I know Don Jr isn’t a politician, but I have a question about him that is too small for a new thread.

That he knows nothing about Elon Musk, Twitter, free speech, Pearl Harbour, or history in general.

Sorry, he's just confirming what we already know. There's nothing new here for us to learn.

What is he trying to say?
He's an idiot. And he's an emotionally scarred little boy still trying to get his Daddy's love.

He also knows nothing about what literally means.

But more specifically, if #45 is already banned from Twitter, why would Junior be upset about Musk wanting to champion free speech? Such a move cannot hurt daddy and depending on Musk’s understanding of free speech might very well help daddy.

Florida has rejected 40 textbook submissions...MATH textbooks...for violating the state's new "Don't Say Gay" law because they allegedly contain CRT references. What? Do they contain things like "If a white cop stops 12 men at traffic stops and shoots 8, what percentage of the men were black?"

Not to step on your joke, but note that the 3/5 of a vote that slave counted for wasn't their own vote. It was used for the number of that state's legislators in the House.

True it was really more of a question of "how many people that can't vote and are owned as property should count towards my state's legislative power?"

Zero would have been the better answer than three for every five.

It's interesting seeing the top headlines that come up with a Google search.

Washington Post:
"Florida rejects math textbooks for 'prohibited' topics including critical race theory"

CNN:
"Florida rejects several math textbooks from schools citing Critical Race"

Florida Department of Education:
"Florida Rejects Publishers' Attempts to Indoctrinate Students"

Fixed it for how I initially read it, which I thought would probably help with, for want of a better word, "comprehension".

What is he trying to say?

He doesn't understand that what Musk wants is to allow people like Trump to spew his ******** on Twitter without restriction. He's upset about what he sees as "free speech violations", at least that's how I understand it. Musk is still a Trumper isn't he?

I could be wrong but since a Trump is saying one thing it is pretty safe for me to believe that the exact opposite is true.

No, and never has been a 'supporter'. But, he is not super anti-Trump either. He says he prefers to stay out of politics.

This goes back to the whole "show me what says that" nonsense proponents of the bill tried to use. No, the bill doesn't specifically use certain terms, but we all heard the rhetoric and hysteria leading up to it and around it. And the bill is vague enough that whatever someone gets a hair up their butt about and declares "controversial" is now banned.

That's exactly how Jim Crow laws worked.

When asked by news media to present specific examples from the "rejected for illegal content" books, the FL Dept. of Education failed to do so.

Quote:
In a statement Friday, the Department of Education said 54 of 132 submitted textbooks, about 41%, were rejected for not conforming with the state's Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards.

The rejected books included references to CRT, Common Core and Social Emotional Learning in mathematics, the department said.

The highest number of books rejected were for grades K-5, where 71% didn't meet the standards, the department said.

The department didn't give examples of which books were rejected or the standards that weren't met.
Quote:
"Math is about getting the right answer, and we want kids to learn to think so they can get the right answer, it's not about how you feel about the problem or to introduce some of these other things," DeSantis said.

Democrats said the move is the latest by the state to control public schools.

".@EducationFL just announced they're banning dozens of math textbooks they claim "indoctrinate" students with CRT. They won't tell us what they are or what they say b/c it’s a lie," Florida Rep. Carlos Smith tweeted. "#DeSantis has turned our classrooms into political battlefields and this is just the beginning."
https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/...dents/2738376/

CRT has never been, and isn't, taught in elementary schools. It's a college level or Advanced Placement High School course. This is just another 'create a boogeyman' for the GOP to clutch their pearls over.

And it was a crap question construction as well.

It came from an online worksheet from around 2012, though AFAIK it is still available, though it's been toned down a bit. It was never part of a textbook. It comes up periodically as a controversial thing that some teacher has assigned.

Here is what you're referring to.

https://supercopyeditors.com/blog/wr...on-goes-viral/

It was part of a math worksheet that also included a "person puzzle" and intended for grades 10 and up which is obvious unless you think primary and middle schoolers are doing algebra. Also, it wasn't in a textbook but on a website that can be downloaded for use. This a parent having a conniption fit over it:

"Last night my wife brought to me a picture of MATH HOMEWORK, pictured below, from a student that she was tutoring that is in the Troy R-3 School District. Clearly this is not math homework, but an attempt to normalize sexual activity to our students behind the backs of parents!"

It does no such thing.

Yes, it was part of a math question and that wasn't the question construction, either. See the link above.

the only thing I've seen so far is an allegation that this appeared in Missouri schools, and that, supposedly, it also was used somewhere in Pennsylvania at some time. But the only source I've seen for that is a couple of far right web pages. I have seen no source on this that I would trust for impartiality. I was expecting maybe Snopes would have something by now, but it doesn't seem to. I imagine something will come up soon.

I think I understand the intent & motivation behind the original creation of the sheet, but I think the combination of math and Maya Angelou's biography is...weird and probably unproductive. I'm okay with teaching either thing separately, but I don't think they should be combined, and especially not like that.

But that's just a teaching-strategy issue, not a moral issue.

I know that such things were said, but I don't see how anyone who's actually read the worksheet could possibly interpret it that way. It's like saying that Jaws was an attempt to normalize skinny-dipping.

As a former teacher, I think the concept is fine but those two "fill in the blanks" were not a good choice by the creator of the worksheet. I could have seen the reaction of some parents a mile away and would never have used it.

It's kind of stupid. Firstly, the "assignment" didn't come from a textbook, and the incident in regards to it didn't happen in Florida.

But even if it had, how does the fact that a person was raped as a child appearing in a quiz equate to "teaching critical race theory"? Is conveying the fact that a black person suffered any hardship at all, whether or not the harm is even alleged to be an act of racism, automatically "CRT"?

Oh what am I saying, of course it is.

Not quite a politician thing, but close enough, I think, given the state of the Republican Party.

Quote:
Jesse Watters jokes about how he courted a woman 14 years his junior. He let the air out of her tires so he could offer her a ride home. He leaves out that he was married at the time. This is some stalker nonsense. She also worked for him. It's a Fox News love story
To poke at something more directly said by Republican lawmakers, though, here's an accusation of grooming and a powerful refutation of it.

I hope McMorrow made Theis feel ashamed of herself. But, I doubt it. People like Theis have no shame. Not only is what Theis said disgusting and stupid, it's also lazy because she's just parroting the latest GOP idiocy. She's not a leader, she's a follower.

Florida is making itself a state that people will not want to visit.
FOr a state that is so dependent on tourism that is just crazy.

CRT has never been, and isn't, taught in elementary schools. It's a college level or Advanced Placement High School course. This is just another 'create a boogeyman' for the GOP to clutch their pearls over.

This, Most people shouting about Critical Race Theory don't know what it is.
Actual CRT I am not crazy about as a theory...it has too much of an agenda for me and it usually pretty distorted...but this has nothing to do with the crap going on in Florida.

I think they are fine with burning everything down to own the libs.

Florida and Texas are both on my lists of places to not visit. Florida is full of old people and bugs. Texas is full of Texans.

I won't go to either state. Crazy does not attract me.

ETA: De Santis is actually up in the polls for re-election. Just goes to show that bigotry, intolerance, and being a Trump wanna-be is big in FL. No, thanks.

It’s a convenient bugaboo to get the GQP riled up.

But at least it will be safe from space pirates!
