Conservative outlet Newsmax dropped from DirecTV's channel lineup despite GOP pleas

Gee, that's too bad!

Conservative outlet Newsmax dropped from DirecTV's channel lineup despite GOP pleas

Quote:
DirecTV dropped conservative news outlet Newsmax from its channel lineup Wednesday despite pleas from House Republicans who said the action would affect their ability to reach constituents.

The television provider said the decision came down to Newsmax asking for rate increases, which "would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base," the Daily Beast's Justin Baragona reported.

Baragona shared that the message on the DirecTV channel Newsmax occupied just yesterday read, "DIRECTV STREAM customers can continue to watch Newsmax programming for free by downloading the app via your device's app store," with a link included to access more information.

Freshman Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) said this week that the TV provider's inability to come to an agreement with Newsmax over cable fees signaled "a political decision to censor conservative media, which is a red flag for the First Amendment."
Bovine feces! Newsmax wanted DirecTV to pay more for their crap and DirecTV said no. Newsmax wouldn't back down so DirecTV said buh-bye.

Newsmax, of course, can be viewed free in many other ways, but the people who watch it on DirecTV are probably too stupid to know how:

Quote:
"We deliver Newsmax to our national base of satellite and IPTV customers today at no cost to the programmer or our customers, ultimately offering Newsmax the ability to generate considerable advertising revenue at no cost," a DirecTV spokesperson said in a statement. The same programming offered by Newsmax today is already available at no charge to 100% of U.S. households including our customers via NewsmaxTV.com, YouTube.com and on multiple streaming platforms like Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Google Play.”

"Major telecommunications provider does the absolute bare minimum to not let its platform be a source of provable disinformation and hate."

Now let's watch a dozen trolls try to spin THAT into an argument about free speech and censorship.

Another take on it:

Why Newsmax Was Dropped by DirecTV

Quote:
DirecTV said it would have liked to continue offering the channel, but that Newsmax demanded a fee—as other major news channels do—to supplement advertising revenue. The channel and a raft of GOP congressmen have claimed the channel was "de-platformed" for being a conservative outlet.

"On multiple occasions, we made it clear to Newsmax that we wanted to continue to offer the network," a DirecTV spokesperson said in a statement to news outlets. "But ultimately, Newsmax's demands for rate increases would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base."
Quote:
Cable companies are generally required to pay a carriage fee to established networks. While the fee is worked out in individual deals between the company and the network, it is usually dependent on how valuable the network is for attracting subscribers. According to The Daily Beast, under the arrangement between Newsmax and DirecTV, the cable provider did not pay a carriage fee, but Newsmax also did not pay a license fee—which is usually suspended for fledgling networks—to be hosted on cable.
So Newsmax was getting a free ride. What Newsmax wanted was for the Uber driver to pay them.

Of course, Newsmax lied to their viewers about it:

Quote:
However, Newsmax—which has appealed to Trump-supporting conservatives disaffected by coverage from other right-wing networks—has come out fighting: on Tuesday, hours before its feed was cut, it published an article alleging DirecTV had lied about Newsmax asking for a carriage fee while keeping its free streams.
**** you Newsmax!

Too bad, soo sad! Welcome to the Free Market that the Republicans profess to 'love' so very much! DirecTV is a private company and can choose whom they host or don't host, and the semi-Fascists need to get used to it.

Another GOP moron who does not understand the constitution he swore to uphold....
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

DirectTV is not Congress
DirectTV does not make laws
DirectTV is not the Government or a branch of Government

Conservatives understand it just fine, they just don't care.

They are lying when they whine about "censorship" and they know it. And they know we know. And we know they know we know.

As with everything else they do their blatant, not even trying to hide it wrongness carries the obvious subtext of "Now I dare you to do something about it."

Why would you make the rude, sweeping, and erroneous comment that people who watch Newsmax TV on DirectTV are "probably too stupid" to know that they can watch the channel in other ways? I hope you don't actually believe that.

To be fair, I think shemp's comment about Newsmax viewers isn't accurate. He forgot to mention their poor hygiene and proclivity for sexual relations with farm animals.

Technically they weren't paying Newsmax anything. They basically just allowed Newsmax to exist on DirecTV without paying anything, but the reason they got canceled is because they told DirecTV to pay them and DirecTV told them to eat a fat bag of dicks.

It's not like DirecTV is some sort of hero in all of this, or that they even have an issue with right-wing politics. They've already given another right-wing TV channel the same deal Newsmax had, in fact they're going to have the same channel number in the DirecTV menu. If that weren't enough, Bill O'Reilly is the new channels prime time slot. DirecTV is trash, and I'm glad I will never give them another penny as long as I live.
