Missouri wins the race!

So it looks like Missouri will be the first state to have a defacto total ban on abortion this week.

"St. Louis, Missouri ó The last remaining abortion clinic in Missouri says it expects to be shut down this week, effectively ending legal abortion in the state.

In a statement Tuesday, Planned Parenthood said Missouri's health department is "refusing to renew" its annual license to provide abortion in the state. If the license is not renewed by May 31, Missouri would become the first state without a functioning abortion clinic since 1973 when Roe v. Wade was decided."

When will people learn that sex isn't for the poor it is really only for middle class and above?

One of our august legislators was crowing that they thought that the Missouri bill would get before the Supreme Court first.... Oh, the glory!

IMO.... The pro-choice folks have become rather complacent and need to wake up.

Even if Roe is overturned, there will be states where abortion remains legal, but that’s of little consolation to women without means.

No they haven't. Unless you mean people like Susan Collins.

As for abortion being legal after they reverse Row V Wade, I expect the senate to vote on federal laws outlawing all abortion the next day. Remember how long it took states to redraw their districts after the court struck down the voting rights act because it wasn't necessary anymore.

Not so fast Missouri!

Quote:
A judge in Missouri ruled on Friday that the state’s only abortion clinic can continue providing the procedure, blocking Missouri from becoming the first state without an abortion clinic in nearly 50 years.

Planned Parenthood said in a statement Friday that St. Louis Circuit Judge Michael Stelzer issued a temporary restraining order against the State of Missouri, allowing the clinic to keep providing abortions, and that he scheduled another hearing for June 4. The clinic, a Planned Parenthood facility in St. Louis, had been set to lose its license to perform abortions at midnight on Friday.

Seems like the State of Missouri is trying to get itself branded as the near homophonic "State of Misery."

Hopefully this isn't much of a misdirection, but I just heard it on the news again, and I'm confused... The PP in St. Louis was being threatened with being shut down, "after three failed abortions"... What exactly is a "failed abortion"? The woman died? The baby lived? Could someone clarify what this means, in not to graphic terminology, please?

I'm guessing that "failed abortion" in this case refers to drug induced abortion that resulted in complications requiring additional care. I don't see why this would be a licensing issue, drug induced abortions carry a small risk of this happening. Complications arising isn't necessarily an indication of malpractice.

Simply put, sometimes the body fails to expel fetal and uterine tissue after either a miscarriage or drug induced abortion and additional medical care is required. This is a known medical risk associated with women's reproductive health and should not be considered scandalous.

Drug induced abortion generally requires very light support. Two drugs are administered, one stop further fetal development, a second drug, administered later, induces contractions to expel the now terminated fetal tissue. The experience is sometimes compared to a heavy menstrual cycle. A total failure would be one where both drugs fail, but more likely is that the pregnancy is terminated but there are complications with the second stage.

The second medication sometimes partially fails, resulting in prolonged bleeding or other issues. Sometimes the fetal tissues fails to exit the uterus entirely and must be removed with a dilation and curettage procedure (the cervix is dilated and tissues is manually removed from the uterus). This is sometimes also a complication of natural miscarriage. Untreated this could be a very dangerous problem for the woman.
