They are out filming hospitals now to "prove" that the threat is exaggerated. I've been pretty amused by the number of Trumpers who, having swallowed his initial downplaying of the situation, can't seem to move beyond it.

What do they expect? Pandemonium? People dying of the virus are lying quietly in beds, not moving while medical staff move room to room. There's no torrents of blood or bodies falling out of the windows, but that doesn't mean that this isn't a terrible disaster.
NYC 911 calls have exceeded those from 9/11. |

We're being "dramatic" because we haven't got to the point of "Bring Out Your Dead" scene in Monty Python.
Again more and more the Trump supporters are solidifying around a common theme of "We're being evil but we're still better than you because you are being dramatic." All of these excuses are just minor variations on this theme; we're better than you because we don't even have the standards you are failing to live up to. That's why all of the sins they want us up on the cross for are about that; we're dramatic, we're pretentious, we're need to be taken down a peg, we're not as smart as we think we are, we're hypocrites, etc, etc, etc. It's all really the same thing. "I'm better for having no standards then you are for having standards you don't live up to." And it's psychopathic nonsense. |

I've worked at hospitals. They actually tend to 'bustle', mainly because they do a lot more then tend the critically ill. They provide a lot of services.
I recently had to visit one of my hospitals to do a repair, and this was after the lockdown. Only one entrance was allowed to be used, everyone was screened. No visitors. No electives. No just wandering in. No gift shop. Things inside were calm, but there was a sense of tension in the air. Things are bad within, and the doctors and nurses are doing everything to tend to those who NEED the services. The videos shown of 'dead' hospitals are exactly what one would expect. The right wingers doing this are absolute, raving morons. |

I work in a hospital. It's hay-fever season here and I've had a bit of a sniffle or two. So I've been sent for two COVID tests, a week apart, because some people thought I was a wandering vector of pestilence (thump - bring out your dead!). Both times involved a good rummage around in my sinuses and the back of my palate with what felt like a six-foot wire brush but was really a swab. Two days at home in isolation each time waiting results. Negative times two.
So I'm very glad Mrs pgwenthold was negative, and that she is recovering from the galloping lurgy. May she be well soon. |

My point is that there probably is an incentive towards exaggeration and sensationalizing in the media. I posted an example of a “mistake” in reporting that almost certainly wasn’t a mistake.

One thing I learned from experience on ISF is that any claim starting with "almost certainly" probably isn't "almost certainly".
CBS admitted their mistake and corrected it. Big deal. At least they admitted their mistake. On the other hand, the right-wingers that are filming almost empty parking lots of hospitals and claiming the dire situation in many hospitals is being exaggerated by the media is intentional. If your link was supposed to somehow counteract that, it failed miserably. |

A common theme seems to be claiming criticism of Trump is partisan. It you like Trump you think he's doing great. If you don't like him you think he's doing a bad job.
There's zero acknowledgement that there is any substance to base those differences on either way. |

With 9/11 truthers, the idea wasn't to have a point, the idea was to have a response - any noise would do. Then they could crawl back to their usual habitat with the smug conviction that they were never bested in a debate because they had reply.
Draw your own parallels. |

No you didn't. You are confusing reporting with a sports commentator breaking down the play shown in the video. The video is tangential to the report and was likely added after the report itself is written. This means it likely has no direct connection on the accuracy of the report itself.

Wow it's like we let conspiracy theory argumentative trolling techniques be perfected online because we were all to proud of how well we ignored them or decided "What's the harm? Why do you have to be right about everything? If you don't like it just don't read the threads" and now they are in the real world and we can't stop them.
If only someone had warned us this would happen... |

Interesting article about Tom Cotton, who was trying to sound the alarm early.
I've heard him on the radio a lot before this crisis. On this issue, at least, he seems to have it together. He doesn't praise Trump, although he isn't terribly harsh, either. https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/...avirus-coming/ Was he actually the only senator raising the alarm that early? That's kind of sad, if true. |

Never heard of the guy, but you're right - he was right on the money with this one. Most of the politicians I'm aware of were doing the opposite (ex. Trump, De Blasio, Pelosi). as a matter of fact, it seems that most people were except for virologists and those who claim that everything is a doomsday scenario. Sam Harris is another I know of who recognized the seriousness of the situation earlier than most and tried to spread the word.
I think we also have a smaller set of people who are on the other end of the spectrum. Zero Hedge types, and portions of the media. For example, officials in Santa Clara county, CA predicted 2,000 deaths in the county in 12 weeks as a best case scenario. |

The people they interviewed and quoted in that NYT article seem to be pretty low information voters who don't pay much attention to politics. Some of their quotes:

I think what I'm seeing a lot of right now can be summed up by a headline I read. "Donald Trump working round the clock to keep Americans safe."
Yes. No doubt. That's his job. People are giving him credit for hard work. The question is whether he is being effective, and also did he start too late? |

Now it seems that everyone is conceding that he started too late, even Republicans. But it's the Democrats' fault because of impeachment.
It's a real Col9nel Jessup moment. Trump claims that they have done a great job, but that they were distracted from starting properly because of impeachment. |

Not so fast, Trump puts travel restrictions in place and is called a "xenophobe" and a "racist" by the same folks who now claim he didn't do enough early on. Can anyone honestly wonder why Trump's approval ratings are so high?
There comes a time during National emergencies, like now, when politics needs to be thrown out the window. Which is likely why Trump's approval numbers are rising. Many of those approvals absolutely must be coming from Democrats. This is a good sign for Americans, political affiliation be damned. Chris B. |

Trump has made the claim that people like Schuemer, Polisi, and others called his travel restrictions 'racist', but as Trump is a selfish liar who doesn't respect the American people even a little, it isn't surprising that he is lying. Even many in government who have criticized his response extensively, and they are right to do it, didn't call the travel restrictions 'racist'.
Trump's response is deplorably bad. That people can convince themselves otherwise isn't surprising. People convince themselves ghosts exist and that their favorite stripper loves them. That doesn't make it true, nor does it make it plausible. It, like defending Trump's idiotic response, is still a denial of trivially observable reality. EDIT: But it does show what the Trump-GOP response is; deny trivially observable reality. |

And that's because the "travel restrictions" as he implemented them were racist. He didn't ban all travel from China, he only banned the travel of Chinese people. He explicitly didn't ban Americans from traveling to or from China, and didn't place any other restrictions on them. No health checks, no isolation, not even a warning that they might have a problem. That's a big part of what made it racist. The assumption that only Chinese travelers posed a risk of importing this disease. Another thing that made it racist is that, subsequent to the travel ban, he did literally nothing else to limit the spread of the disease, or prepare the US to handle the disease. So it's clear he didn't really care about the spread of the virus, he just wanted an excuse to ban Chinese travel to the US. Had Trump actually imposed serious travel restrictions, akin to what Singapore did, and then used that time to prepare for the inevitable cases that would arise from other sources, then it wouldn't have been racist. But of course, being that he is who he is, there was never any chance of him doing something that responsible and forward-thinking. |
