That is what they learned from Watergate. Not "don't be scumbags" or "choose country over party" or "respect the news media". They learned to double down on hardcore loyalists and play to people's worst traits.
There was a prominent Republican at that time who said that they weren't going to beat the Democrats on facts (I really wish I could find his name again.). They needed to appeal to base emotions. This was the same time they jumped into bed with Jerry Falwell and the superChristians, who were perfectly happy to stay in their own little enclaves until the government started enforcing godless things like "civil rights" and taking a look at their tax exempt status. Which made Republican positions God's positions. If you sided with Democrats, you were siding against God. Which goes a long way to explaining certain features of the modern Republican party. |
