Warning! Notice that the date is June 1st, not April 1st.

News (same old, same old) from the Swedish Public Health Agency's pandemic genius:
Quote:
The Public Health Agency in Vietnam say that they have discovered a new coronavirus variant that is a combination of the Indian and British variants. The combination seems to spread rapidly through the air, warns the head of the agency.
But Anders Tegnell at the Public Health Agency rejects the report.
- Historically, a virus has never changed basic things such as how it spreads, he says.
Tegnell about the double variant in Vietnam: Probably not airborne

Can't somebody tell this nincompoop that airborne transmission is nothing new? It is the way that SARS-CoV-2 has been spreading since the beginning of the pandemic. Why does a Swedish newspaper continue telling people what Tegnell thinks about anything?

Sweden loosening restrictions/recommendations:

Quote:
* Sweden relaxed several of its Covid-19 restrictions on Tuesday pertaining to public gatherings, eateries, amusement parks and outdoor competitions.
* The rollback comes after Sweden's number of new Covid-19 cases has dropped since mid-April.
* Many businesses welcomed the change though some believe the country is moving too quickly to lift restrictions as it comes down from its third wave of infections.

* Sweden has lifted travel restrictions for people entering from other Nordic countries, but restrictions are still in place for those travelling to Norway and it continues to affect personal relations across the border.
* Clara Hegge has not been able to see her dad as much as she used to, because she lives in Sweden, and he lives in Norway.
* "Before the pandemic, I would never have imagined that it would be a problem to have a relationship with someone in another country, especially not Norway," says her mum Lena Beltramin.

Virpi Flyg describes a recent Finnish outbreak at a hospital killing 17. Go to the tweet for more details:
Quote:
A traveller didn't self-quarantine after their trip despite recommendation
-> infected a contact with the Indian variant
-> a hospital epidemic of 100 people in Kanta-Häme, Finland
-> 17 people died
Virpi Flyg on Twitter (June 4, 2021)

I am surprised that so many hospital workers, 23 of the 42 affected of the nursing staff, were unvaccinated.

Jennifer Luetz, who is originally from Germany, lives in Norrköping, near Stockholm. She told Insider people "stared at me like I was an alien" when she started wearing a mask last February.
Luetz said she is in an at-risk group, and is afraid to stop wearing a one.
She said she "got used to the staring."
But she said "what was horrid, though, was the catcalls and the nasty comments, people laughing at you openly in the stores." She also said she received xenophobic comments for wearing a mask.
Others, who said they wore masks to feel safer, described similar reactions.
No-lockdown Sweden broke with most of the world and didn't require face masks. Those who wear them say they're treated with suspicion and abuse (BusinessInsider, June 5, 2021)

Many similar experiences described in the article, often by foreigners living in Sweden, i.e. people who get information about the importance of wearing face masks from outside of Sweden.

One of the reasons why so many get tested is that a negative tests is the way to get a temporary (72 hours) 'corona passport', which is required if you want to go to a bar, a restaurant, the movies etc.

However, some young people find that having to get tested is so inconvenient that they will rather get infected because they can then get a corona passport with a duration of 8 months after they have overcome the infection. This has probably contributed to locking down the party street Jomfru Ane Gade in Aalborg because of a steep rise in the level of infections:
Unge i Aalborg smitter med vilje hinanden med corona (TV2nord.dk, June 4, 2021)
Young people in Aalborg deliberately infect each other with coronavirus

Young people in Aalborg want to get infected to get the corona passport

Considering how close they are to getting the vaccines, running the risk of getting long covid (and of infecting others) seems to be extremely stupid. And if they are risk takers, they could opt for getting the J&J shot right away.

Tegnell & Co. can (and do) still pretend that the strategy itself, i.e. letting the virus spread, was fine if only the nursing homes had done their duty and kept the infection out, which most of us know is impossible unless you are able to keep nursing-home staff isolated from the rest of society.

We didn't see a thing
You can't hold us to blame
What could we do
It was a terrible shame
But we can't bear the blame

Denmark's number of new cases is very low today because of technical difficulties with reporting of the test results from the Copenhagen area.

A rare outbreak in Greenland seems to be under control again:
Quote:
One and a half week ago, Nuuk was locked down because it was feared that the coronavirus would spread in the town. After almost six months without Covid-19, it started going really fast in late-May.
Six people infected with corona have been reported healthy, and work at the building site of the airport has started again.

The outbreak began with two incoming travellers who were infected.

I think we all remember that Anders Tegnell's Swedish strategy was supposed to let the virus run through the younger generations at a rate where it wouldn't inundate the health-care system while the elderly and other risk groups were protected until herd immunity by infection had been achieved.
This was the reality of the Swedish strategy:
Quote:
The healthcare scandal is growing: doctors throughout Scania decided again and again that old people would not receive hospital care during the pandemic. In three days, for example, a single doctor in Svedala decided in secret that 62 of her patients would not receive care in ICUs.
Region Scania has now examined how 18 healthcare centers in Scania decided that old people would not receive hospital care when the corona pandemic broke out. The investigation concerns the doctors who decided to limit care for at least ten patients per day.

A Twitter thread in English:
Quote:

“Doctors decided systematically that the elderly would not receive hospital care during the pandemic. In three days, for example, a single doctor in Svedala made a secret decision that 62 of her patients would not receive care at ICU”.

I despair a lot thinking about the Swedish strat. With social welfare programs, Vision Zero, good pensions, public transit... I really envisioned people that cared about each other, even if it wasn't easy or cheap.

I moved here and everyone I got to know was incredibly kind, generous. As a people, I was blown away by the way Swedes just helped each other. And the numbers of charitable giving support that! So, awesome! People that care, thank goodness, I was right.

When the pandemic came along, I was ready to see "Team Sweden" pull together. To do everything they could to help contain things. "To Protect the Vulnerable!" (Which even was a way they doublethink sold us on the way things did eventually go.)

So many of the things that would help were minor requirements - recommend masks, use smarting test and trace programs. Others were much bigger asks, as I know virtual schooling is fraught with class disparities, learning outcomes, etc.

I watched, waiting for ...

That story about the Carpathia is amazing. That's how we should all have responded to this.

Yes, Jeremy Vyska's Twitter thread is excellent.

I can recommend a long TV documentary from March, Markus Lanz – Sweden unvarnished (ZDF.de, 11 März, 2021), but unfortunately it is in German with German subtitles.

However, I have translated a few minutes into English of an interview with a German doctor working as chief physician at a Swedish hospital. It is shocking to hear him describe the authoritarianism at Swedish hospitals and apparently in Swedish society in general. It also makes everybody complicit in the Big Lie, which probably contributes to the inability of so many people refusing to give it up. They themselves have been spreading it too or at least never stood up to it.

The media is telling the lie, and almost all authority figures are telling the lie to the media, and it is organized this way. Ordinary people are told not to speak to the media.

That is the reason why it was an eyeopener to Swedish opponents of the strategy when Danish TV interviewed people in the street in Sweden approximately six months ago: You would hear people object to the strategy while Swedish TV was busy trying to maintain the impression that nobody really objected - apart from the notorious 22 researchers, the 'hobby epidemiologists', as Tegnell called them.

You have the choice between bowing your head and accepting the lie or becoming a whistleblower and being ostracized:

Quote:
- The whole pandemic situation presented Sweden to me as almost fatalistic. They said, "Yes, it comes from above, so to speak. There's nothing we can do."
- Death is also a part of life.
- A little like that, too. I was standing there in the ward with the old people, trying to explain to the staff: "Don't panic. Please don't flee. Don't leave the old people alone and wear a mask." "What do you mean, masks? We don't have any masks."
- What was it like when you were, so to speak, on the other side?
- I suddenly had the terrible feeling of being alilen. I never felt alien in all the years I was here. And then I suddenly felt very alone with my criticism. I spent a lot of time warning. I was here as a chief physician. And very early on, they said to me that if I was too scared, I could apply for psychological help ...
- Really?
- Yes.
- Did the media ask for critical comments?
- At first, not at all. No, not at all. As hospital staff, we were even told to refer all contacts to the medie to one person who represented the region, and that we ourselves under no circumstances talk to the media. And I didn't get much support from the colleagues. People always said, "In this situation, it is important that we believe what the authorities tell us. That is especially important in a crisis. We shouldn't contradict them. That will only only make the staff uneasy."
(VoF, June 7, 2021)

I think that this also explains the attitude of the Swedish skeptics in this thread last year: If you buy into the idea of Swedish exceptionalism, you just can't accept the reality of Sweden being exceptionally bad at coping with the pandemic. You would rather deny reality and make up alternative facts and present them again and again in an attempt to save Sweden's image and thus your own belief in that fake image.

I admire the Swedish skeptics who oppose the Big Lie of Sweden's successful pandemic strategy. Most of Tegnell's fans have dropped out of the thread in the Swedish skeptics forum.

And the ones who make occasional appearances resort to the dumbest kind of nationalism imaginable. This one came today:

That is strange. The policy has been via THL - the health authority in Finland - that key workers should have priority vaccinations, which includes the police (unlike in the UK). In my rural region, we had a relatively low level of vaccination rates a few months back, which was reported in the regional newspaper. 'Why has XYZ got such a low rate of vaccination?'

The health centre bod responded back that it was because all the 'priority group' people from the nearby large town were coming along to our health centre for their priority vaccinations, meaning the oldies group had been pushed back in the queue. (We've now caught up somewhat.)

So it is surprising those guys in Häme were not vaccinated early on, as a matter of course.

I think a large part of the problem is the 'BBC-syndrome' whereby the Swedish press has been hesitant to challenge the government for the simple reason, they rely of the Swedish government for grants and funding, so toe the government line without causing too much controversy.

Mask wearing has worked well here as well after it became mandatory, but when it was still only recommended, it didn't work at all:
'Well, it might be a good idea if you start wearing masks, but it's up to you.'
I am pretty sure that mandatory mask wearing in indoor public places would have worked in Sweden, too. As it is, it became politicized much like in the USA:
'If you wear a mask you are weak and not a real patriot!'

I assume that Sweden is lending its Janssen (= J&J) vaccines to Iceland because Swedes are unwilling to get vaccinated with them. Denmark is vaccinating with J&J on a voluntary basis right now and considers including them again after more reports from other countries that J&J has fewer severe side effects than the AZ vaccines.

So, Sweden now has travel bans affecting non-EU countries, except the following few (remember, the UK is now non-EU). However, you can still enter Sweden via Denmark instead! Confused? You won't be!

At the moment, Sweden has entry bans in place that affect all non-EU countries except seven: Australia, Israel, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, or Thailand.

This means that if you are travelling to Sweden from a non-EU country that’s not on that short list, you need to fall into a category that is exempt from the ban. These categories include Swedish residents, EU citizens, and people travelling for essential work or urgent family reasons among some others.

If you don’t fall under those conditions, say if you want to travel from the UK, US or India to Sweden to visit family or friends, you cannot enter Sweden directly, and that entry ban is in place until at least August 31st.
But wait! You can enter via Denmark.

In order to travel from Denmark to Sweden, there are currently no requirements in place either to show a negative Covid-19 test or to prove a worthy purpose of travel, regardless of your nationality (note that if you’re travelling to Sweden from an EU/EEA country other than Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, you have to show a negative test). Travellers should note however that entry to Sweden is always at the discretion of the individual border officer, so there is no guarantee you will be able to cross the border into Sweden.

Can you travel to Sweden via Denmark? (TheLocal.dk, June 10, 2021)

The one thing you are required to do when you are on a train from Denmark to Sweden is to remove your face mask. The Swedish border police won't let you keep it on. I suppose you are still allowed to put it back on when they have checked your passport.
There are signs telling people going the other way that face masks are required once you enter Danish territory.
Traffic information: Transport between Sweden and Denmark

I am not sure that those signs will remain in place for long, though. The Danish politicians are very eager to get rid of face masks again.

Perhaps they should all compromise and wear their masks just below their nose.

Then everybody will be happy. I am going now.

The 'compromise' is that passengers on trains in Denmark will now only have to wear face masks as long as they are standing, which seems to be reminiscent of a time when nobody knew about aerosol spread. So I guess the sign on the trains between Denmark and Sweden will now disappear. And Swedish media will probably say that it means that Denmark has now been convinced that the Swedish strategy is superior, much like last year when countries started reopening after having hammered down the rate of infection with lockdowns.

There is no 'lockdown to end all lockdowns' as long as Covid-19 hasn't been eradicated, obviously, but there are lockdowns to prevent having to do the 'Dance' until a new, short and effective lockdown is needed. Australia seems to be on the verge of finishing another one.
