I reside in Edmonton, a plain and dull city in the dirty oil capital of the world. Can't say I'm a complete skeptic, more of a 50/50 who insists on hearing both sides of an argument.

Thanks.

Hello people!

I'm a lurker who decided to get more involved.
A skeptic who gets upset too easily by all the nonsense I read online everyday.
I enjoy reading the forum to regain my sanity.

Cheers

Um, are you sure you're in the right place? Ask The Colonel, but I think the last sane person we had on these boards went missing in '03.

Are you a projectionist, like you project a lot? Or are you the A/V Guy from school? I always wanted to be that guy. He had keys to EVERYTHING, man!

Welcome aboard.

Okay, the most important thing is the following skeptical question...

What's more important? World peace or winning another Rugby World Cup? If you get this correct, you are allowed to proceed to the "Rugby" thread in Sports. I'm the honorary know-it-all American who hasn't a clue about the game but who nevertheless insists on proving how little I know. We need a few more SAF supporters in there - the place is over-run with Brits, Aussies and Kiwis.

Welcome aboard (and I envy you your home, notwithstanding the heat wave - one of my two or three candidates for most beautiful city on earth).

Thanks for the welcome. I am one of the few SA males who has absolutely no interest in sports - I'm the kind of guy who will answer the ultra-obscure Trivial Pursuit questions in science and literature, but stumbles on apparent no-brainers such as "Who is the captain of the SA rugby team?"

Otherwise there is no subject where I shy away from displaying my lack of knowledge!

Well, don't let that deter you. It hasn't kept the Aussies out of the thread, after all.

Actualy - we've had a couple of SAF members who claim the same thing. I guess it's all those rhinos and fish eagles and elephants and stuff. You guys actually have things to do with your weekends. (Ironically, it was a South African who turned me onto Rugby - on just such a weekend. We got up at about 0500 to do a morning watch for game in the Krueger(sic) so that he could get the family back to the lodge, nice and tired, in order for him to catch a rugby game at 2:00.)

Well, join in the fray. There's so much smarts around this place that I think we all feel a little humbled at various times by the expertise in one area or another. Meh? I stay away from the Math/Science guys. They're just scary! (But damn, when you need help?? They're right there to explain stuff in terms that even I can undxerstand.)

Hey All, a newbie South African here. I've been reading some very interesting threads here in the last few days, and I like it. I like it alot.

Must say, I'm a bit skeptic about some views on here, but on the other hand, I really respect and have found inspiration from others.

English is not my mother-tongue and I was subjected to a pretty twisted culture for about half my life. This, in conjunction with some of my views that would not always be accepted here, is sure to set me up for a few grillings, but that's just another way of learning, and that's what I hope to get out of being here.

Thumbs-up to the mods, senior members and all other positive contributors. You're doing a brilliant job.

Welcome! I hope the Politics forum didn't put you off.

I can't imagine a forum where everyone agreed on everything. How would we possibly learn anything new?

Welcome to all our other newbies, too. Really glad you've joined us, and kudos for popping in here to introduce yourselves.

The politics threads very nearly got me suspended after more than 20k posts.
I will for a while steer right away from there.

Hello JREFfers!

I tried joining this forum about 5 years ago and nothing happened. It worked this time though, obviously.

There used to be YouTube videos of people taking the Million Dollar Challenge.... what happened to them? I often argue with people who say Randi is a fraud and that the Challenge is fake, and I used to be able to send them a link to a YouTube video and say "Watch this, what's fake about it?"

There should be a bunch of videos online to refute the people who badmouth Randi. There are some videos of his old TV show here listverse.com/2008/04/10/top-10-psychic-debunkings/

Four of the links don't work.

Yeah, Politics is enough to put anyone off.

On Forums where everyone agrees, there's plenty of them, any newcomers with "strange" ideas are just worked out. Sort of what happens in many work and life situations too. Keen to engage with the minds here, as learning is all than can come from it.

Thanks Again for such an excellent Forum.

Handy tip: The Community and Humour forums are great places to meet members and rack up the 15/50 posts you need to be able to post links / have an avatar. You'll be needing to post links, since the unofficial forum motto is "Evidence?"

Again, welcome, and enjoy!

Hi all,
I'm in Sydney New South Wales Australia, originally from Perth Western Australia aka Bethlehem
Please don't offer me milk of any kind (makes me be sick) or kangaroo steaks (I just don't like the taste or maybe I've eaten too much of it) Rabbit and beer sounds good, does anyone have a drop of red perhaps instead of the beer?
I'm not a lurker I just found the site about an hour ago and think it looks a great place to find knowledge.
I'm definitely a 50/50, always like to hear both sides of an argument and have some specific questions to research here.
Sane me? No!
What is an A/V guy?
World peace is way more important than Rugby but nowhere near as important as Australian Rules Football.
Female, in my 50's (early 50's)
Cheers

Hello all,

I'm Azzthom, in my very early 40's and from the UK. I found this place a few days ago while discussing a "psychic" on another forum. I liked what I read here and decided to sign up. I consider myself an open-minded and optimistic sceptic. That is, I don't believe the nonsense, but I would love to be proved wrong. I'm a materials engineer, so I have a good grounding in maths, physics and chemistry. I may not post much, but when I do post, I'll try to make it count. Thanks for having me!

Welcome Azzthom. Open Minded hey ? Well have a glass off our Goats milk while you ponder on what to do next, and if you see the Goat pat it on the head to let it know it is appreciated. If you meet a fellow named Shemp just do what ever he tells you to do

Because when someone says "Please don't offer me milk of any kind (makes me be sick)" and "does anyone have a drop of red perhaps instead of the beer?" I think it seems more welcoming to accommodate those wishes than it does to label them with a somewhat demeaning epithet and completely ignore their requests.

No by all means, you are most welcome here. People come here all the time with open minds, but after a while for some reason they seem to become insane like the rest of us.Thats why we drink goats milk here it seems to help

Cool Skeptic in training?

Hi there!

I'm relatively new to the world of skepticism and looking forward to diving in and learning how to glean the truth from the bull. For some background, I am "naturally skeptical" in that if someone makes a claim that doesn't seem substantiated I will automatically raise the eyebrow. I'm just not going to believe any old Joe because he came around and said "I saw it so I know Bigfoot is real!", (insert unproved thing here), etc. But as I've started to get into the skeptical movement I've discovered that it's much more than that and can be hard work.

What really drove me here is that I'm being inundated from friends on all sides about alternative medicine. I'm looking to learn how to distinguish what works vs what doesn't. I find I'm having the most difficult time in communicating how their subjective experience of a "medicine" working does not necessarily mean that the medicine actually works and am looking for some help on how to be able to better communicate skeptical viewpoints. I hope this is the right place!

Hi right back at you!

You'll be off to the Science, Mathematics, Medicine, and Technology sub-forum I reckon. There's some scary smart people in there, so you're definitely in the right place.

Enjoy!

Long time reader...

... first time poster. At least I think this is my first post, it's been ages since I thought about this.

In any case, I'm a lifelong skeptic and freethinking guy.

Welcome terjoh. Just in time to try our new summer menu for newbs. It consists of rabbit salad served on a kangaroo mince mash and apples. Beverages are goats milk and Millers Draft beer.

Still haven't got the definition of 'beverage' down, have we?
