There is no reason to do that. The UK seems to manage it just fine.

Don't fix what isn't broken.

As an aside, my dad was Cief Engineer on a seismic survey ship in the late 70s. It was working around the Falklands. They are supposedly the ones that found the oil.

I argued that's exactly the kind of cretinous proposal that people like Kirchner hopes to be offered.

A kind of resigned shrugging of the shoulders; a simpering desire to find some "common ground", and maybe a "degree of mutual understanding". Some negotiation and discussion and "forward-thinking agenda".

If there's a squabble, why surely both sides must have a point. Why not just split the difference and make everyone happy?

I cannot see that it will ever be politically possible either for the UK to cede sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, nor for the Argentinians to stop demanding them 'back'. Either we go to war over them again, or we continue with this war of words which occasionally leads to adverts in newspapers. Adverts are cheaper than wars in many ways, so I hope we don't have to go to war again.

The Falkland Islanders will determine what they want in March, and as they are expected to vote to stay British, nothing will change.
Or, in Australia and many Islands cases, at the beach.

Well, not really, but it's a good visual boundary rather than some invisible line in the ocean.

Technically, seismics don't do that.

Now the Argentinian President has asked the new Pope to intercede on behalf of Argentina(he's already on record as saying the Falklands were 'usurped' by Britain).

What makes this truly hypocritical is that as the article points out the two have hardly been friends in the past. If the Pope truly believes that:

Quote:
Argentina was being harmed by demagoguery, totalitarianism, corruption and efforts to secure unlimited power,
How can he support turning the Falkland Islanders over to such a regime?

Sounds like the Roman Catholic Church in the centuries after Pope Gregory VII.
