he had asked for a change of rooms between dinner and wine tasting to avoid having to breathe in potentially contagious air, thus revealing that he was well-aware of the aerosol transmission of the virus when he and his companions risked getting exposed to it.

It is almost certain that it won't have any consequences for him

As to be expected everywhere, but this particular story is about Finnish soccer fans returning from Russia:

Contact tracers have now hands full of work trying to find the exposed, as there are dozens of tourist buses where infections have been detected. Many of those exposed and possibly infected have not stayed in quarantine but taken part in social events.

The Sunday figures are showing 95 new infections with one in southwest Finland. I am guessing these are 'weekend' (massive bank holiday weekend) figures and Tuesday may be a shock, once symptoms start showing.

As almost always, Sweden's Tegnell doesn't think that Swedish soccer fans returning from Russia are anything to worry about:

Quote:
Deltavarianten dominerar smittspridningen i Ryssland.
The Delta variant dominates the spread of infection in Russia. Returning Finnish soccer fans have also brought the infection home from Europe Championship game.
Finnish authorities fear the spread of infection may now accelerate - but Sweden's state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell is "not worried" about it.
- Our current measures are what is required to avoid spread of infection when people return from Russia, he says to DN.
Tegnell: "Not worried" about infected soccer fans

Tegnell doesn't usually worry when Swedes have every reason to do so.

News is that Lofven is resigning so a new government might bring changes to the Swedish covid landscape.

The Finnish version of BILD or the SUN, ILTA-SANOMAT is reporting that Neva Tours, based in Turku, Finland, the company that laid on seven coaches to St Petersburg has been receiving hundreds of hate mail and even death threats 'for bringing death into Turku' that the proprietor is taking the matter to the police.

In the interim, THL, the Finnish health authority was flashing messages across half-time football games - on tv screens [normally this only happens with severe weather warnings] - saying that all sports tourists from St Peterburg must self isolate for three days and not socialise with anyone (a bit late in the day after the bank holiday weekend), including not returning to work until they have had a covid test and a negative result confirmed.

Sweden national team are still in the competition. I expect most will have flown over but many will go by coach and ferry (a ferry Stockholm to Turku is incredibly cheap, about €15 return) as taking your own car is a bit problematic because once you hit Russia, all signs are in Russian only and in cyrillic script. Cars hired in Finland are not allowed over the border to Russia, so you'd have to take your own, be able to read Russian road signs and directions, etc., so it would not be surprising if many have opted for the tour coach and ferry route. There are also many more Swedes than Finns, being a more long-standing premier national team (this was Finland's first ever appearance in the finals of a major football tournament [being more of an ice hockey nation]).

However, the parliamentary opposition to the Löfven government also doesn't care much about the pandemic. The no-confidence vote against Löfven had nothing to do with opposition to Sweden's pandemic response. There is no ZeroCovid party or even an anti-herd-immunity-by-infection party in Sweden's Riksdag.

Almost 300 Finnish soccer fans have now tested positive for the virus after returning from St. Petersburg:

It is almost three weeks since we last heard from Rolfe. I hope nothing's wrong - apart from Scotland's numbers:
Quote:
THREAD Confirmed cases in Scotland are as high as they've ever been (3.2K reported today) - and it's not just more testing, as positivity rates are over 10% and as high as they've been since the January 2021 peak.
Week on week cases have more than doubled.
Prof. Christina Pagel on Twitter (June 28, 2021)
Relying almost exclusively on vaccinations is dangerous.

Sorry I haven't been in touch. I'm fine thanks, just trying to cut down on internet time. I was also away for a few days in a hotel in one of the safer corners of Scotland, with a friend. Big airspaces, open doors, long country walks, I think we were OK.

Scotland's numbers are absolutely terrible, another reason for staying away from the internet because it just makes me want to break things. And we're opening up regardless. I think they're genuinely trying to get the people who aren't yet vaccinated to catch the virus to increase the immune population. Which is going to come back and bite everyone, unfortunately.

I actually came to the thread to find out if it's true that the Swedish prime minister has resigned.

Critics of the Swedish strategy make the same assumption about Sweden's reopening:
Quote:
Den totala bristen på effektiva smittskyddsåtgärder i Sverige är ju lätt att förstå om man tänker på att Sveriges strategi är och alltid har varit flockimmunitet.
MaskUpSweden on Twitter (June 28, 2021)
The total lack of effective measures to prevent the spread of infection in Sweden is easy to understand if you consider that Sweden's strategy is and always has been herd immunity [by infection].

Is there any way for those of you who had AZ shots to boost the immunization with a shot of mRNA vaccine?

For those of us who appreciate dark humor, Folksagomyndigheten is still going strong:

Quote:
Det har varit en svår, men
lyckad, balansgång att
- å ena sidan -
visa hur vi lyckats hålla
smittspridningen i Sverige till
låga 10% av befolkningen, och
- å andra sidan -
samtidigt stoltsera med en
antikroppsförekomst om
mäktiga 25% i densamma.
Folksagomyndigheten on Twitter (June 28, 2021)
It has been a difficult but
successful balancing act
- on the one hand -
to show how we managed
to keep the infection limited
to 10% of the population, while
- on the other hand -
at the same time bragging
about antibodies in as many as
25% of the same population.

There is some talk of giving everyone third vaccine shots in the autumn, but considering we only have 50% of the population with two doses right now, I think the logistics of that are a bit questionable.

50% fully vaccinated isn't bad. Has something slowed down the rollout in Scotland/Great Britain?

“If you’ve been to St. Petersburg, you’ve been in an area where you run the risk of bringing the infection with you. Therefore, it is very important that people follow the quarantine instructions. This is especially evident in Finland’s development [tartuntaluvuissa]. We don’t want infections to spread to our workplaces, ”Tegnell says Dagens Nyheterille.

However, Tegnell added that the measures currently in place will prevent the spread of infections to those returning to Sweden from Russia.

According to the Swedish Public Health Authority, European Championship tourists who have visited St. Petersburg must spend a week in quarantine after returning and undergo a coronavirus test upon arrival in the country. For example, Swedish citizens do not have to present proof of a negative corona test result in order to travel to their home country.

In the meantime, Finland, which doesn't have the same laissez-faire attitude as Sweden is extremely worried about the new outbreak, virtually almost doubling every day since the last game, albeit relatively small numbers so far.

By Wednesday, 31 coronavirus infections had been diagnosed among Finns in southwest Finland who had traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, for the European Football Championship.

- By yesterday, there have been another hundred exposures related to infections, says Mikko Pietilä, Chief Physician of the Hospital District of Southwest Finland .

The delta variant of the coronavirus, the so-called Indian variant, has recently spread in major Russian cities, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Sequencing of positive samples from race tourists is still ongoing.

- We will have certainty in the next few days when the sequencing is completed. Two of the samples that have traveled to Russia so far have been found to be a delta variant. It doesn’t sound like much, but relative to the number of samples, the situation is serious, the chief medical officer points out.

Several of the Finnish supporters who traveled to the European Championships had already received the first dose of coronavirus vaccine before leaving. According to the Department of Health and Welfare, after a single dose of vaccine, the protective efficacy of coronary vaccines against the delta variant is only about 33 percent. It is important to take a second dose of the vaccine, as it is now known to increase the protective effect of vaccines to an average of 88%.

The delta variant is considered a concern due to its higher infectivity and spreading efficiency than its other viral variants. Nationwide, 338 cases of delta transformation have been reported by Wednesday.

On Wednesday , the highest peak of summer infections was reached in Finland , when 355 coronavirus infections were reported throughout the country.

Given the Swedish fans are for more numerous than Finnish, I can't see that a voluntary ten-day isolation is going to work, especially as most need to go to work, or if on holiday, can't see them giving it up to stay home. No word of going for a test straight away, as per the Finnish instructions - and to await confirmation of a negative result.

It seems to have slowed a bit. We were vaccinating about 50K people a day and that's now slowed to about 30K. Still ten times as many being vaccinated a day as are catching the virus I suppose. England's vaccination score is only a little behind Scotland's but their vaccination rate is more uneven. Despite that Scotland has far more virus than England which is the opposite of what was happening last summer. I'm not quite sure why this is.
