Flat Earth and the rise of science denial in America

Here's a short opinion piece on the subject of science denial focusing primarily on Flat Earther(ism).
Quote:
Every day in the media we see once-unthinkable science headlines. More than seven hundred cases of measles across 22 states in the U.S., largely due to vaccine deniers. Climate change legislation stalled in the U.S. Senate—due mainly to partisan politicians who routinely confuse climate and weather—even as scientists tell us that we have only until 2030 to cut worldwide carbon emissions by half, then drop them to zero by 2050. And, in one of the most incredible developments of my lifetime, the Flat Earth movement is on the rise.

Some of the climate denial propaganda is spread by the oil and coal industries, to protect their profits. Large companies have always used such tactics.

Otherwise, science denial is quite ridiculous since our society functions thanks to science. These people are using computers and the internet to deny science.....

When Flat Eartherism is essentially adopted as official policy by a major political party, and promoted by the President, I'll get worried about it. Until then, climate change and creationism are a far greater concern.

Here's the problem:
Quote:
Most Flat Earthers describe their conversion as a quasi-religious experience
But at the end of it, he says:
Quote:
I therefore think that the best way to defend science is to go out and have more conversations with science deniers.
Sorry, it's been said before, but it bears repeating here: You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. It's not much different from someone who converted to a religion or joined a cult. (Hopefully not as dangerous as a cult.) It's like trying to convince a devout Christian that Jesus's miracles couldn't have happened because they are scientifically impossible. That's why they're called "miracles"!

It is a kind of willful ignorance, which is different from simple ignorance. "None is so blind as he who will not see!" (Funny how that quote works just as well for a skeptic as it does for the faithful.)

They'll stick with their religion or "quasi-religion" for as long as it meets their emotional needs. Facts or demonstrations won't change their mind.

Yes, they are called congress or parliaments.

Flat earthers aren't a problem and are composed of 97% trolls.

The rise of pop conspiracism in general is a big problem, imo.
