Hey, the democrat party is doing their rebuttal from the holodeck of the starship enterprise.

The fake background is swaying back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth.

Terrific speech by our President.

The way he extended an olive branch on issues (family leave, etc) only to be ignored by the sniggering Democrats has got to be an eye opener.

Nancy Pelosi should have worn glasses, perhaps she would not have looked like a jack a ninny shuffling papers like a moron all night.

Before the paper shuffling, she looked as if she was having trouble with her dentures.

Good speech by Trump though - too bad he'll likely be taking to twitter shortly and ******* up any good that came from tonight.

Okay, so I am now watching the recording.

"First lady..."

Standing ovation, and there are some very, very old people who are struggling to get to their feet. Can someone just tell them they have more than enough medals on their chest to avoid having to ever stand for Donny Trump and his immigrant wife. LOL!

Buzz Aldrin, nice one!

Is this star power supposed to attach itself to Trump, or should I just think, "Oh, he's not all bad!"?

On the Brexit thread, people are always down on the British Parliament for the way there is so much "childish" bickering, yelling, guffawing etc... but I much prefer to see people slagging each other off in a democratic body rather than some emperor figure announcing and being applauded. At least when Obama was president there was one guy who yelled out, "You lie!" and everyone clutched their pearls.

Don't know how Trump pronounced it. Didn't listen.
You probably say "puma" instead of "mountain lion", too. Trump would probably think the critter's a sheep or something.

In other news, US politicians chanting the name of their country as if they were at a sporting event because the president mentioned that the US has a record high number of women in the government is very weird. Especially given that it's less than 25% and still one of the lowest percentages in the Western world.

Some of the nearly 100 countries with a higher percentage of women in government: Somalia, Iraq, Vietnam, Israel, El Salvador, Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Africa, Mexico, Bolivia, Cuba, Rwanda.

USA! USA! USA! USA!

While she was at this show, I was finding out that her top health policy adviser promised some corporate backers that "Democrats would be allies to the insurance industry in the fight against single-payer health care". I don't care what her clap looked like.

An eye opener that the shoe's on the other foot now? If you really think that he extended an olive branch, you're delusional. The Republicans would never accept compromise anyway.

Public opinion will change to the negative, once Trump starts tweeting again. Last year, the pundits were talking about how Trump pivoted with his SOTU but found out they were wrong when he tweeted his usual hate not even 24 hours later.

Also, most people that attend a Nickleback concert approve of their music.

SOTU audience most partisan since 2001. Doubt they'll change their minds.

I can only find the CNN and CBS stuff on Twitter (from the official CNN and CBS accounts) not the full poll results.

This contextual insert from last year's CNN poll is quite telling:

Quote:
Some important caveats: This survey reflects the views of only those who watched the speech, not of all Americans. The poll was conducted among a group of Americans who said in prior interviews that they planned to watch the speech and were willing to be contacted after its conclusion.
People who choose to watch a political speech tend to be more supportive of the speaker than the general population; this sample was about 7 points more Republican than the entire American population.

I've found some detail on the CNN poll.

Overview: https://edition.cnn.com/2019/02/06/p...oll/index.html
Breakdown: http://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/2019/images/0....sotu.reax.pdf

Notable:
Quote:
the audience had the largest partisan tilt measured in any CNN instant poll following a presidential address to Congress dating back to 2001 -- viewers were roughly 17 points more likely than the general public to identify as Republicans, and were largely fans of the President. In pre-speech surveys, 61% of speech-watchers said they approved of the job he was doing as President, compared with 40% in CNN's latest representative survey of all American adults.

And some more details of the CBS poll: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/state-o...cbs-news-poll/

POLL STUNNER - 70% of respondents to a Fox News poll think people earning over $10 million should pay a marginal tax rate of 70%. ( https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fox...estic-spending ). A bit more important than a few Trump supporters saying they like him in general.

Pelosi's childish antics, including shuffling pages, juvenile clapping and constantly swishing her poor fitting dentures around her maw were a low point for the State of the Union address.

Case in point

Had to go pretty low to find anything to write about, didn't you?

No word on Trump's lies?

I'm glad you say "a" low point, rather than "the" low point, because that was definitely the self-congratulatory "USA! USA" chants for reaching a slightly less high level of inequality than previously, while remaining behind every other first world country and nearly 100 other countries on that metric. Even leaving aside the question of whether a government should actually be chanting at itself like it's a football match, that's still just plain embarrassing.

It would have been refreshing to have the President seize the opportunity to say something of substance. Too high a bar, I guess

I find it amazing and disgusting at how Trump manages to looks more like Nixon all the time.

In the 1974 State of the Union Address made by Nixon he famously said:

"One year of Watergate is enough." It was his way to try to curtail the various investigations which were about to destroy him.

And now, during the 2019 State of the Union Address made by Trump, he said:

"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation." in order to curtail the various investigations which are about to destroy him.

Nixon and Trump have got to be the most self-serving liars that have ever become the president.

*Sighs* Libs... Dems... you're doing it again.

"OH MAN did YOU SEE how PELOSI totes just StRAIGHT OWNED Trump by... sarcastically clapping at him behind his back?" is all over my Facebook feed and a goddamn front page article on CNN.

Please stop creaming yourself as if you've impeached the jackass every time Pelosi holds the door for him but lets it shut at the last minute.

Trump's running the country further and further into the ground and you guys just keep trying to craft a "Lookit us winning" narrative out of meaningless symbolic nothing.
