By the way, just to clarify, too late for editing, ex Gov. Douglas is either lying or misinformed, or fudging words. Mead did not use the precise word "eugenics" at the time (it was first used in the 1880's but was not common), but he counted all sorts of things including criminality and prostitution and the like as belonging to the class of "defectives," which he claimed was increasing dangerously, and advocated restrictive marriage laws, segregation of defectives, and sterilization. He was quite vociferous about it.

I'm having trouble making sense of that (the Simeon Burke article).

Is this another case of the 'Freemen of the Land/Sovereign Citizen' ******** that seems to be infecting the brains of morons around the world?

I was confused because I misread "religious" as "indigenous"! Appears to be normal right-wing Xian trans-phobia.

Yes, it's hard to make sense of the Burke stuff if you haven't been following it, but I read to the bottom of the second link and they finally reminded us of what it's all about. Burke objected, presumably in a fairly objectionable way, when told that a student was to be addressed by a new set of pronouns.

No, the Burkes are part of the protestant wing of the ultra far-right christian nationalist groupings that infest Irish society (more prominent groups areLolek Ltd t/a the iOnanist Institution or the [strikethrough]Hitler[/strikethrough] Jugend Defence). They are utterly horrified that Ireland left the 6th century CE and are now a modern multicultural, secular and tolerant society.

Think the likes of Pat Robertson (in fact these goms get funding from the same far right billionaires the US christian fascists do).

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the Burkes do go down the FotL route eventually.

Burke objected in the usual boorish fashion, and then proceeded (at a later date) to initiate a physical altercation with the principal at a public event over the matter.

Incidentally, a year prior a similar instruction was given re another student who was transitioning. The first time, not a peep of dissent out of Burke; given his bully boy characteristics, he was probably afraid of getting his block knocked off the first time round if he showed his true homophobia.

More "my religious beliefs trump everything else". Followed by a noisy tantrum.

Much of the religious bigotry here is imported, or at least supported by USAian bigot money.

Ah, thanks team.

I shouldn't have stopped at the first article.

The ranting in Court stuff is just a general Karen/Kevin thing then I guess.

If you ever want to see bizarre human behaviour search for 'Karen' and 'Court' in youtube.

The amounts of breathtakingly stupid behaviour is astonishing.

i.e.

Judge: "30 days contempt of Court, if you speak again I'll give you another 30."
Karen: "You have no!"
Judge: "60 days"

Bump.
Enoch Burke loses. No doubt the tantrums will continue.

Also an interesting case regarding pro per defendants. Can a person have legal representation forced upon them?

Saw that about Burke, at this stage he'll have to feck off to America. There are still a couple of related cases ongoing, his sister Ammi has a GSOC complaint against the Gardaí who, as oredered by a High Court judge, removed her and another brother from court after serious and illegal disruption of proceedings. She's also complaining that a number of judges are unfit for office, simply because they don't agree with her insane reading of the law. The family are millimetres away from being FotLs.

Meanwhile in my town's community groups it's the usual complaints about drivers, posts about lost dogs, and koala sightings.

Same here but substitute "coyote" for "koala".

One can but hope.
Though I don't think Simeon would be joining him....

Indeed. She and Simeon are effectively unemployable in the legal professions also.

I saw an otter yesterday.... But it's mainly foxes. Though we have a squirrel visit the garden last week. The heron hasn't returned alas.

Given what came out during the Workplace Relations Commission case, I would say that Ammi originally had a pretty good case for unfair or constructive dismissal. But she couldn't keep control of her own actions, and more importantly, couldn't resist bringing her mother in to cast all sorts of aspersions and make the hearing a farce.

She's her own worst enemy.

From where I sit I have a nice view out of the French Doors into the garden, taking in the bird table. It's frequented mostly by pigeons, one at a time, but lately there have been 2 or 3 at a time using it as a squabbling ground. They get pretty nasty with each other.

Otherwise, not much happening around here.

In deeper news, my wife reported yesterday that she saw some squirrels being attached by some crows. Nature is getting nastier.

I can't remember if I posted about it at the time, but just after Christmas in 2021 there was an almighty explosion at a kebab shop near me, which rattled my windows and damaged a bunch of nearby shops.

Well, Kingsley's is finally open again.

Kingsley's is a local fried chicken franchise that has become a bit of an icon since it opened in the... actually, I don't know when the first place opened. They advertise with the slogan "Unbelievable chicken, awesome chips". Personally I like their Southern Fry Breast Fillet Burger (yes, burger) with coleslaw.

I saw a couple of wattle-birds harass a rat out of a tree here...

... when it hit the ground, it only made it a couple of metres, before my two chickens had killed it.

Red of beak and claw.

Big news today other than the governor predictably vetoing the budget was that a hungry bear broke into a Connecticut bakery and gorged on cupcakes. Neither too cold nor too hot they were apparently just right, and he ate 60 of them.

Our local news made the international news: https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...swatch-watches

Police act to stop locals being infected by THE GAY!

Looks like Swatch turning it to their advantage, as they’ve said they’ll just restock, effectively daring more raids. Makes them look better allies.

If the right to existence is conceded to new-born children, then they have the right; if it is not conceded to them, as was the case among the Spartans and ancient Romans, then they do not have it. For only society can give or concede it to them; they themselves cannot take it, or give it to themselves.

With the ‘birds attaching squirrels’ in what I could only assume was some sort of horrific remake - rodent centipede, perhaps - hills killing rats seemed prosaic.

Well, it was once said... "the hills are alive".

I'll get my coat.

Census data has been released, https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2...n-latest-data/

Catholicism is down, especially in Dublin, Islam, Orthodox and Hinduism are up. Nearly as many Sikhs as Jews, more Satanists than Scientologists, Quakers and Hare Krishnas. But more Jedi Knights than the last four combined.
'No Religion' is up 67%.

Not sure what I expected but I was surprised to see No Religion at only 14%.

You have to also count the Jedi in that, because no census in the world recognises it as a valid religion. Everyone who marks the census "Jedi" will be marked down as "no religion".

No.
Not in Ireland anyway, and not in the UK either I believe, they are counted as a separate religion just like any other group with thirty or more adherents. State agencies have no role in determining what is a "real" religion.

"Jedi" as a religion is absolute nonsense. The Sith have a much more practical philosophy. Peace is a lie, there is only passion! Tell me that isn't both a kickass theological tenet and the tagline for a sultry primetime soap opera!
