Here's something that might seem minor but actually is pretty significant.
China has congratulated Albanese on his victory. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had a warm welcome message for Anthony Albanese. Is this the start of a new friendship with China?

I was looking at the Brisbane results on the ABC and got a little confused why it was still an LNP v Labor race on there instead of LNP v Greens.
Two things came out as interesting to me when I was looking at preference flows. The first was that the Liberal Democrats had 2 different how to votes depending on your major party preference. So after they are excluded and their preferences go UAP then PHON, there would be a small split where some LD votes go to Labor instead of entirely to the LNP. The second and most surprising one was that Animal Justice's HTV card preferences Labor before the Greens. Until we actually know the preference flow there's a very real chance that Labor can get enough votes to take second place meaning they'll win the seat on Greens preferences. This ends up being a question as to who the LNP will lose to. |

Latest vote counting shows Labor needs 2 of 6 seats for a majority. Looking good.

The Staircase actor, the incomperable Colin Firth, is only a haircut away from Scomo. Maybe his next role? “Scomo the Musical”.

And I thought Irish elections took a long time to settle.

There are indeed a few seats still unfilled, and we won't know if Labor holds a majority in the House of Reps until they are. However, we do know that Labor is forming government - no other outcome is possible at this time - and we can proceed with the business of government from there.

Oh, and the other thing is that we have Proportional Representation. If a race is close - if no-one has a clear majority, it can take quite a while to count preferences. The more rounds of counting you have to go through, the longer it takes. That's just the way it is.

The Governor General chooses and swears in the Prime Minister (and the other Cabinet ministers). Unlike Ireland, he can choose any member he likes and does not need a recommendation from Parliament.
It is pretty obvious that we have a Labor government (whether minority or majority is yet to be determined). Scott Morrison conceded defeat and Anthony Albanese was able to claim victory on election night so there was no impediment to having him sworn in. |

I hope Barnaby is on the way out. We can't have a potato AND a beetroot as opposition.

Albo was brought up in Camperdown, a slum next door to the bigger slum I lived in, Chippendale.
Interestingly when I was a young kid, and before Albo’s time, much of that working class suburb was demolished to expand Sydney Uni. So a born battler. |

Labor only needs one more seat for an absolute majority, with four undecided. They are looking very good in Macnamara.

According to the AEC only 100 votes separate them from the Greens. If they can't keep 2nd place they won't win the seat.
Brisbane still looks to be a toss up, Labor aren't going to win in Gilmore and Lyons is on a knife edge as well. I honestly see minority government as a more likely option. |

It’s good to see the new PM elevating political discourse in this country and ensuring his team maintain that dignity.
Dutton does look like Voldemort though, doesn’t he. |

If it's not Potato and Beetroot, it's Voldemort and Jabba the Hutt.

I have been listening to Albanese’s post trip interviews. It’s very refreshing to have a smart leader with sincerity and vision instead of a clever leader with agendas talking out the side of his mouth.

Hmmm, they sound like what we might call "scrutineers"? Although for Australia, scrutineers are usually party-affiliated watchdogs.
In any case, the AEC staff do the counting, and this is overseen extensively by all parties and the media to ensure scrupulous fairness. Because we have all paper ballots, counting is always going to be slower than electronic tallying. And if there's a challenge, they can be recounted. |

Absolutely a honeymoon and he is going to be challenged hard with stuff ups, scandals and crises that may look to have no good option.
What I am seeing however is someone talking to interviewers in a genuine way about serious issues like climate change. Consider the way Morrison approached the topic in slick marketing mode lest he upset sponsors Murdoch, Koch bros, and their Coalition colleagues wanting to keep them and coal voters happy. You knew he wasn’t giving straight answers as he played the interview questions. Same with anything vaguely bordering culture war issues like the treatment of women. No, we have definitely opened all the windows up and let out the stench. It will be a test of character for not to he a weasel like Morrison when faced with the tough questions, and keep his colleagues on the straight and narrow and not protect and enable. If he ever finds himself talking like Scomo from marketing he should walk. |

So it's all down to Macnamara and Labor has a 18,000 vote lead. Concede LNP and give Labor the majority it deserves.
Still it will be wafer thin, and discipline will be required. There are enough head kickers there (like Marles) to ensure nobody does anything stupid. But who knows in Australian Politics now? You just need a backbencher to mouth off at any religious group or express concerns about trans rights (for just one)and the "sack him/her" chorus from Fox and News becomes deafening. |

Pocock hasn't taken Zed's senate seat yet, but it's starting to look more and more like he's gonna.
That will be a happy day. |

Turns out Morrison told the Border Force to reveal they'd intercepted a boat on election day.
Its not surprising that they'd cynically do that for votes. It also shows that having stopped taking about the boats didn't actually stop the boats. |
