Saturday:
Coronavirus - countries (Worldometers, March 27, 2021)
Deaths per million (Total deaths) New cases Serious/Critical
Sweden: 1,321 (13,402) 6,328* 298 *according to SVT.se No new numbers till Tuesday, March 30.
Denmark: 416 (2,413) 416* 41 *of 314,161 tests (0.36%); Fully vacc. 361,624 (6.20% of pop.), 1st dose: 670,795 (11.49%).
Finland: 147 (817) 791 59
Norway: 120 (656) 462 46
Iceland: 85 (29) 5 1 No new numbers till Monday, March 29.
Iceland has 95 active cases, Faroe Islands 0, New Zealand 75
The Faroe Islands have 0 in quarantine, 0 hospitalized.[/quote]

*The number of daily tests in Denmark has become a little confusing now.
DR.dk says: 416 positives of 115,103 tests; 0,36%
TV2.dk says 416 positives of 314,161 tests; 0,36%
TV2's number includes the so-called quick tests with a higher percentage of false positives.

And today specifically, the number 416 is probably too low because its based on too few tests "due to technical difficulties".

To put the Danish number of daily tests into perspective:
Rekordmånga coronatester i Sverige förra veckan (Omni.se, March 27, 2021)
A record number of corona tests in Sweden last week

The record number is "more than 300.000" in one week with 11 percent positives.

Update from the Scottish Borders. We've had an uptick in infections over the past few days, with 2-4-3-1 cases reported, that is ten cases in four days. Since the dashboard runs three days in arrears (as it tries to tie each positive result to the date of sampling rather than the date of reporting), only today did we find out what's going on.

It appears that a cluster has emerged in Selkirk, a town that has been clear for some weeks. (It's also a long way from where I live, so that's a plus.) It's only showing three cases, but of course that's up to 25th March and it will be interesting to see what tomorrow shows. There are also five other cases for the week, but not more than two in any one district so they won't say where. That's actually a big improvement in general terms.

The fact we only had one more case today suggests they might be getting on top of it, here's hoping. These things happen when you're not completely clear, and it's why I remain cautious although my own local district hasn't shown on the scoreboard for quite a while. Especially since you only find out what's going on three days later.

How big is the population you are talking about?
Scotland doesn't seem to do much testing but has very few ICU patients and few deaths at this point.

About 300K I think. What seems to be happening is that the more rural areas of the country and the small towns are getting on top of the virus but it's proliferating in the central belt which is more densely populated.

That was actually very funny. You have to watch the different parts to get the full flavour of the humour I think.

I've looked at our numbers today and we've had another three cases reported.

The detailed local data as of 26th March now shows, in addition to the cluster in Selkirk, another cluster in Eyemouth, which is about as far as it's possible to get from me and still be in the region (might be as much as 100 miles by road). That's three cases in each town, and another five are reported with no location meaning that there are no more than two cases in any one neighbourhood. So that figure is still good. There are 30 "neighbourhoods" in the region, and we can say that only five to seven of them have had any cases at all in the week ending 26th March.

The thing about Sweden's role in WW2 is very Finnish, I think. Vixen has mentioned it in this thread, too. You don't find that particular grudge in Denmark, but it's possible that Norwegians might have similar sentiments. Notice that the episode about the Swedish monarchy was made before the king of Sweden had criticized the Swedish strategy.

I live in the most densely populated (11,861/km2) municipality of Denmark, Frederiksberg, 8.7 km2 (3.4 sq mi), population 100,000, 114 infections last week. It could be much worse, and it is in some of the less affluent suburbs of Copenhagen.

How Tegnell sold the Swedish strategy to Brazil in the spring of 2020:
Quote:
Tegnell marketing Sweden's approach to Brazil: No one has been denied care, no sick children, no re-infections, better situation than in Copenhagen & NYC, no need for masks or quarantines, no regrets.

Därför har Brasilien drabbats så hårt av coronapandemin - PODD "Presidenten har förnekat allvaret” (Aftonbladet, March 29, 2021)
This is why Brazil has been hit so hard by the corona pandemic - PODD "The president has denied how serious it is"

So it's much like Sweden, isn't it, Aftonbladet?!

Wonderful, wonderful, Copenhagen! I have had tea at Tivoli.

Here on the southern regions of Finland numbers are beginning to fall at alst, but slightly, so might just be random, and also 'iffy' because of Easter coming up and the government bill to restrict movement hasn't gone through yet (it takes time to pass). So now it is down a bit to 253.6/100K, significantly higher than your part of the world. Population density my area apx 100/km ²; concerning to see it spread at all but it has. The government rightly realises that whilst numbers might be relatively small, if they do not act now (UK: take note) then it will get worse, as the B.1.1.7 variant is quite worrying in its infectiousness and virulence.

I checked our region again today. No new cases reported, which suggests they may have got on top of the clusters.

The three-days-in-arrears seven-day data show Selkirk still on three cases and Eyemouth now on five, so we've obviously had two clusters simultaneously (the towns are well away from each other), and a total of 13 cases in the region. So again only five cases outwith the clusters, and at least 23 neighbourhoods with no cases.

I can see why the Danny Kaye song doesn't use the Danish name for Copenhagen, København. The song needs four syllables, not three. But I never understood why they chose the German instead of the English pronunciation of Copenhagen. Ever since the Danny Kaye song , Americans have used the Danny Kaye pronunciation in an attempt to make it sound Danish when it's actually German.

Nowadays, Danes aren't as offended by this as they were in 1953, only eight years after the Nazi occupation ...

Today's Tegnellian lesson:
Quote:
Anders Tegnell från FHM: "Vi ser en alltmer tydlig avplaning av minskningen", säger Anders Tegnell.
Vad betyder detta? Någon?
Anna on Twitter (March 30, 2021)
Anders Tegnell from the Public Health Agency: "We are seeing an increasingly clear leveling off of the reduction," says Anders Tegnell.
What does this mean? Anybody?

I would have liked to see a little more of the context. I assume he can't be talking about the number of new cases since they have been increasing since February. He may be talking about the number of deaths per day. The number is decreasing for octogenarians due to vaccinations but due to the increasing spread of the virus, more younger people are starting to die.
This could be what he's talking about, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, his fans must be so proud of him!

ETA: Yes, he was actually talking about Covid-19 deaths in the unvaccinated segments of the population:
"När det gäller dödstalen ser vi nu tyvärr allt mer en tydlig avplaning av minskningen." (MaskUpSweden on Twitter, March 30, 2021)

Heh, if you don't like København expressed in four syllables, you should see the Finnish name for it. (Five.)

I couldn't believe that this clip was from yesterday morning and not one year old:

So we see, we see what is happening, and there is no other way than to, than to calm down this spread of infection. After all, everybody has to get infected for this herd immunity, but not everybody at once.

When guys like Tegnell and Giesecke propagated herd immunity through infection one year ago, they still claimed that vaccinations against coronavirus would take several years to be developed, but how can you insist on herd immunity through infection at a time when vaccinations are actually being administered to people in Sweden?

That depends on how the syllables are stressed.
Five syllables are possible if the Finnish name for København consists of a trochee (¯ ˘) followed by a dactyl (¯ ˘ ˘) like this: ¯ ˘ ¯ ˘ ˘
Just in case you consider translating the song into Finnish!
(I don't know if Visit Copenhagen will reward you handsomely. )

That works, as in Finnish, the emphasis is always on the first syllable so the last syllable can be elided. (Kööpenhamina = Köö -pen-ha-mi_na; 'p' is pronounced similar to a 'b' so it's quite true to the original). I remember my mother singing it when I was a young kid, as we arrived there from off the ship. You know, it is a great travel idea for a weekend break, just 657km from Stockholm, seven-hour drive after an overnight ferry from Turku. I am not sure the ferry companies are running their normal schedules ATM.

Sweden have put in restrictions until 3 May.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has just suffered her most embarrassing defeat in that the proposed new bill to impose area travel borders has today been rejected. Let's hope the government has made the right decision in shelving the plan. The infection rate today is 249/100K so is falling.

But...Easter is coming. A big time of year for families. But also an infection vector.

Article in Swedish from Finnish YLE:

Quote:
Vad gick fel i Sverige? Agnes Wold, Björn Olsen och Emma Frans om det svenska coronaåret som gått (YLE.fi, March 27, 2021)
There are also differences between Sweden and the other Nordic countries, which may cause differences in the spread of the infection. Certain differences in the state administration, but also a larger capital with an "insanely globalized upper middle class", says Wold, and more international travel and contacts.
What went wrong in Sweden? Agnes Wold, Björn Olsen and Emma Frans about the previous corona year in Sweden

We are so happy in the rest of Scandinavia that we don't have globalized upper middle-classes in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Reykjavik. In Copenhagen, for instance, we never go abroad. When we have finished our daily toil, tilling the fields or fishing, we spend the evenings milking the cows or mending the nets. We have no time for all those newfangled international contacts and travelling that we hear Swedish tourists talk about in Tivoli.
Otherwise, we might also have had to contend with the virus that we have heard so much about on Swedish radio, and we would never have been able to cope. It would have required the scientists and hi-tech that are a given in Sweden and that we look forward to getting in a century or two when we catch up with our exceptional, superior neighbors, the Swedes!

Haha. Many a true word said in jest. Sanna Marin PM of Finland wanted to bring in a bill which restricted internal movement but yet...allowed people to still go to their summer cottages. I was quite looking forward to having that exemption.

I don't think going to your summer cottage contributes much to spreading the virus. It usually makes people spend more time outdoors, so if they don't invite or meet with a lot of friends or family and if they don't spend too much time on public transport, they should be safe.

The virus tends to spread more in the less affluent segments of the population who don't own summer cottages they can escape to. If they stay away from bars and restaurants, I am not particularly worried about the many Danes in the Copenhagen area who can now visit their cottages in Sweden for the Easter holidays.

No, I didn't see the tweet, but I read that new Covid-19 patients are now being taken to hospitals in other regions. I hope it works out for them, but I hope even more that they do something about it other than Tegnell's Let's-wait-and-see approach if it doesn't work out somehow.

The percentage, 46, has almost doubled in six months. 35 percent still think that it was handled well.
