I really know nothing about her politics other than that right wingers are trying to portray her as being dangerously radical (which means nothing, they did that with Obama, too).

What the video tells me is that she's cute, and not a bad dancer. I think I've got a bit of a crush.

Speaking of which, I witnessed a great example of this very thing unfolding in my local politics. Back when Gavin Newsom was running for Mayor of San Francisco, he was running against a candidate that was to his left politically named Matt Gonzales. The left in SF ensured everyone that Newsom was, of course, one step away from Hitler in his racist agenda. Then fast forward until 2018 where Newsom runs against a political opponent to his right and, of course, now that guy is literally Hitler and Newsom is a voice of repressed minorities everywhere.
In comparison I live very nearby in the duodenum of the beast.

Of course I don't see it as you do. First, although there is no doubt that leftwing ideas are stronger in the Bay Area than in say Texas, IMO "The Left" is really a mix of small, self-absorbed, subgroups that spend more time sniping at the ideological impurities of one another than focusing on Republicans. (They don't have to: the Republicans in California, focusing on their own ideological purity, have shot themselves in the head election after election until most recently they lost Orange County!). My point is that "The Left" does not do it in the organized, distributed talking points, allied Fox media cronies, sly, highly funded, constant drumbeat way I see the national Republicans do it. They can't: they are not the coherent structure of the national Republican leadership. As I said, whatever their dream goal they just aren't very good at it.

But undoubtably our ideological differences influence our eyesight and for the sake of argument let's say "The Left' did it (and does it) as you posted. Did them doing it make it right when the Republicans do so? Is this "Your side does it too" ever really a good response when someone points out a moral flaw? At worse one could use it to accuse an opponent of hypocrisy, but I never claimed it was okay when "The Left" did it.

She's a loon. She's an economics major from where? You've gotta be kidding. About time this dummy got her own thread.

If the right is obsessed with her it's because they can't believe a group of voters were stupid enough to elect her. It's a bit scary. All they have to do is quote her to make her look completely nuts.

She's a socialist. That's enough to earn oneself some smearing in the press. But she's not just a socialist. She is, or comes across as being, completely stupid. It's almost beyond belief that anyone would vote for her.

I don't care if she dances on rooftops, sounds fine to me. I just think she's a total idiot based on pretty much everything she says.

What policies of hers do people here think are intelligent and workable? I'd really love to read about it.

mgidm86 when the President of the United States engages in saber-rattling with a hostile foreign nuclear power:
Quote:
An amazing leap from what Trump said (a vague threat) to what people claim he means (thermonuclear war).

We are not going to nuclear war and I will not lose a wink of sleep worrying about it. Cold War - been there done that. Trump and Rocket Man? How cute.

She's a loon.

To recap, when the leader of the free world threatens North Korea, mgidm86 shrugs his shoulders and sleeps like a baby, but when a low-ranking member of Congress espouses a Socialist policy, mgidm86 thinks she's crazy and gets scared.

Reagan would be dangerously radical by their current criteria. It is a "smear" they routinely use against people who by any normal criteria would be considered solidly mainstream.

As to your second point: there are also definite attempts to marginalize her by focusing on trivia relating to her as a young woman (her appearance, dress, dancing, etc.) rather than on her political beliefs, actions, and goals. Fox news has done this repeatedly. So I am a little embarrassed to say that, exactly like you, I developed a bit of a crush on her from the video based on her looking... attractive.. I know it was wrong and I will try to do better in the future.

I don't even consider myself a leftist, leftwing, or a socialist, but those are all things we should aspire to. They've all been done to at least some degree in other, less wealthy countries. To say its actually possible in our lifetimes in this screwed up mess of a republic is doubtful however.

Honestly, I can't imagine anyone not seeing this as being done by the Democrats (or the left in general).

You're right that two wrongs don't make a right, but your post above just seemed hilariously one-sided and a good example of the glass houses scenario. As if Rod Blagojevich made a post on here accusing another politician of corruption.

Those seem like reasonable fields of study for a congressperson.

And yes, I would set the bar the same for a Republican. I'm not one who thinks GWB is an idiot for example.

Graduating cum laude from Boston University in any discipline is certainly indicative of intelligence.

I'm not sure why you think International Relations and Economics are among the ones with a lower bar.

I was not denying it was done by "my side." I acknowledged the same in my posts but did state that IMO it was nowhere at the same organized level as by the Republicans. Oddly you did not provide evidence to the contrary. And I also acknowledged that you and I would undoubtedly disagree as to the extent of who does how much based on our ideologies and I agreed to accept your point of view for purposes of discussion.

That all seems quite reasonable, not hilariously one-sided, to me.

Okay, we agree that the "Yeah, well your mother wears army boots too" argument is just a distraction; we should move on.

Whereas the right-wing "obsession" with Ocasio-Cortez is...where? Certainly not on this forum. I think this is the first thread started about her.

This forum does not represent the entire internet.

And my "obsession" with Trump is pretty much limited to "oh dang, that is one hell of a dumpsterfire".

I was actually smiling in amusement as I read your post thinking, "Can he really not see the irony in this?" Welcome to how Americans have felt since Nov. 2016 for exactly the same reasons, with a couple irrelevant exceptions.

And by the way, Trump has a BS in economics just like AOC. He's bragged about being a "great student" but did not graduate with honors, much less cum laude.

Its not hard to understand why when you look at the photographs of the two sides of the house...

Dems: Fully representative of the diversity of the American Demographic; young, middle-aged and older men and women, Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, Native Americans. Gays, Lesbians & Trans genders.

GOP: Staid old white men with a few middle aged women and some blacks as tokens.

Literal Congressmen mocker her for wearing a suit. That is when they aren't just making up things and claiming she said them. It isn't even the first time they've criticized her in a way that shows horrendous tone-deafness and backfires.

They are supremely out of touch of average American lives and values.
Wait, what? Really?

Well, that was most disappointing scandal video over. I'm sure Trump's, Russian hooker pee video will be way better.

Apparently one of the things DidnDo Nuffing didn't do was to provide for his daughter's college education. I like the racist name and the little nazi twitterbird, though. Let's you know immediately that he's one of the "good people on both sides", right off the bat.

It's not that liberals have become less tolerant. It's that conservatives have become more intolerable.

If she were a Republican I don't think you'd set the bar that low.
Then why does she think the US spent over 21 trillion on the military?

Yes, because supporting a candidate you agree with is just plain demented. Alternately, perhaps the people who voted for her don't agree with all her policy choices/issues but elected her because she'll shake up the system (and with that cute little butt, do an excellent job of it, amiright hurr hurr hurr) and give the political opposition conniption fits. Now where have we heard that particular justification, recently?

I think most of the negativity toward her is due to the stupid things she says, not her dancing on rooftops. Most of what I see reported on her is along the lines of, "Look what stupid thing she said this week!"
On social media (tweeted by bastions of the journalistic profession) they're reporting on her dancing on a rooftop and showing that she's wearing a ... a... a... blazer(OMG@!!11) Who has more readers? The Washington Times orTimmy Twitter?

She's a loon. She's an economics major from where? You've gotta be kidding. About time this dummy got her own thread.
You elected a business major from where? You've gotta be kidding. About time that dummy got his own cell.

If the right is obsessed with her it's because they can't believe a group of voters were stupid enough to elect her. It's a bit scary. All they have to do is quote her to make her look completely nuts.
The right is obsessed with her because she is one of the more prominent ships that the rising tide is bringing out. She's already got almost 2 million followers on Twitter and is going to be a pain in your conservative asses for years to come. She's cute, she's funny, she is progressive.... for a conservative, what's not to hate? This is the long game. Seventeen to twenty non-issues a year blown out of proportion with sufficient huffing and puffing in moral outrage, and they hope to have Hillaried her by 2032.

Quote:
She's a socialist. That's enough to earn oneself some smearing in the press. But she's not just a socialist. She is, or comes across as being, completely stupid. It's almost beyond belief that anyone would vote for her.
Potato potahto... The rest of the (normal) world doesn't quiver under the bed when "Socialist, OMG!" is mentioned. A whole lot of us like socialism. Ask those soybean farmers in Iowa what they think about it! As to completely stupid, may I remind you of the intellectual prowess of the Commander In Chief you so valiantly support every day. I'm gonna hazzard a guess that "smart" doesn't fit into your criteria, no does it mean what others think it does. "Smart" to the paleos means "agrees with me".

Quote:
I don't care if she dances on rooftops, sounds fine to me. I just think she's a total idiot based on pretty much everything she says.
And with your credibility rating over here at Chez Foolmewunz, you thinking she's an idiot is less important than the twenty two baht decrease on passion fruit pulp I just saw at Tesco. I can make a tasty gelato with passion fruit pulp. Your opinions are funny but have not much more value than that.

What policies of hers do people here think are intelligent and workable? I'd really love to read about it.
Pissing off the conservatives.
