It's actually six years. This thread started in 2014.

I wonder if he ever watched that movie.

What has delayed the trial for so long?

One reports claims that it has to do with how Stand Your Ground law has changed.

Our shooter has already had one SYG hearing in which the burden of proof was on him, and he lost.

The law has since changed that the burden of proof is now on the prosecutor to show that SYG doesn't apply.

It's an open question what that means for pending cases like this. It's unclear if the SYG hearing must be reheard with the new burden of proof requirements or if it only applies to new cases.

Seems that the courts haven't resolved this issue yet, and the case can't proceed until it does. A tremendous stroke of luck for our killer.

The link that Hevneren posted details this. Waiting on the Florida high courts to settle this matter, and they work on their own schedule.

So basically now the dead guy has to prove the killer wasn't in fear of his life?

That's how it works for regular cops. I guess they're trying to decide if it should be different for a retired cop.

It wouldn't have been so difficult except the victim was a white guy.
