That has absolutely and exactly bugger all to do with press-ganging into naval service.

I am, for purely performative reasons, shocked to the very core of my being by this.

I am regretting quoting quite so much of the post in question. Its' greasiness is oozing through my keyboard, and making typing mirs diffyliclupt.

Who is being press-ganged into Charles's coronation? I heard Graham Norton was invited to perform the ceremony but declined the honor, which means he won't be getting that OBE after all. Johnny Vegas volunteered to do it but Charles feared he'd steal the show. So instead they're trying to compel Ian McKellan to perform the thing but he said he'd only do it if he can dress as Gandalf, and that's being debated with the ceremony wonks. However it goes it's bound to be a huge spectacular disaster, or a huge disastrous spectacle, and either way I'm totally all for it.

Further to Gulliver Foyle's comments about the Scots and the Irish being made to do all the work. This is not just tongue-in-cheek, it has been a reality for hundreds of years, dating back to laws enacted by Elizabeth I.

Quote:
The impressment squabbles between the British Military and the Colonists had roots in the 13th Century. The act of “pressing” by the British Navy was common place. It was an instantaneous draft into naval service without any consideration for the pressed person or his family. In this article we wish to identify the overreaching practices that pitted Englishmen throughout the Empire against Parliament's laws.

First Queen Elizabeth I, in the 16th Century introduced a law called “An Act touching politick considerations for the maintenance of the Navy”. Parliament attempted to legitimize, define and clean up the concept with the Vagrancy Act of 1597. It targeted British subjects that could not support themselves. Unfortunately, the Vagrancy Act was practiced by Naval officers that knew only the needs of their “Man of War”.

The insistence that enforced labour only applied to the over-18's is a reflection of how little this history known of by the average person.

There was no exemption for English kids bar those that existed for all kids.

There was no exemption for English kids that did not also apply to Welsh kids, remember that was your claim.

Wales was incorporated into England in the 1500's, so fair enough, in law they would come under the same Acts. However, I was told about the special status of English children pressganged by one of the most knowledgeable persons I have ever met, and who actually wrote a book about the Scottish Lairds land clearances.

Remember, law today is very different to those of yesteryear. People weren't granted 'exemptions' or 'appeal'. They'd find themselves suddenly recruited or transported and good luck to them if they could successfully argue against it.

The idea that someone press-ganged in the street could turn around and say, 'Oh I say I am only 17' probably only applied to those wealthy enough to have documents to prove their age.

This thread certainly went to some strange places! One minute we're all agreeing that Charles definitely had Diana murdered, and he'll have to wear velvet pantaloons during the ceremony, and the next we're talking about kidnapping Welsh children in the 1500s! Truly the UK is a marvelment of fascination, most of which center around crime!

Vixen,

Pressing/Press-ganging =/= transportation. You keep conflating these very different things. Why?

Ding-a-ling-a-ling! Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen…and <ahem> the little folk. I don’t wish to be a party pooper (thanks, Gulliver Foyle) but may I interrupt the Spam Fritter course and if you could all just put down your school milk for a moment. I should like to take this opportunity to commend King Charles the Third for his and his illustrious divine ancestors bringing our great nation together in one happy united family <sfx cat call ‘Get on with it!’> in having created the title Prince of Wales, which His Royal Highness has now handed over to the heir apparent, Prince William. How marvellous it is that Prince William is not just a Duke of some county here and there but an additional Prince of an entire block of counties – I mean, it’s only Wales after all! - which I am sure warms the heart of every Welshman to have us English rule over them! <sfx sound of violins commences; ducks volley of bread rolls>

The actual coronating is Saturday 6th May; the extra bank holiday is Monday 8th May.

I only know this as I was concerned that Chucky was going to **** up our already booked jaunt to Scottishland.

And I'm hoping we'll have had a revolution by the time I come back from the outer fringes.

My mother, who consumes Fox News and talk radio and has an irrational hatred for Meghan Markle as a result, told me yesterday that "Charles is going to have an informal coronation so none of the ladies can wear a tiara, just so Meghan Markle can't." She had no answer when I asked her when Charles would be brought to justice for murdering his first wife.

If this actually happens, I will fully endorse also doing this for Presidential inaugurations, except it will be Keanu Reeves as Neo.

A barbie in the back yard. Everybody bring a cake or a salad and your favourite plonk. Folding chairs all laid out, the Casio in the corner so that whatever celebrity they managed to rope in can do a few songs.

Chucky III shouts out "Hey Jussie! Tear yourself away from the game for a mo and put that crown on me." Justin takes a swig from his stubbie and tosses the crown over and says "There you are sport, go for your life".

I heard that Meghan's going to hold her own coronation at home and invite tons of celebrity guests, a rival party to steal focus from Charles! She's booked a Spiderman impersonator and a clown, and there will be a bouncey castle and a petting zoo with mini-horses, and face painting and a make-your-own-sundae bar! It's going to be awesome. Charles is furious because he's not getting a bouncey castle, Camilla forgot to book one and it's too late now, you have to arrange in advance and put down a deposit. She said she'd get an inflatable swimming pool instead but Charles cried. It's all going wrong and he's not feeling like a real princess on his big day!

That sounds much more fun, I'll go to that one. Provided the magic oil is fully vegan & properly sanctified by an appropriatly grand Poobar of course.

If it's true, it's absolutely disgusting.

What, that Charles doesn't like swimming? He's okay with floating in the pool if he has those floaty arm things on, but he freaks out if his face goes under the water. Then he throws a tantrum and is all tired out well before nap time. Uneasy lies the head that weareth the crown, and so forth.

No, that there are people who want to steal focus from others.

You're just feeling torn between attending both events, aren't you? Well, if it helps make the decision easier Charles says they're having a choice of Mexican or Chinese, and Camilla's baking sugar cookies from her own recipe because Mary Berry threatened to put a curse on her if she used one of hers. Meghan's having typical Canadian fare: hot dogs, hamburgers, potato chips, alligator sandwiches, zesty curry salmon spheres, and hot fruit. Charles will give out a door prize of a crown jewel to whoever gets the lucky ticket, but Meghan's guests will each receive a gift bag full of snack-size candy bars, fruit gummis, and a small LEGO toy. Charles is too old for video games so there won't be any, but Meghan's hooking up her Wii to a big screen TV so people can play Wii tennis and bowling.

Very funny. But I'll stop this conversation now.

You would think Meghan could afford to book the actual Spiderman.

The real Spiderman is going to Charles's coronation, of course; he's a shameless social climber and wants to be made Sir Spiderman some day. J Jonah Jameson will be super mad when that happens! Aunt May was invited but won't attend, she's having her cat resurfaced so it repels water better.

Ah, that makes sense.
