Another attack in London?

I'm hearing reports of "an incident" in Oxford Circus. Panic in the streets, people running for their lives, etc. Reports of gunshots, a lorry hitting pedestrians, explosions, you name it.

For the avoidance of doubt, Oxford Circus is not in Oxford (it's in the very centre of London) and there is no circus nearby. Just a lot of shops.

And it all seems to be over almost as quickly as it began.

Metropolitan Police say: "To date police have not located any trace of any suspects, evidence of shots fired or casualties."

The police are now saying there is no evidence that any shots were fired or any crashes. One person has minor injuries and the tube stations have reopened; it seems that this was either a small incident or nothing at all, but shoppers and travellers panicked.

The Metropolitan Police says in a statement:

"To date police have not located any trace of any suspects, evidence of shots fired or casualties.

"Officers continue to work with colleagues from British Transport Police in the area of Oxford Circus.

"Updates will be provided as soon as we have them.

"If you are in building stay in a building, if you are on the street in Oxford Street leave the area.

"Officers are continuing to search the area."

Police say they are responding to an ongoing incident following a number of reports of shots being fired on Oxford Street in central London.

The Met police said, however, they could find no evidence of shots being fired, there were no reports of serious casualties and they had not located any suspects.

It seems unlike a terrorist incident as reports are saying no casualties or injuries found yet. There may not have been a gunman at all.

I'm guessing the amount of time between the panic and the resolution wasn't quite long enough for Trump to tweet something offensive about Sadiq Khan.

Mass hysteria triggered by a loud noise ?

Armed police have been stood down and two London Underground stations have reopened following reports of gunshots being fired at Oxford Circus.

Police say they received reports of shots being fired in a number of locations near Oxford Street, saying there was "significant" panic.

Officers said they had not located "any trace" of any suspects, evidence of shots fired or causalities.

Rumours of gunshots in London, and all the newspapers instantly brand it terror.

If it was in the US, it would just be a normal afternoon.

Sounds about right. People can be herd animals if just a few start screaming & running.

My friends & I accidentally caused a much smaller panic years ago when we realized we were going to miss our train, exclaimed "OH ****!" & started running.

It is a circus - from the Latin for 'ring'. Shape of the area around the crossroads at Regent Street and Oxford Street.

Well, the Guardian was famous for typographical errors back in the 'old days'

Private Eye Magazine always refer to it as the Grauniad.

So this and the other misspelling in the thread are in a long standing tradition.

Looks like it started with a large scale brawl, though the conspiracy theorists will doubtless be all over it.

Quote:
Terrified eyewitnesses claim a major emergency service response on London's Oxford Street was sparked by a "full-out fight" on the London Underground.

Nine people were rushed to hospital this afternoon - eight with minor injuries and one with a major leg trauma - after reports of "gunfire" sparked the mass evacuation of three central tube stations.

The Daily Fail reported a lorry crash was involved on the basis of a single tweet that was two weeks old. Story now deleted. But so much for journalistic standards. (Yes I know.)

My entire trip to work today (int the US) was annoying because all they talked about on the radio was the "London Attack". After about five minutes I started thinking there was no attack.

But they played it out - "You can hear what's going on here right now" (holds mic out toward the crowd of nobody). It was so pathetic. I was more interested in the Egypt thing and I was yelling at them to shut up already.

I'm glad the reports were false.

Even that's over-stating it. It seems to be a fight between 2 people. The other injuries were people running away.

1. Someone drops a box in Selfridges (possibly Murs) - or some other sudden noise.

2. Olly Murs ***** his pants and tells 8 million Twitter followers to evacuate because of gunfire

3. 8 million followers read tweet and start a trending hashtag

4. Newspaper sees it, searches twitter for info and reposts a fortnight old tweet, about a truck surrounded by police

5. Panic gets far worse

6. Massive police response, including armed police and helicopters.

7. Busiest shopping street in UK closed off for hours on busiest shopping day of the year.

8. Profit?

For the Daily Mail that sounds like vigorous and exhaustive journalistic research. Must have had an intern in that day usually they just make it up from whole cloth.
