Trump's space cadets

Yes, kids! You too can be a space cadet! The US military now have yet another Trumpian silliness to deal with. Not content with wanting a big parade, now he wants to "win the battle for space". Even though space is legally neutral territory. But that may have slipped his smooth, tiny mind.

This has got to be even sillier than Reagan's Star Wars project. Which suggests Donny is announcing it purely as a diversion from the child-separation border farce which is setting like new concrete boots around his tiny feet just now.

Discuss!

Quote:
Donald Trump said on Monday he would direct the Pentagon to create a “space force” as a new branch of the US military to shore up American dominance in space.

Trump claimed that the plan will ensure that America, which plans a return to the moon and a mission to Mars, stays ahead of China and Russia in any new space race. But it is likely to raise fears over the militarisation of space and prompted a slew of Twitter parodies featuring Star Trek and Star Wars.

“Very importantly, I’m hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces,” the president said at the White House.

“That’s a big statement. We are going to have the air force and we are going to have the space force – separate but equal. It is going to be something so important.”

If any Martians try to sneak into the USA with their children, their children will end up in an abandoned Walmart!

The moon is legally neutral territory. Space is not. There are no treaties or international agreements related to orbital weapons, except that weapons of mass destruction may not be based in space. There are plenty of military activities going on already related to space, from satellite surveillance systems to anti-satellite weapons systems.

I wonder if this is a change driven by military need, or by marketing. "Space Force" sounds cool, but the US Air Force Space Command already exists and probably does the same thing.

The US Air Force can't be remotely pleased about this.

The White House made a spiffy video for the Space Force, just like they did for the Summit in Singapore:

The treaty also states that the exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and that space shall be free for exploration and use by all the States.

The treaty explicitly forbids any government to claim a celestial resource such as the Moon or a planet.[7] Article II of the Treaty states that "outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means". However, the State that launches a space object retains jurisdiction and control over that object.[8] The State is also liable for damages caused by their space object.[9]

Doesn't matter. That "space treaty" deal was obviously a bad deal for the USA. Donny is going to negotiate a bigly huge winning deal with the Martians and Venusions and all the other countries that have been screwing the US over for years on this. If only the Democrats will stop obstructing and get with the program! WIN! MAGA!

I think this is a great idea. Every 50’s kid’s notion of high adventure! “Bullard Of The Space Patrol!” “Lucky Starr!”

Brave space-fighter pilots zipping off to do patrols from the orbiting space-station/aircraft carrier....
Sure, the logistics are a bit dicey, but Musk should be able to come up with something....

It sounds all the world like a Saturday morning cartoon from the 70s or 80s that some exec thought would appeal to 12 year old boys.

That's ridiculous, thinking our country would set policy based on childhood cartoons. It's not like our President has the mind of a child!

In other news, the government has announced a new national investigative agency to replace the corrupt FBI: Mystery, Inc.

ETA: When asked about the agencies plans for starting up, the spokesman of the new team replied "Zoinks!"

In the 23rd century he will still be honoured as the visionary founder of the great US Space Farce. His beaming holographic form will deliver rousing speeches to new graduates of the Space Accademy who hang on every word about how he came to be know as the greatest president in history.

Totally unrelated, Space Force will be headquartered in a secret underground mountain base. Member of Space Force will summoned for missions using special signal watches.

He thought up the name all by himself, apparently. Amazing what a two-year-old will come up with when left with a packet of crayons for long enough.

There must be an awful lot of swamp-dwellers rubbing their hands with glee at this one.

It seems like a throwback to the ideas of a military space program, Blue Gemini, MOL, DynaSoar. It has zero practical value in the current environment. Now if he had announced a program to detect and deflect dangerous asteroids that would have made some sense.

That'll be in next week's press release. I have the concept drawing of their proposed system:

He's the Captain of a Group, in the same way that a Wing Commander is the Commander of a Wing, and a Squadron Leader is the Leader of a Squadron, and a Flight Lieutenant is the Lieutenant of a Flight.
