‘Night of terror’: Female inmates raped when male detainees bribed guard, lawsuit says

The lawsuit was filed Friday, July 22, by eight women against Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel and current and former Clark County Jail officers. It’s the second lawsuit filed this summer following the alleged incident, with 20 women filing suit in June, court records show.

The women claim that on Oct. 23, 2021, jail officer David Lowe gave two male detainees keys to the interior of the jail in exchange for $1,000.

That night, the two male detainees and other male inmates went into restricted areas of the jail that housed women, according to the lawsuit.

“Numerous male detainees used the keys obtained from Lowe to enter Pods 4(E) and 4(F), where they raped, assaulted, harassed, threatened and intimidated the plaintiffs in this lawsuit, and other women, for several hours, resulting in significant physical and emotional injuries,” the lawsuit filed in the United States District Court of the Southern District of Indiana says.

The men threatened to further harm the women if they pressed the emergency call button, according to the lawsuit.

The women claim in the lawsuit that no jail officers came to their aid throughout the night, despite the assaults being viewable on surveillance video.

This is one of the most horrifying news stories about prisons I've read.

Lowe in particular, and every single jail official that could see what was happening and did nothing, should be charged as an accessory to every individual assault that occurred.

Brookville, Indiana, police accused of arresting man they did not want running for office

The Brookville Police Department is under scrutiny after allegations surfaced about officers targeting a man and arresting him for rape because they did not want him in an elected position.

Franklin County Prosecutor Chris Huerkamp announced Tuesday he had dismissed the charges, adding he’s disturbed at the arrest. Huerkamp has requested that Indiana State Police investigate.

Court documents state the man wanted to run for Brookville Town Board but was known to police for being anti-law enforcement.

The man is not named in this report because he is not facing any charges.

“Keep in mind,” said Judson McMillin, the man’s attorney, “that the board is the boss of the law enforcement.”

What makes you think that's possible? I might be missing something, but this is a civil suit and the only law enforcement charged was the one bribed. Even the civil suit won't take money from the officials who did wrong.

That's actually, specifically, why it is so difficult not to want violence, in the 'making peaceful revolution impossible makes violent revolution inevitable' kind of way. There is zero recourse anywhere near sufficient to address the injustice done by these officials and staff. The worst that will happen to all but the one who handed over the key is losing a job or an election. The system leaves no possible way to seek justice outside of extra-judicial violence.

Which is a problem all of it's own.

An Alabama town has dissolved its police department after local media publicized a text exchange consisting of a racist joke between two unnamed police officers of the town.

The police chief initially responded to the controversial report by announcing that "appropriate action had been taken", without any elaboration or further comment. However the city council held an emergency meeting in which they effectively fired both the police chief and his assistant, and then disbanded the department entirely, evidently on account of the two removed individuals being the entire leadership corps of the department and there being an extremely small number of remaining officers - the article suggests perhaps as few as one.

For now, the county sheriff's department has taken over enforcement duties in the town. The sheriff released his own statement condemning the racist texts.

And after blaming both parents for “negligence” and “culpable conduct” for taking their daughter for a walk on the sidewalk along Vanderbilt and Gates avenue in the gloaming of Sept. 11, 2021, the city twists the shiv a bit deeper by claiming that the parents should have known how dangerous it is to walk along a New York City street — a legal argument that at once seeks to hold the city blameless while also admitting that it is failing to keep the streets safe.

“Any and all risks, hazards, defects, and dangers … were of an open, obvious, apparent, and inherent nature, and were known or should have been known to plaintiff[s],” the city’s court papers claim

The city’s Law Department also claim that the NYPD had to chase down Mott due to “...the risks to the public, outweighed the danger to the community if the suspect was not immediately apprehended.” Why that driver, who had 160 traffic violations and $14,000 in fines, didn’t present enough of a danger to the community for the city to at least revoke his license wasn’t mentioned in the city’s response. In the city’s Law Department’s opinion, New York’s Department of Transportation and Police Department are completely blameless and immune from the lawsuit. Mott was charged with manslaughter. His next court appearance is set for August 24.

I can kind of see the argument that the city can't be held responsible. Accidents will always be able to occur however safe you have tried to build the road.

But there's a long way from that argument to "parents showed negligence and is culpable for walking on the sidewalk with their child". That is victim blaming of the highest order. Ms Gross should be ashamed of herself. **** that noise.

Also initiating a chase in a heavily populated area over a red light infraction?? US police is really something else.

It's the knock-on effect from the so called "Tort Reform" movement. We were bombarded with propaganda about the evil of frivolous lawsuits and nary a word about the frivolous defense of a lawsuit. Which from the perspective of everyone not an insurance company or large corporation is the far worse problem.

This is that sort of thing. The officer was reckless and probably in violation of policy by chasing someone over a traffic violation. Admit civil liability and maybe have a trial over damages unless there is a settlement.

However the city council held an emergency meeting in which they effectively fired both the police chief and his assistant, and then disbanded the department entirely, evidently on account of the two removed individuals being the entire leadership corps of the department and there being an extremely small number of remaining officers - the article suggests perhaps as few as one. Because really, they should have known how dangerous it is to exist on a New York sidewalk. Julien Mong and Marion Guillemin lost their infant daughter Apolline Mong-Guillemin on September 11, 2021. That evening, the family was out for a stroll when Tyrik Mott drove the wrong way down a one-way street while fleeing police. Mott hit another driver, forcing that car on to the curb and into the small family. The second car hit Mong, Guillemin and their daughter, launching the 3-month-old from her stroller. Mott had a long history of traffic violations, according to AMNY Quote: Mong-Guillemin was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. Guillemin was also severely injured in the crash. Mong and Guillemin filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city last month. Accidents will always be able to occur however safe you have tried to build the road. But there's a long way from that argument to "parents showed negligence and is culpable for walking on the sidewalk with their child". That is victim blaming of the highest order. Ms Gross should be ashamed of herself. **** that noise. Also initiating a chase in a heavily populated area over a red light infraction?? US police is really something else.
