Not necessary. It just needs a 'King's Request' to change the 24-hour clock into a 26-hour one to fit everybody in. (The queue that is, not the coffin, silly.)

Need the queue for the optics.

One news item that caused me a great deal of merriment was that of Maria Zakhorova (Russian Foreign Secretary) complaining about how hurtful it was that Russia was not invited to the state funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Seriously? She threatened to nuke London and punish Finland and Sweden for joining NATO, and now she wants to sit alongside their leaders. Funny lady. Should be a stand up comedienne.

Just realised my recycling and refuse collection is due on Monday. Will they leave me with a stinking container of food recycling for an extra week out of 'respect' for QEII? And the number of beer cans in the general recycling will be truly embarrasing if there's an extra week's worth the Monday following.

I forgot about that. Quick google for <district name> bin collection and I see ours are being collected one day late, as on any bank holiday weekend.

A new word learnt from all of this: catafalque.

Borrowed from French catafalque, from Italian catafalco, from Vulgar Latin *catafalicum, from Ancient Greek κατά (katá, “down”) + Latin fala (“scaffolding, wooden siege tower”), which is from Etruscan. Also influenced scaffold. wiki

I guess, the sheer height of it prevents grief crazed citizens from throwing themselves on top of the coffin. There was a chap who raced up the catafalque steps yesterday and lifted the standard, and touched the coffin, who was quickly taken down by a team of cops hiding in the wings off camera. The four guardsmen, armed with bayonets and rifles 'keeping vigil' immediately...er, did nothing. So much for sleeping on their watch.

But imagine, lifting up the standard to reveal the motto:

'WILLIAM PURVES FUNERAL DIRECTORS ~ " Rest in the Best"'.

Should it be charged for free advertising across the globe...?

Bank holidays everywhere I've lived - unless it is a strange one like Chrimbo can be sometimes - just moves the collection day on one.

For a wild moment when I started reading this comment I thought you were going to suggest they're going to pick up the queen's body with the regular refuse collection. Which is, of course, terribly disrespectful and shockingly bad taste: she was a monarch, they'd do a special pickup just for her. Like when you're throwing out an old dishwasher and have to call to arrange it.

Maybe they'll pick up your recycling but the people doing it will have a melancholy countenance.

According to NPR, there are social scientists in the UK studying The Queue. I gathered that they have been waiting for such a queue to happen for a long time and are eagerly studying and recording it.

Which I've always found funny. "We're giving you a holiday!" "Yay!" "But, of course, you still have to do all that work later in the week. Better get some rest on the holiday!"

Am I the only one amused that the two royals not allowed to wear uniforms in the procession are the only ones with active service in combat zones?

I believe they'll get an extra day's pay for finishing the weekly cycle on Saturday.

Hard to say. It's been a source of jokes as long as I can remember that we Brits can get annoyed by foreigners who don't know how to queue properly, but we didn't think we were the odd ones out. There may have been a bit of a shift in the last decade or two with realising that some other English-speaking nations (by which obviously one means the US and that's basically it) might barely even use the word queue*. So it might have swung around into thinking maybe we are the odd ones out here and then people embracing that as "our thing".

*I vaguely recall hearing of its being introduced as a term for items in the playlist on iPods or similar tech by a British developer, and his US colleagues thinking it was odd but quaintly cool so going with it.

I was reading that Queue wristbands were being offered for sale on Ebay (some at insane prices), but Ebay has removed the listings

That queue time will kill anybody's smart phone battery thus driving them nuts. You can hope for nice neighbors.

How do they do food and potty? Portable chairs?

It might amuse you but in the UK wearing the Queen's uniform is not a right but a privilege which the Queen could grant or withdraw at her pleasure.

I am sure that the US president has similar powers. You would not want a disgraced general to continue to wear the uniform.

In the UK case the Queen withdrew the privilege because she had decided that each wearer was no longer a 'working royal'.
The reasons why they were no longer to be a working royal was different in each case.

Queue is a mildly rude word in slang French.
I always thought that is the reason why Americans say 'line' because they don't like to say mildly rude words.
Also the reason why Americans say 'roach' and' faucet', to avoid using the mildly rude words we uncouth Brits sometimes use.

Just saw this elderly gent who came in on a mobility scooter. The sheer joy and pride on his face to have made it to the front of the queue is amazing to see. Well done that young man, well done!

I thought it was a spat between the PM and the Governor-General, and that it was the GG who overstepped. I don't really know the details, but just browsing, I don't find anything conclusive about her being involved, and in fact Whitlam himself seems to have dismissed the idea (I could be wrong, of course, and it could be that more recent revelations have shown this to be true).

As for her comments on Scotland or the EU, they are about as bland as humanly possible and ambiguous too, however they were spun.

(Oh wait, looks like neither side found them helpful, if I am reading this correctly... )

And, yes, the the queen, or rather the king, now, is still head of state in Australia and New Zealand; the armed forces swear an oath of allegiance to him. Here it is...

New Zealand one is pretty similar.

It seems pretty clear that while Australia and New Zealand are consitutional monarchies, they will obviously have days devoted to the monarch like this.

If they don't want them, they may as well campaign for a republic. But to be smart, don't base your campaign on slogans like "I'm sick of these holidays costing businesses money and meaning wage earners get higher pay".
And the Police.

(At least here in South Australia, I can't speak for the other States)

The oath includes 'heirs and successors' too.

Fun fact:

The diamond 'pip' that is a symbol of rank for some police officers (and military officers) is a miniature of the 'Order of the Bath' and symbolises loyalty to the Crown.

Quote:
"Stylised versions of this are known as Bath stars and are used as epaulette pips to indicate British Army officer ranks and for police ranks."

It is worth taking notice of the things we are offended by – they tell us a lot about who we are and what we find threatening.
Overwhelmed by coverage of the Queen’s death, my eye was drawn to the hold-outs, those who rebelled against what the London Review of Books podcast last week referred to as the “grief totalitarianism” of mourning Elizabeth II.

You don't know any Americans, do you?

Official confirmation that Australia has become insane. Labor leader of the state of Victoria has just announced that he will build a $1b hospital and name it after Betty.

Give me strength.

Here's something to think about:
Quote:
Everyone had a story about the queen: about times they saw her or met her or received a medal from her or had her as a boss. Surveys show that about a third of Britons met or saw the queen in person during her 70-year reign.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...n-westminster/

That creates a personal connection, at least in the minds of the people who met her. How many Americans have actually met the President?

This is an utterly meaningless statistic.

Saw the Queen in person as she was passing by in a Rolls Royce? This is not a personal connection.

Seems like the questions to ask are whether Victoria really needs a $1b hospital and where's the money coming from? Naming rights don't seem as important.

I "saw" her, she was driven past as I waved a flag for her silver jubilee. Personal connection? My arse.

We're in Italy at the moment, so missing most of the nonsense, but we did salute a corgi as one was walked past the pub last night.

We probably need a hospital (who doesn’t), but naming rights are important. Not only symbolically (and indigenous people will not be delighted about naming a piece of critical infrastructure after a representive of colonisers) but financially. I’d be happy with a Tesla Hospital if Elon but up $100m. The Windsors certainly won’t.
