Meanwhile some poor Royalist was handcuffed for looking a bit like a Stop Oil demonstrator.

Quote:
A royal fan who was mistaken for a protester and detained by police at the Coronation has spoken about her ordeal.

Alice Chambers was handcuffed and held for 13 hours when officers arrested Just Stop Oil protesters she happened to be standing near to on the Mall.

The architect told BBC Newsnight she was handcuffed, fingerprinted and questioned in a police station.

Doubtless the government will throw the police under the bus but IMO there's little doubt that they rushed through legislation to ensure that the Coronation passed off without any opposition or demonstrations and this is the inevitable result.

We're back to the 70's and 80's when "undesirables" were regularly hassled and arrested for no discernible reason. As a teenager I was regularly followed and stopped on my way home from Labour Party meetings.

The headline shows how insidious the inroads into our rights can be:

Coronation: Royal fan held for 13 hours after being mistaken for protester

Seems fair enough but if you think for a moment that headline assumes it would have been right to have arrested her if she had been a protestor.

We seem to be heading into a very unpleasant place. The only way I see this being reversed is when the "heartland" Tories who protest about the likes of HS2 and new developments start finding that they are being arrested for being a protestor.

Every year since 1990 the US Public healthcare spending has been greater than the UK as a proportion of GDP. More US Tax goes to healthcare than the UK

They won't be arrested in sufficient numbers to raise a stink until it's too late.

The new Public Order Act doesn't say anything about protests; it's all in terms of causing disruption or interference. The coronation caused massive disruption.
