I have definitely started to suffer auditory hallucinations: I swear I just heard Evan Davies on PM say that Gavin Williamson is to get a knighthood...

Off to the GP tomorrow and seek a referral to the local Early Intervention in Psychosis team.

ETA I've got visuals too: I've just read the same thing on The Guardian.

Man, I'm not well...

The wife has long been convinced his career is built on the dirt he collected as chief whip. It is hard to think of any other explaination.

This is laughable. The EU is seizing assets and we can’t ‘build a case’

To add to the ridiculous 'the asylum seekers might be Russian spies in disguise' argument and the 'just because they are Russian we must not be racist towards the oligarchs who donated millions', a new argument was put forth today by Dominic Cummings. He claims that this is what happens when you support the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights): it means one has to uphold the human right of Tory Russian oligarchs to have up to eighteen months to deal with their British assets. Dom did try to tell us all about the perils of human rights.

I almost forgot: Ludicrous Excuse #101 regarding the UK government's delay in doing anything at all. 'It's not a competition' Damian Hinds, Security (!) Minister.

John Grace of the GUARDIAN as usual sums it up perfectly:

Quote:
We were definitely a global leader in imposing the toughest penalties, which is why it made sense for us to be always a bit behind everyone else.

In any case, it wasn’t a competition, he went on. And if we were to tell everyone what we were going to do before we did it then they would find ways to get round them. The BBC’s Simon Jack couldn’t believe his ears. He was dealing with a halfwit. Er … But you’ve already told everyone what you’re planning to do anyway, so any oligarch who hasn’t been hit with sanctions yet will be using the time to squirrel the money out of the UK. Hinds couldn’t quite cope with the logic and said nothing.

“What about unexplained wealth orders?” said Jack. What about them, Hinds replied defensively. How many had the government put in place in the last year? The minister didn’t have a clue. Jack helped him out by informing him that the answer was a big fat zero. Hinds was triumphant. That proved how well they were working. There was currently no one in the UK with any unexplained wealth.

Indeed: Carrot Flower Queen is/was of the same opinion.

Either that or he got BlowJob a good deal on fireplaces as part of the Downing Street refurb.

Or he threatened BlowJob with his tarantula (it was Williamson who tried to look hard by keeping one on his desk, wasn't it?).

Unless there is a new category of "Services to Incompetence in Government". In which case, Grayling must be miffed.

Investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr, who is being sued for libel by Arron Banks (so she might have an axe to grind) believes the knighthood is for Gavin Williamson's services when he was the Defence Minister:

Quote:
Carole Cadwalladr
@carolecadwalla
·

NEW: Boris Johnson awards Gavin Williamson a knighthood.

Why *now*? In middle of Russian crisis?

He was appointed defence secretary in Nov 2017 at exact moment, FBI revealed its Trump-Russia investigation began in London.

Is this relevant?

Williamson was appointed Sec for Defence on Nov 2 2017. Days after FBI revealed it was investigating suspected Russian assets/agents operating in London. Some of these had met Foreign Office officials. These including Johnson, then Foreign Secretary

I wrote about the Russian connections to Brexit & Conservative party which unleashed a world of trouble.

Meanwhile, Isabel Oakeshott had a tip off. A person "high up in govt" with intelligence connections rang Richard Tice who passed it on to her.

This call prompted Isabel Oakeshott to go back into the Banks emails. And make a shock discovery.

This statement has not previously been published.

In it, she says: "I have no doubt that Banks & Wigmore have been acting as agents of influence of the Russian state"

<snip>

On Nov 14, 2017, Theresa May called out Putin in strongest possible terms. A landmark moment. First time, UK govt acknowledged Russia's attack on our democracy.

But what else was happening inside the cabinet?

<snip>

Williamson - it's claimed - tipped off Tice & Oakeshott.

May made her speech.

And Johnson? He said he'd seen "not a sausage"

UK connections to Mueller investigation were buried.

So. Is it curious Johnson gives knighthood to Williamson now? Aren't there bigger things going on in world?

I don't know. But I can't publish in Observer because it involves Banks. News International involved. Indie & Standard owned by son of KGB spy.
Twitter

Cadwalladr seems to be claiming that Williamson is either being paid for his silence or being rewarded for his services in shutting down the Mueller FBI investigation in the UK regarding Russian infiltration of the government.

It is all very strange. New Year is a long way off to announce honours.

There’s an article in the Times that says Abromovich wants victims of both side to share the money from sale of Chelsea!
What are the Government doing, how is he even being allowed to sell Chelsea let alone give half of it back to Russia?

There’s a column in The Times suggesting that Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if the world had paid less attention to Greta Thunberg.

It'sthe latest loony trend among the plastic patriots of the far right. That everything that's wrong is down to "wokery" and not at all due to them having been in charge for 12 years and their shameless taste for easy Russian money.

Net Zero is going to be the new Brexit with the shady groups that pushed Brexit pushing out anti-Net Zero messages while not disclosing who funds them.

Priti Patel tweets
@pritipatel
Today marks four years since Russia inflicted an appalling chemical attack on British soil in the city of Salisbury. It shook our whole country and united our allies in condemnation.

My thoughts remain with the people of Salisbury and of Amesbury, who lost one of their own.
The response of our emergency services, intelligence agencies, armed forces, & law enforcement staff was exemplary.

We will do whatever it takes to keep our country safe.
Today we stand united with the people of Ukraine, just as they stood with us then

(Just as long as we don't have to give the Russians their money back or let any refugees in)

Seems it all still comes back to the EU and Brexit for some of them.

Tom Harwood, Political Correspondent & Presenter at GB News tweeted in a series of tweets:

@tomhfh
This is the phenomenon we saw a lot during Brexit negotiations:
Where commentators would take every word of EU Commission as gospel, while being simultaneously highly suspicious of everything the British government said.

@tomhfh

If a UK minister claims something about our response speed, journalists & commentators rightly interrogate it.

@tomhfh

Yet when an EU politician like Frans Timmermans claim that his government/s moved faster - it’s too often not interrogated and just repeated as if it’s impartial fact.
This crisis shows that in the face of an increasingly uncertain world, Western unity matters more than European unity.

Hardly surprising - the Tories know where this wealth has come from, hard for them to then prosecute folk for it being unexplained!

Seriously with the the golden visas and the like I would not be surprised if a legal argument could be made that you can’t be subject to both.

According to the Mail On Sunday Boris has a "six-point plan" to defeat Putin and this is his "Falklands Moment".
Whatever that is supposed to mean.

Apparently he has turned from a "beleaguered leader into an international statesman" and that this is transforming his leadership.

Wow, Boris has a plan!? Is it something like this:

1. Throw party to celebrate the public's attention being diverted from my partying during lockdown.
2. Do more brilliant impressions of Churchill.
3. Do lots of photos with military people and hardware in the background.
4. Tell the British public about very important meetings I'm having with Biden and EU leaders.
5a. Blame Ras-Putin for all that's wrong with the UK.
5b. Mention the bestest fastest vaccine rollout ever!

Dominic Raab on Sky saying we can't sanction the Russian defence minister because we haven't yet seen the evidence against him.

Phillips - The Russian defence minister has been sanctioned by the EU & US & 11 days after the invasion he's still not sanctioned by the UK?

Raab - This needs to be done on the evidence

Phillips - 11 days... so the EU & US are breaching legal sanction rules?

This is the Russian Defence Minister we are talking about!
Do Lavrov and Putin have assets in the UK? The UK imposed sanctions on them on 25 February. What is the difference with the Russian Defence Minister.
Either Raab does not know what he is talking about or something extremely worrying is going on.

I think one step must involve knighting Putin.

3. Doorstep clap for Ukrainians.
4. Send Liz Truss over permanently.
5. Buy blue/yellow tinted bulbs for cheese & wine party.
6. Clear fridge out.

Nope, either Raab does not know what he is talking about or something extremely worrying is going on and Raab does not know what he is talking about.

False dichotomy!

That's the option I'd go for: Raab never knows what he's talking about.
