Representative Duncan Hunter indicted for stealing $250k from campaign
Today's indictments name Duncan Hunter, a congressman from California, and Margaret Hunter, his wife, for fraudulently appropriating more than a quarter million dollars from his political campaign to pay for personal goods and luxuries.

He is in a solid red district, so this won't have an direct impact in November. except for the additional embarrassment it causes.

Whoa! Do I understand this correctly? It seems as if a sure red seat will be lost because of this. Hunter cannot be replaced on the ballot and write-ins are not allowed in the General Election. But I guess the voters in this district could vote for a candidate under indictment.

Why wouldn't they? I'm betting it will be close.
The current GOP line there is that this is a witch hunt. The right-leaning news I've been scanning is spinning a story that the prosecutors are Deep State, big babies still upset about Clinton losing and looking to avenge her incompetence by smearing an honest Republican candidate for minor unintentional accounting oversights. |

So Trump's first supporter on Capitol Hill has been indicted for insider trading, now his second for misuse of campaign funds. We know the RNC server was hacked along with the DNC's, but none of the dirt on Republicans was ever released.
Maybe it was used for blackmail purposes instead? |

Duncan Hunter, Sr. is claiming this is a political "late hit" on his son:

He spent $1,500 on Steam games, according to the indictment. $1,500. On Steam.

To me, what makes it bizarre is how penny ante it is. Many of the Steam charges were under $20. I guess if you're already breaking the law you might as well go all the way, but it really shows how little anyone cared about even a pretense of propriety.

Even games with mild nudity need to be censored before going on Steam so I doubt there would be anything particularly embarrassing. My guess is his account doesn't look too different than a typical gamer with money to spend and prone to impulse buys when things go on sale.

From the list of charges found here, based on the amounts and the frequency, it looks like most of the charges are from someone who was playing a game with in-game purchases - could be anything.

You have to think that of course, the Russians would hack Trump and RNC servers, too, and that they'd find stuff a lot juicier than the Hillary and DNC email pseudo-scandals. There's still an unsolved mystery that Rachel Maddow mentioned again last night about the Trump server that was communicating with an Alpha Bank computer in Russia. I still wonder if maybe the Russians had inserted a virus. |

The request to force two prosecutors to recuse themselves goes back to July, so they've been baking this story for weeks.
Their argument is that it's the prosecutors who are opposing the rule of law (by using it to crush their political enemies with ginned up charges). |

What depressed me a bit was seeing the utter consumption involved. I mean, versus capital investment. If I was embezzling, I can't imagine spending it on consumables, y'know? Probably going to prison for stuffed duck decorations.
It's like Brewster's Millions, nothing to show for all that embezzlement. |

The article I read said they were very bad with money. Maxed out credit cards, $40k in overdraft fees, deeply in debt, etc.
If I were to embezzle I'd steal the money, invest it, then return the original amount before anybody noticed it was gone. But then I'm not bad at money. |
