In the UK case the Queen withdrew the privilege because she had decided that each wearer was no longer a 'working royal'.
The reasons why they were no longer to be a working royal was different in each case.
Thanks for that. I was wrong. Good to learn something new.

Exactly the same for me - lacking the flag - we were traipsed out of school to a local street, waited for about 6 hours (they were late) and a convey of cars sped past at 30mph. If that counts as the “third of Britons” then it really is a close and personal connection…

You might have had a slight chance of her turning up a few decades back if you held off the opening until you had some major horse racing event happening, or if there was a stud farm she wanted to visit. Doubt you’ve got anything to interest the current King - especially if the design of the hospital is modern and functional.

And shows what a farce the whole thing is - apparently it is "tradition" that any country we have diplomatic relations with gets an invite. As if the world isn't a rather different place than it was 70 years ago.

The strange thing is, I was reading that the Queen never attends the funeral of a commoner (apart from family)* but she made an exception for Winston Churchill. Think about it. People are queueing all day (and I say bully for them, I probably would too, were I in London) to pay tribute to someone who would never deign to come to their funeral.

The other irony is that all of the European aristocratic families are represented, as Her Majesty's relatives, but here's the sting in the tail: the German royal family's monarchy came to an end after WWI (Germany no longer has a monarchy) when Wilhelm II (('Kaiser Bill') was unceremoniously deposed, yet his descendant will be there at the Queen's funeral, despite the Germans being the UK's worst enemies in recent history.

As an aside, this will be the first State Funeral since that of Winston Churchill, in 1965. His was at St Paul's and he only had three days lying in state. The *funeral of the Queen Mother and Prince Philip were ceremonial funerals, not state funerals.

The lying in state is again made up, as Victoria said there should not be one, and she did not have one. However Edward VII did and then so did King George VI in 1952 (HMTQ's father).

Same here, in West Bromwich, including their being late and speeding past the crowds. One of the head-and-shoulders in the very big cars that zoomed down the street was Her Majesty, so I probably did see her, but I couldn't identify her at the time.

Not sure if the BBC set it up that way, or it's just the software that streams it, but I was a bit surprised to see that the volume goes all the way up to 11. That's the max number, no further levels on the right.

I'm not a monarchist, quite the reverse, but she took the job seriously and did it well, for the most part. I was born a couple of months after her coronation, so she's been a constant presence in my life for all its 69 years.

Of course. I suppose it is down to the Availability Heuristic.

A good example, people used to talk about how The Great Escape was always on at Christmas time.

Yet...

The Great Escape, another apparently perennial Christmas film, has been on just twice during the festive season between 1964 and 2009, most recently in 1987.

Germany didn't get rid only of monarchy, but of nobility in general after WW1: Article 109 of the 1919 Weimar Constitution stipulated that there no longer shall be public-law advantages or disadvantages based on (family) heritage; that nobility titles henceforth shall be merely parts of family names, and shall no longer be newly awarded. The fathers of this constitution stopped short however of the proposed (by socialists and social democrats) wording that "nobility in Germany is abolished".
The state of Prussia in 1920 then decided that, in public communication, members of "noble" families shall not be addressed in any way different from commonners, i.e. not by declination of their former titles nor by additions like "the honorary". The Federal Republic of Germany continues that practice to this day.
So German relatives of the British royals are present not as members of "nobility" but as commoners who are privately family with Ella.

Always been that way. iPlayer volume goes up to 11. Background rumor is that someone put it in as a joke, and management thought it was funny, so left it. But nobody really knows for sure.

I’m watching for two reasons. I was a choir boy and I love listening to good choirs. And the Brits do pomp and ceremony very well.

But tell me, who is the geezer sitting next to Anne? My wife insists it’s her husband, but surely he is decades younger.

Look at the tiny crowd gathered to watch the funeral on a large screen rigged up at Holyrood in Scotland;

https://twitter.com/AamerAnwar/statu...09698503876608

An Australian in the tiny crowd seems to forget she is not in England. I think this shows how disinterested in the Monarchy the Scots are.

Celtic played St Mirren yesterday. It was well known that Celtic fans would not respect a minute's silence, so they decided to have a minute's applause. The Celtic fans reacted by preparing and unfurling a banner that said "If you hate the royal family clap your hands".

My instinctive reaction, given lots of experience with dodgy data, is;
1. What channels were covered?
2. What was the extent of the 'holiday season'?

Radio 3 seems reasonable, although the music isn't exactly cheerful and the continuity announcer's voice is a bit hushed.

Oh heck, the piece about to come on is a Nunc Dimittis. Are we going to get funeral music of all sorts all day? I mean they play this stuff anyway, frequently. A lot of good music was written for sombre religious occasions, but an entire day?

I’ve had it on the background, always interesting to watch these “historic” events.

Like to see some evidence that this is making a profit for us.

I turned off Classic FM in my car yesterday as every single piece they had to drag in a royal reference. The last straw was "the rhythm make me think of the sport of kings, of which her late majesty was a great fan". A stretch too far. I listen to it to relax, not get irritated - that's other drivers jobs.

The roads around here were very quiet car-wise but there were a lot of cyclists taking advantage of those quiet roads.

... Radio 3 with a special sequence of music for this day of contemplation...

Time to go fetch a stack of CDs.

They've just started Dowland's Lachrimae, which again is a piece of music I like, but gimme a break here.
