Here's a crazy thought that occurred to me last night. Could Labor appoint one of the Greens or an Independent as speaker? Does the speaker have to come from Labor?

I ask because I genuinely don't know. But it would seem an obvious answer to keeping their majority with 76 seats.

It’s certainly happened before, maybe with Gillard. I will check.

ETA Peter Slipper. He was appointed by Gillard as Speaker but resigned the day after and stayed as an independent Speaker.

Right, but he was a member of the party when he was appointed. So it's not quite the same thing as appointing someone from a different party.

He was a member of the non-governing party, as would an independent if made Speaker now.

The Government can now appoint a speaker and still have a majority.

NB: The speaker does not normally vote.

Independent Rebekha Sharkey's name for Speaker was brought up on ABC radio news this morning.

I just checked the AEC website. The official results page lists the ALP with 77 seats. I hope that's a good enough source for Psionl0.

According to the Guardian we're getting the announcement of the ministry in about 20 minutes.

And then cry havoc, and let slip the MoGs of war!

Okay, here's a better roundup than a Twitter post:

Anthony Albanese unveils Labor government ministry

Quote:
The first Muslim ministers in Australian history will be sworn into the ministry tomorrow, two of several appointments in the new government that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says "will be as inclusive as Australia itself".

Ed Husic will be sworn into cabinet as Industry and Science Minister, while Anne Aly picks up the Early Childhood Education and Youth portfolios, making them Australia's first Muslim ministers.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the new ministry also set a record for women's representation.

"This is the largest number of women who have ever served in an Australian cabinet, with 10 women in the cabinet," Mr Albanese said...

I don't know if political satire is ok here but this article from The Shovel pretty much sums up Dutton right now.

It is all so on point but this is especially good.
As I’ve always said, ‘Judge a man on his carefully crafted persona when he’s vying to be Prime Minister, not on the words he’s said, the things he’s done, the people he’s supported, the causes he’s stood up for, or the people he’s disparaged in the past’.
It’s an insult to our intelligence to cast his issue as being a negative PR problem. You would expect him to do it but its sad to see the media framing it in the same way.

Oh, and here's an interesting thing. The Australian Federal Police is being reorganised out of the Home Affairs portfolio and into Attorney General's. Home Affairs will retain disaster response and recovery.

Agreed.

Also, this piece of absolute **** was revealed today:

Coalition scrapped recovery plans for 176 threatened species and habitats in one of its final acts

Quote:
‘On what sort of planet does the commonwealth think they don’t need a recovery plan for a Tasmanian devil’, asks Wilderness Society

Recovery plans designed to prevent the extinction of almost 180 threatened species and habitats, including the Tasmanian devil, were scrapped by the Coalition in one of Sussan Ley’s final acts as environment minister.

Last year, the Morrison government proposed removing the requirement for a legislated plan for 185 plants, animals and habitats, including several plans that were years overdue.

In March, Ley signed off on decisions to remove that requirement for 176 of the species and habitats, with the move quietly published by the environment department after the election was called in April.

Ley made the decisions despite a government call for feedback receiving 6,701 responses, all disagreeing with the proposal.

Tough titties, Peter! You lost.

Quote:
Dutton says department changes bad for security

AAP has this report on the overhaul of several government departments:

An overhaul of several government bodies ordered by the new prime minister will make Australia less safe, the opposition leader says.

But Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus says such a claim is ridiculous and wrong.

Anthony Albanese announced this week that the Australian Federal Police would be moved out of the Home Affairs portfolio. Instead, the police force will be overseen by the attorney-general’s department.

Home affairs was created by the previous coalition government to bring together law enforcement and security agencies into one department.

The home affairs department, to be headed by new minister Clare O’Neil, will take over natural disaster response and mitigation.

But Peter Dutton - who oversaw home affairs before becoming defence minister under the previous government - said separating the AFP from the department would reduce Australia’s capacity to track criminals.

The changes were made to appease Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus who wants to oversee the police force, Mr Dutton told 2GB on Thursday.

Mr Dreyfus told AAP the government always put Australia’s interests and national security first.

“Any suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous and wrong, and the opposition leader should reflect on his behaviour,” he said.

Labor has for some time believed the AFP best fit under the attorney-general as its role is to enforce Commonwealth criminal law.

The Australian Federal Police Association has backed the move.

On the anniversary of Mabo, the Ngunnawal people have lodged a Native Title claim over the entire ACT and parts of NSW. I'm not sure what this will mean to my day-to-day, but good for them.

Twitter is my source, but it says that Shadow Treasurer, and climate denier, Angus Taylor called a press conference about the RBA interest rate rise. How many journos turned up@? Zip.

The LNP is in a world of hurt with Dutton, Lay and Taylor.

Oh by the way, Lay has legally changed her first name to Sussan. Why? On the advice of her numerologist.

Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up. LNP out of power for 12+ years.

Can't say I'm not happy that Eric Abetz just lost his senate seat (official results from AEC have dropped). Aside from Tony himself, he was my least favourite member of that particular administration.

One guy from the UAP made it to the Senate:

Quote:
Victoria has delivered Clive Palmer's United Australia Party its only seat in federal parliament, after UAP candidate Ralph Babet snared the final Victorian Senate seat almost a month after the election.

The Australian Electoral Commission this morning confirmed the final results for the six Senate vacancies in Victoria, after the distribution of preferences.

Mr Babet claimed the final spot ahead of candidates for the Legalise Cannabis Australia party and Pauline Hanson's One Nation.

The result also means Liberal candidate Greg Mirabella — husband of former federal minister Sophie Mirabella — misses out on a Senate seat.

I saw a headline on the ABC news channel saying that the senate results are now final, and that no party has a majority.

When did a party last have a senate majority? I’m pretty sure that even with the Ruddslide Labor didn’t have a majority.

Labor: 26
Coalition: 32
Greens: 12
JLN: 2
One Nation: 2
UAP: 1
David Pocock

Labor will need all 12 Greens, plus at least 1 crossbencher, to get a 39-vote majority

AFAIK not since 1977 when the Fraser government held a record majority in the House of Representatives.

In 1984 the Hawke government made it virtually impossible for any party to gain a majority in the Senate by increasing the number of Senators from each state from 10 to 12. Previously, each state elected 5 Senators at each election so one party was bound to win more than the other (unless an independent won the 5th spot). But with 6 Senators facing the polls a party can't win more than half the seats in any state because 6 is an even number. To win 4 out of the 6 seats would require 57% of the vote which is rare.

The Libs and the Democrats opposed this move but it finally passed the Senate when the Nationals voted yes in an act of blatant self interest.

Final two-party preferred for the election has worked out at Labor 52.13%, Coalition 47.87%, a swing to Labor of 3.66%.

With 16 of the 151 seats going to independents, the 2PP result is not as relevant as it was in the past.
