Political Correctness Gone Made - non Xian Xmas Carols

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-pol...14-gtbj63.html

Quote:
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has called for Australians to "rise up" to defend Christmas against what he labelled "political correctness gone mad".

Angered by a talkback radio caller whose grandchild's school eschewed traditional carols for a secular celebration, Mr Dutton said the "vast majority of Australian people want to hear Christmas carols" as we are "a Christian society"

"You make my blood boil with these stories," the Christmas enthusiast told 2GB radio's Ray Hadley. "It is political correctness gone mad and I think people have just had enough of it."
Where is my exploding irony meter? And a monkey, and a deadhorse being flogged.

Lat time I checked I'm a people, the majority of Australians seem to be practicing atheists, not Christians, and Christmas seems to be about a guy in a red suit who wants you to buy lots of things at this time of the year. Christmas is really an appropriation of a pagan winter solstice festival and Jesus if he was ever born was not born on the 25th of December.

You're factually correct but I think the issue is change (of any kind) rather than this specific PC change. A lot of people are small-c conservative so even if the new carols were simply brimming with Jesus and God and so on they's still be against them because they're not the carols of their youth.

I'm waiting for a "war on Christmas" campaigner to start complaining that today's Christmas singles aren't a patch on "I Wish it Could Be Christmas Every Day" or "Stop the Cavalry"

Or 'Alll Together Now', the Christmas song about war and football (like there's a difference).

Or my personal favourite, "Fairytale of New York".

'Tis the season when I only listen to CDs while driving, because every ing station wants to play those ing Christmas carols.

Lovely.

I wouldn't call it secular, but as an atheist I still love all the Christmas songs from my childhood. I don't care if they are inspired from religion; if they move me as an individual, that's all that matters.

I still love traditional carols, and Carols from Kings in particular. I suppose it stems from the days when I was in a catholic boys choir at age 10 or so. I'm a world-class bad singer now, but back in the day.......

???
I haven't seen the 2016 census figures but as of 2011, 60% of Australians identified as Xtian.
So, yeah, over-commercialisation or not, the majority of Australians are Xtian.

Is the school a government school? Then, far from being secular, the state is actually promoting no religion-as-religion by adopting and (in at least the one case singing "happy holiday" instead of "merry Christmas") converting religious songs.

"There is something wrong with a religious song, and you may not sing it." This is the clear message the state is making.

No it isn't!
Yes it is!

I always like "we three kings" as sung by the Robert Shaw Chorale

As a kid, I always wondered where Orientar was. Here's what I though the words were for years, by just hearing the song on dad's HiFi.

We three kings of Orientar
Bury gifts we travel so far*
Field and fountain, moor and mountain**
Following yonder star
***

(*made no sense)
(** almost made sense, I had to learn what fountain meant, other than something in a city plaza)
(***made me ask my older brother what yonder stars are)

Of course, I eventually learned the words.

Some years later, as a teenager, one of the countries in my created D&D world was Orientar, capital city Yondar. And yes, it had three kings, as did the chessboards in that land.

We need to go back to the interregnum for some proper puritan Christmas carols, such as Arrest These Merry Gentlemen.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I started watching, but gave up, and googled for the lyrics on line, but I was none the wiser.

You have to admit this part dripped irony. (The comment I'm quoting echoes my own reaction):
Quote:
Dutton says, ""If they want to conduct these sort of campaigns, do it online or do it in your spare time. Don't bring these sort of views into the minds of young kids."

Couldn't you also argue if people want to conduct Christian-pagan celebrations, that they should do it on their on time? Not force it down everyone else's throats.

Privatize the profits and socialize the losses. It's the American way. That's how Mnuchin got rich. Worse, he did it on the backs of elderly people who had been conned into reverse mortgages. Mnuchin paid zero, took on the debt then taxpayers bailed him out.
