Here's something that might seem minor but actually is pretty significant.

China has congratulated Albanese on his victory.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had a warm welcome message for Anthony Albanese. Is this the start of a new friendship with China?

Quote:
After close to two-and-a-half years of a Chinese cold shoulder, Beijing has moved quickly to show it's willing to patch things up with the newly elected Albanese government.

Premier Li Keqiang's congratulatory message would be routine under normal circumstances, but the warm language referencing the Whitlam Labor government's establishment of diplomatic ties with the People's Republic 50 years ago set the tone.

Mr Li said China was "ready to work with the Australian side to review the past, face the future, uphold principles of mutual respect, mutual benefit" — a far cry from the Cold War mentality language often hurled at the Morrison government.
China is expecting their relationship to the Albanese government to be significantly better than their relationship to the Morrison government. Whether this will actually be the case remains to be seen.

I was looking at the Brisbane results on the ABC and got a little confused why it was still an LNP v Labor race on there instead of LNP v Greens.

Two things came out as interesting to me when I was looking at preference flows.

The first was that the Liberal Democrats had 2 different how to votes depending on your major party preference. So after they are excluded and their preferences go UAP then PHON, there would be a small split where some LD votes go to Labor instead of entirely to the LNP.

The second and most surprising one was that Animal Justice's HTV card preferences Labor before the Greens. Until we actually know the preference flow there's a very real chance that Labor can get enough votes to take second place meaning they'll win the seat on Greens preferences.

This ends up being a question as to who the LNP will lose to.

Latest vote counting shows Labor needs 2 of 6 seats for a majority. Looking good.

Anything would be better than the Australian people being told that the Chinese are a threat to Australia.

The Staircase actor, the incomperable Colin Firth, is only a haircut away from Scomo. Maybe his next role? “Scomo the Musical”.

And I thought Irish elections took a long time to settle.

The PM was sworn in and flying to meet international leaders Monday after the weekend election. I think we have settled pretty well.

But there are unfilled seats.....
Over here there would be no vote for Taoiseach until the counts were complete.

There are indeed a few seats still unfilled, and we won't know if Labor holds a majority in the House of Reps until they are. However, we do know that Labor is forming government - no other outcome is possible at this time - and we can proceed with the business of government from there.

He received cooperation guarantees from some of the independents to allow this.

Oh, and the other thing is that we have Proportional Representation. If a race is close - if no-one has a clear majority, it can take quite a while to count preferences. The more rounds of counting you have to go through, the longer it takes. That's just the way it is.

Which helps if that is needed. Parliament isn't sitting yet. Most ministers haven't yet been named. So though Albo headed off to Japan real quick, it's not true to say that government is fully operational at this time.

It was essential for the swearing in?

The Governor General chooses and swears in the Prime Minister (and the other Cabinet ministers). Unlike Ireland, he can choose any member he likes and does not need a recommendation from Parliament.

It is pretty obvious that we have a Labor government (whether minority or majority is yet to be determined). Scott Morrison conceded defeat and Anthony Albanese was able to claim victory on election night so there was no impediment to having him sworn in.

Yes, without which it would have been hard to represent the country at Quad. But though the election is "settled", it isn't over.

Is Barnaby on the way out?

Barnaby Joyce's leadership of Nationals hangs in the balance, as deputy David Littleproud circles

Quote:
Barnaby Joyce's grip on the Nationals leadership could be slipping, as colleagues encourage his deputy David Littleproud to mount a challenge when the party meets in Canberra as soon as Monday.

The ABC understands Mr Littleproud has not been actively canvassing his colleagues but has the support of almost half of them.

Privately Mr Littleproud's backers say he is the best person to "unite the party" as the Coalition tries to rebuild itself in opposition.

They have also said Mr Joyce has told them he would consider stepping aside in 18 months to make way for a new leader.

Mr Joyce still enjoys strong support in the party room with former resources minister Keith Pitt publicly backing him to remain as leader, and several others telling the ABC they are "struggling" to find a reason for change.

Mr Joyce told the ABC he will "definitely" nominate for the leadership, even if there is a challenge. But he stressed he was "completely at ease with the democratic process."
Littleproud seems okay to me. He's good on climate change, which is refreshing. And his "biodiversity stewardship" program doesn't seem bat**** insane, which is also refreshing.

I hope Barnaby is on the way out. We can't have a potato AND a beetroot as opposition.

Albo was brought up in Camperdown, a slum next door to the bigger slum I lived in, Chippendale.

Interestingly when I was a young kid, and before Albo’s time, much of that working class suburb was demolished to expand Sydney Uni.

So a born battler.

Yeah we use PR-STV with all the fun that entails. The count has been called the last blood sport.

Labor only needs one more seat for an absolute majority, with four undecided. They are looking very good in Macnamara.

According to the AEC only 100 votes separate them from the Greens. If they can't keep 2nd place they won't win the seat.

Brisbane still looks to be a toss up, Labor aren't going to win in Gilmore and Lyons is on a knife edge as well. I honestly see minority government as a more likely option.

It’s good to see the new PM elevating political discourse in this country and ensuring his team maintain that dignity.

Well I don’t get this. Labor are leading comfortably in Macnamara and Green preferences will flow their way.

I misread the data. You're right. Looks like it's pretty locked in.

AEC has Labor second on first preferences but enough preferences are flowing to the Greens for them to take second place.

ABC is showing Lib v Green on their website.

Absolutely a honeymoon and he is going to be challenged hard with stuff ups, scandals and crises that may look to have no good option.

What I am seeing however is someone talking to interviewers in a genuine way about serious issues like climate change. Consider the way Morrison approached the topic in slick marketing mode lest he upset sponsors Murdoch, Koch bros, and their Coalition colleagues wanting to keep them and coal voters happy. You knew he wasn’t giving straight answers as he played the interview questions. Same with anything vaguely bordering culture war issues like the treatment of women. No, we have definitely opened all the windows up and let out the stench.

It will be a test of character for not to he a weasel like Morrison when faced with the tough questions, and keep his colleagues on the straight and narrow and not protect and enable. If he ever finds himself talking like Scomo from marketing he should walk.

The thing is Also doesn't have dickheads in his Cabinet. As I have argued previously, many are at least the equal of him. Compare and contrast to the Coalition. Simon Birmingham was one of the few decent ones, but he has retired.

So it's all down to Macnamara and Labor has a 18,000 vote lead. Concede LNP and give Labor the majority it deserves.

Still it will be wafer thin, and discipline will be required. There are enough head kickers there (like Marles) to ensure nobody does anything stupid.

But who knows in Australian Politics now? You just need a backbencher to mouth off at any religious group or express concerns about trans rights (for just one)and the "sack him/her" chorus from Fox and News becomes deafening.

Pocock hasn't taken Zed's senate seat yet, but it's starting to look more and more like he's gonna.

That will be a happy day.

Peter Dutton, a ferocious partisan, is now trying to walk both sides of the street

Quote:
If the Liberal party had full control of its destiny, or if there were a suite of viable options, this political movement would not be presenting a fresh leadership team of Dutton and Barnaby Joyce as the answer to Saturday’s electoral rout, because – how can I put this politely? – that would be nuts.

Turns out Morrison told the Border Force to reveal they'd intercepted a boat on election day.

Its not surprising that they'd cynically do that for votes. It also shows that having stopped taking about the boats didn't actually stop the boats.
