Also in Phoenix, a few days ago there was a shooting a few days ago at the drive-thru of a Jack in the Box about 7 miles away, where one employee was killed and another wounded. Sounded at the time somebody was unhappy with their Sourdough Jack, but it turned out to be two young (22-23) year-old women who were working there had an argument over who had to take out the trash. One of the women had a boyfriend who also worked there and according to the other woman, he intervened and intimidated her. Other woman goes home, gets her boyfriend and they go back to the restaurant. Boom-boom, one guy is dead and the other guy might as well be. All over two gals who couldn't agree whose job it was.

Wow, we get the minor drug dealers 'settling' territory disputes every couple of years but never the fast food kids shooting it out.

Americans will start shooting at the most ridiculous things. Whose turn it was to take the trash out? Yeah, sounds about right.

There are hundreds of social worker job vacancies because of issues with the image of the profession:

Quote:
The negative perception of social workers needs to change to recruit more into the profession, it has been claimed.

BBC Wales research shows three councils in Wales had social worker vacancy rates of more than 30%.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-63961380

I cannot imagine why.

I mean yes they are chronically underpaid and hopelessly overworked with far more cases than they can possibly manage but why wouldn't you do a job where you are hauled over the coals when you fail to remove a child from a dangerous situation and it goes wrong AND when you remove a child and the local media decides it was unnecessary.

This reminds me late Victorian Premier and proud feminist and socialist Joan Kirner when asked the prevalence of a lot of very marginal cases of social workers taking children from their parents. She cracked a very bad taste but funny joke.

“What’s the difference between your child being attacked by a pack of Rottweilers and being visited by social workers?”

“You have a chance of getting the child off the Rottweilers”

Seriously, it’s a very difficult but necessary job. Not only is the pay not great, but too many here have mere Diploma qualifications. They should have graduate if not post graduate qualifications.

Local boy to participate in the NSW Schools Spectacular.

And doctors at the local hospital have been warned not to take naps during overnight shifts.

I'm thinking of moving somewhere where the pace isn't quite so hectic.

Of course, the biggest problem with local news has been the virtual disappearance of local newspapers, at least in Victoria Australia. Killed off in the end by covid, but that only accelerated their demise. If you read it through (but who did) you would inevitably find a mention of somebody you know.

Where else do I find stories about local fetes, wine tastings, raffles, fox attacks on chickens, flower shows etc etc.

Yes I know the answer to that, but I’m not really motivated to Google “fetes in local area”. I wanted someone else to do the work for me.

Lots of local areas have local community online groups...

(quite similar to this site)

I don't know where you live, but it's worth finding if you have one.

Friends have regaled me with stories from their communities from time to time...

Local council, or your local library could probably tell you if one is running in your area.

Most places have one or more Facebook groups, but there are also local social media apps like Nextdoor that are local community focused. Canberra also has the (afaik) independent webiste https://the-riotact.com/ which is where I get most of my local news.

Speaking of which, the absolutely ridiculous pollen count is making the news right now.

Canberra pollen breaks records as TGA approves first new antihistamine in more than a decade

I discovered last year that adult onset seasonal allergies are totally a thing. Fifty years I haven't had to deal with hay fever, until now. It sucks.

My limit is a hundred shootings a year.

Got it all covered!

I live in Silicon Valley so no chance of me buying a home or wanting to.
I have a search tab open on my browser with "weather" typed in there.
Don't care about road conditions that much. Got map apps for that.

I just turned 55 so I'm old now and I don't care anymore!!!

I don't care what the rest of the city is doing. I don't care if the home team wins or dies in a plane crash (the latter would be national news anyways). Was there a shooting? Great, didn't happen near me and it probably won't. I look up crime stats when I move. If there were shootings I'd hear them myself anyways.

Having a flea market, a bake sale? Good for you I don't care. Nuns killed in a bus accident? Cool! How many?

If it doesn't shoot me, stab me, run me over, flip me the bird, steal my vote or give me a fat sack of cash I don't need to know about it!

The only reason I follow national news is so I can hang out here with you turkeys and a monkey as some sort of twisted self-punishment for crimes I must have committed in a previous life.

What's a flood? Last time I saw one was when I overfilled the reservoir in my grow room back in 2009.

"Flood WTFs a flo...can't even yell at people to get off my lawn, the gawdamm drought took my ******* lawn!!!! Guy's talking 'bout floods...rabble rabble"

Local schmocal! Best thing I could do for myself is throw my internet out the window and watch it crash onto the patio.

"Take that!!!", he screamed. "Oh YAAAAA that's right.....who's laughing now? WHO'S LAUGHING NOOOOWWWWWWWW HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!"

Local news here, the LA cancelled a regular Licencing committee meeting on Monday. It's only news because we are taking the piss out of them because it was cancelled because of "adverse weather conditions", i.e. the inch of snow we had.

Back in the semi-local news is a long term recurring controversy over....the Rutland high school football team's name and mascot. The were for a long time the Rutland Raiders, with a logo of an Indian chief in headdress, etc. And not surprisingly these days, it was decided that this is not a very good idea, and thus has begun a years-long controversy, with Raider recidivists taking over the town boards, and recriminations and so forth. Nobody seems able to come up with a team name that satisfies everyone. They were to be the Ravens for a while, but then they were back to the Raiders, and then Ravens then Raiders, and a recent vote to just drop the whole thing and call them "Rutland" got a majority, but not a two thirds majority, so on it goes. The news report is not specific about the unpleasantness at recent meetings, but makes note of it. Some feather have definitely been ruffled.

We went through that here about ten years ago. Port Townsend High was the Redskins, and their big rivalry was with the Chimacum Cowboys. It's a liberal little town and some people wanted it changed, others did not. Eventually the state high school athletic association banned all such names and they became the Redhawks.
The Redhawks wore red. The Cowboys wore blue. But the two districts have wound up combining their athletic programs due to cost and attendance. The combined team is the East Jefferson Rivals. They wear purple.

Canberra's rugby league team is the Raiders, but we have a faux-Viking as the logo.

Thanks for that. I joined a local community facebook group, and found to my amazement that around half the residents are members (you have to give your address, so maybe some did this falsely, but I can't imagine many). Yes a lot of people I know, but short of news. When you get rid of "lets have a coffee" and "who can fix my door" and "kangaroos eating my grass" (hardly news here) there is not much news at all.

Yeah, unfortunately the faux-viking Raiders have kind of been pre-empted by the pro football team, and this being one of the more rufescent corners of Vermont, I'm afraid if they tried to keep the name and de-nativize it, they'd end up with stars and bars instead. I like the idea of just plain Rutland. They could go on with that theme. "Just plain Rutland. Just live with it." "Rutland. That's it. We're not ****** Brattleboro!" "Rutland. Ya want cheese with that?"

Before it hit the news!

On the walk home tonight as I crossed the highway there was a taxi crashed into the ditch at a tire shop.

The road behind it was littered with bullet casings and cops. The coroner van was already there.

Most times anything like this happens it's drugs and money owed for them.

This crap doesn't even bother me anymore. The drug business here is a self cleaning litter box. They don't want non players involved when possible.

I've been in our local paper 3 times this year, once to do with doing 250 parkruns and twice for my art.

Not going to doxx myself, so no links.

I also had something to do with the stories in two other articles (no, not writing them) but my name wasn't mentioned, that were about tree planting and town decorations.

At least I wasn't in the Court writeups.

If the right to existence is conceded to new-born children, then they have the right; if it is not conceded to them, as was the case among the Spartans and ancient Romans, then they do not have it. For only society can give or concede it to them; they themselves cannot take it, or give it to themselves.

Nobody seems able to come up with a team name that satisfies everyone. The news report is not specific about the unpleasantness at recent meetings, but makes note of it. Some feather have definitely been ruffled.
Compromise and call them the Ravers.

Not such a bad idea. Their mascot could be a phish.

It would be more logical to call them the Rutters.

More local for our resident Monkey than myself, but honestly, nothing much happens in my miserable little burg anyway, and St. Louis provides my local TV news, so here it is...
Some St. Louis Aldermen were dumb enough to get caught on video being handed lumps of cash as bribes, and have now been sentenced for abject stupidity.

I love the first guy's outfit. Let's go appear in front of the judge in a fur-lined jacket and a hat straight out of "The Godfather," that'll make a good impression.

When my stepson was little, he used to like to call local towns by funny names, and his choice for this one was "Rat-land.*" No need to hunt for a mascot there.

*Castleton was Smashleton, and once the whole family got into it it's hard to remember which of us came up with Polluteney for Poultney, and Muddlebury for Middlebury, but I think Brandoon was his. Fur Haven was his and prophetical, as recently the town has twice elected a dog as its mayor.

I like mgidm86's rant, but I take a slightly opposing view anyway. I get the local paper (well, as local as such things can be when you're not local to much of anything). It's mostly puppies and fund drives and high school kids picking trash out of the stream, and it takes about 30 seconds to read it and recycle it. I say **** the world news, it's all dismal and discouraging and frightening. If it's big enough to have to know about, it will get into the paper and send the school play to page 2. Otherwise, if it's important enough I'll probably hear about it first here.

Congress will commit congress, and somewhere bombs will fall, but I'm OK with bluebird sightings and pussycats in funny hats.

What I found funniest was when one of them argued he shouldn't have to return the bribe money.

This fantastic statue is right outside the building where I work.

Popular magpie sculpture officially swoops back into the city

Quote:
The famous magpie sculpture that impressed Canberrans earlier this year has finally returned to its home in Garema Place.

Big Swoop, designed by local artist Yanni Pounartzis, was officially welcomed back on 2 December after undergoing months of repairs. Vandals damaged the sculpture within two weeks of it being unveiled in March earlier this year.

Now in a more centralised position outside Redpath Shoes, the half-tonne, 3.5 metre-long, 2.4 metre-high structure is already wowing Canberrans again.
