having a bunch of mini-Trumps that keep losing and refusing to gracefully give up the spotlight is probably not good for their political project, especially in swing districts.
That should have been enforced some time before 6-Jan-2021.

I mean, at least Trump actually won an election one time. Kari Lake has zero wins under her belt, but because the inmates have taken over the asylum, it's verboten to suggest that she was a bad candidate.

But yeah, I very much suspect that Trump running in 2024 as aggrieved, in denial loser is not going to have the same juice as when he was on his 2016 winning stampede.

Woah. Today a Texas House committee accused Republican AG Ken Paxton of multiple crimes—and now he will likely face impeachment as soon as this weekend.

This video from @scottbraddock shows papers being burned outside his office today.
The video is literally a dumpster fire.

Not necessarily about a single politician but more about republican group-think.

You know how Republicans are SO concerned about the debt that they would crash the economy over it? (McCarthy said it was the biggest threat the US faces) Apparently they have very short memories. So short that they are planning MORE tax cuts, even before they have dealt with the debt ceiling.

Paxton’s response is to call said Republicans “liberals”.

I bet nothing will come of it besides a slap on the wrist. He’s a hero there.

Texas House committee issues 20 articles of impeachment against Attorney General Ken Paxton

Quote:
In an unprecedented move, a Texas House committee voted Thursday to recommend that Attorney General Ken Paxton be impeached and removed from office, citing 20 accusations that include bribery, retaliating against whistleblowers and obstruction of justice.

Around 8 p.m., the House General Investigating Committee filed its impeachment resolution with the House clerk. It included the 20 articles listing a yearslong pattern of alleged misconduct and lawbreaking that investigators detailed one day earlier. On the House floor, some lawmakers could be heard yelling the number of the newly filed articles, and several could be seen reading the document minutes after it was filed.

The House will next decide whether to approve the articles against Paxton, which could lead to the attorney general’s removal from office pending the outcome of a trial to be conducted by the Senate.

2/3 needed for Impeachment.
I'm certain Paxton has enough dirt on the Representatives to avoid that.

I think there's a possibility he's worn his welcome with enough Republicans in the House to get impeached. The Texas House presently has 85 Republicans and 64 Democrats. (One seat is vacant; a Republican was expelled for inappropriate conduct with an intern.) So it would take 64 Democrats and 36 Republicans to impeach him. And the Committee that voted 5-0 to send the 20 articles to the floor was 3 Republicans and 2 Democrats. Paxton is presently facing several scandals and criminal charges.

And there's this:

Quote:
Gov. Greg Abbott has yet to come to Paxton’s defense, declining to comment on the committee’s allegations against the attorney general.

But Paxton has alienated some House Republicans. He has repeatedly criticized House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont, and his leadership as insufficiently conservative. And hours before the investigative committee revealed Tuesday that it had secretly launched a probe into Paxton, the attorney general called on Phelan to resign, pointing to a video of the speaker slurring his words to accuse him of presiding over the House while drunk.
He's got plenty of enemies in his own party. They may have finally decided to cut him loose as too much baggage.

The Texas Senate has 31 members, 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats, so 2/3 there would be 12 Democrats and 9 Republicans.

We'll just sit back and see how far this goes.

He won't be impeached. He'll "learn his lesson" from simply being threatened with the possibility.

According to Bloomberg,

Quote:
If a majority of the 149-member chamber votes in favor of impeachment, Paxton would be forced to leave his post immediately while the state Senate would hold a trial on whether he should be removed from office permanently.
Quote:
“It is imperative that the House proceed with impeachment so that Paxton is prevented from using the significant powers granted to the attorney general to further obstruct and delay justice, not just by avoiding accountability for his wrongdoings, but by undermining the integrity of our state government,” committee members said.
[quote]At a press conference Friday, Paxton claimed the impeachment attempt was illegal and that the legislative panel had denied him the opportunity to present evidence in his defense. He said lawmakers seeking his removal are “showcasing their absolute contempt for the electoral process.”[/QUOTE

Irony and hypocrisy meters are exploding world-wide. Paxton is a major election denier and responsible for bringing a lawsuit against several battleground states that voted for Biden. The SC threw it out on the basis of lacking standing.

Paxton's lawsuit:

“Trust in the integrity of our election processes is sacrosanct and binds our citizenry and the States in this Union together. Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin destroyed that trust and compromised the security and integrity of the 2020 election. The states violated statutes enacted by their duly elected legislatures, thereby violating the Constitution. By ignoring both state and federal law, these states have not only tainted the integrity of their own citizens’ vote, but of Texas and every other state that held lawful elections,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Their failure to abide by the rule of law casts a dark shadow of doubt over the outcome of the entire election. We now ask that the Supreme Court step in to correct this egregious error.”

Paxton's lawyer's argument against Impeachment boils down to this:

"The voters knew how corrupt he was when they elected him, hence removing him for his corruption would be against the will of the voters".

He might have a point there....

He will also cry buckets of loud, blubbery crocodile tears and ask his wife to forgive him. No doubt.

Then go straight back to his old ways.

Apparently, it only takes a majority to impeach, so only 12 Republicans and all 64 Democrats can do it.

The TX House has voted to impeach Ken Paxton. Hopefully, the Senate will convict him.

"The vote was 121-23, with two present but not voting, and three who were absent from the chamber. He will be suspended from office pending a trial in the Senate."

Lauren Boebert thinks antisemitism is anti-conservativism.

The Biden administration announced the National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism to protect Jewish communities across the US this week.

Biden released a video about the new strategy, saying hate has been "given too much oxygen" in recent years and has fuelled a "record rise in antisemitism."

But Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert denounced the plan in a tweet to her 2.5 million followers: "When they say stuff like this, they mean they want to go after conservatives."

The gun-rights activist described the newly-announced "tactics" —which include encouraging social media companies to tackle antisemitism and to "build cross-community solidarity" — as "straight out of the USSR's playbook."

Typical of Boebert to get it upside down and backwards, since as I understand it, during the reign of the USSR Jews had a separate passport designation and were not considered to share the nationality of the SSR's they inhabited.

OK, surprise me. How did he make general officer rank if he was certifiably insane? My understanding is that doesn't happen.
